I feel your pain Adam! My wife was out of town for 5 days and I had to manage the farm on my own and I had extreme anxiety that I was going to forget something. I always try my best, but there's always a nagging feeling that I've forgotten something and I'm hoping to never have a day where I find out there was a loss due to my failing memory. It's a lot to take on and you have all the respect in the world from me for supporting Anne's dreams.

Your tour was amazing -- thank you!!! I love what you said about the hen that only had 1 chick. We had a hen do that but she had other eggs that once the one hatched she abandoned the others. I should have put them in the incubator perhaps they would have hatched more. It is true about not replacing or increasing the population. I say that because I had 3 children I am doing my part to increase God's creation . . . 2 children 'replace' the 2 parents (pair rents) the 3rd child increases the population. If I’m firing on all cylinders It takes 32 mins in the morning for this crew, 30-40mins in the afternoon for the dairy cows with 10 mins travel time, and 25 mins in the evening to put everyone to bed. I usually do a quick lap to check waters and add hay if necessary 1-2 times during the day and I budget 3-4 hrs over the weekend to muck barns, fix fences, and do whatever else needs doing to keep them going, but of course all of that can stretch infinitely depending on how many squirrels are running around in my brain 😂😂

How do you make money off the farm animals? Not looking for personal info, just the concepts you work with?
@cristicion3333Ай бұрын
I was wondering too.
@AnneofAllTradesАй бұрын
Some of them don’t “make” money persay, but the goal is that at the end of the year, the animals are a net positive financially. I cut and sell hay, we sell yogurt, eggs and beef at the farmer’s market, I make and sell compost, and I sell the babies we don’t raise here. There are also a few other fairly creative ways I occasionally monetize the animals, like using them as photo props or using our farm as a shooting location for some of the marketing campaigns I do on behalf of my consulting company (aka my “real” job) We also set aside and donate a portion to the food bank which is an important piece for me personally, since when I first started gardening, most of our food was coming from our local food bank.
@Marilou-g5tАй бұрын
Anne, if you use AI, you can put heifer birth chances up at 90%+ likely, if conception occurs. Tail painting is a great method to determine estrus and when to call the AI technician.
@AnneofAllTradesАй бұрын
While that is true, using heifer semen also reduces the efficacy of AI by up to 60%. Ella is actually the result of heifer guaranteed semen, administered via AI to her mom. I have a video talking about that whole experience and why we don’t use AI anymore in a video called “What They Don’t Tell Us About Dairy Cows.” Another reason I didn’t talk about in that video that is another huge factor is our desire to create generationally genetically adapted stock that is hardier for our unique land and husbandry practices. We use what I call “breed rite” strips as a backup for record keeping purposes, but I don’t have a problem detecting estrus, with as much time as I spend with my animals, it’s pretty easy to tell, there are visible body and behavior changes, unique to each animal that are good indicators of where they are in their cycle.
@Marilou-g5tАй бұрын
@@AnneofAllTrades good that you have the facts and have proceedures figured out for your context.

@@AnneofAllTrades many of those physiological signs are relevant for humans, too. Basal temping can indicate human estrus and, if i recall correctly, after 18 days and no drop in peak temp, pregnancy can be determined by temp. Long time since i read that book.

I’m very happy to report that, exactly 1 year after the injury, I’m almost back to normal- at least a new normal. I’ve lost some permanent feeling and function in my thumb but was very miraculously spared further damage and I’ve regained enough function in both my thumb and forefinger to be able to do all the important things again, some just a little differently than before. I’m thankful for the healing and the forced rest; though it was painful and frustrating at the time, I look back on this season with so much gratitude, the gained perspective and willingness to ask for help when I need it as a result of this whole thing was a very important life lesson. God is good, all the time. He’s sent many angels to help and encourage along the way.

That’s a lot of animals. You probably keep busy all day long then you got a full-time job.
@AnneofAllTradesАй бұрын
It’s definitely a lot, and this way of life isn’t for everyone, but the animals and the routine and reason for daily physical exercise and outside time helps me show up better for the rest of my life too, so I keep choosing it, but I ask myself often whether each endeavor is really serving the whole picture. Whenever the answer to that question is no, I don’t hesitate to make the necessary changes. For example, for a season, I stopped daily milking and massively shrunk the animal count and number of morning chores I had to do. I’m also always looking for ways to automate or eliminate steps, so things have gotten pretty dang efficient over the last few years. If I’m firing on all cylinders It takes 32 mins in the morning for this crew they way things are currently, it takes a little longer when the goats are in milk, but even that goes pretty quick. 30-40mins in the afternoon for the dairy cows (over at the other property) with 10 mins travel time, and 25 mins in the evening to put everyone to bed.
