If Bylsma calls him a master I will take his word over someone commenting on KZbin.

Those are Thomastik Spirocore Mittel strings, you can tell from the red colour of the silked end at the tailpiece, perhaps more gut sounding than most, dependent on the bow and the player as well of course. Though they were developed for Classical Bass and they were the go to string for the Vienna Symphony Bass section, they've become more popular amongst jazz bassists & a few classical bassists doing more solo work like Edicson Ruiz, he says his bass is quite warm sounding so their brighter sound works well for him, he does however use Thomastik Belcanto strings for their warmer sound when playing as part of the Berlin Philharmonic bass section.

In the video it says "Ricercare, Domenico Gabrielli" at 1:00 I think they were composed for cello.

@fynnjamin Fantastic playing. They don't sound like 18th c. gut strings, maybe modern ones with coverings? Great tone, lovely stuff too.

Bravo!!

A very very good bassist, yes. A master? No. Very few people ever deserve the title "Maestro". Edicson is quite accomplished, but he has not yet learned to let the instrument play him instead of him playing the instrument. If he composes, helps to push the instrument beyond where it already has been, and ventures out of classical music with grace and beauty, then, maybe, he'll start to become a master.
