Wow! Thank you for sticking with us all these years. We made our very first web resource in 2003 and our initial Smarthistory recording in 2005-and 1000+ videos since then. It's great to have you along for the ride!

Idk how I missed this one, but it was a treat for me today. The way you guys describe pastoral landscapes sounded glorious. I wasn't expecting to see the artist, but Carracci's self-portrait was a great addition. So was my beloved Caravaggio's cameo - I so miss the Baroque style. Just 532587 more videos on that subject and I'll be satisfied. 🤭 I loved the zoom on chubby bb jzus at the end. His little pose of holding onto mama is precious. 🥰 This definitely is not what I would think of for a religious painting. I enjoyed learning about Carracci's unique take on it.

This is a very likeable and livable painting; relaxing yet powerful, and with masterful technique. Thank you for sharing it.

If I've given a chance to just watch one channel in yt, that would be you. I've been following for a long time, after I've fell in love to major works of western art class in University. Thank you for being persistent and doing the only quality analysis of the art from it's all aspects. Learned so much vision, art and art vocabulary from you. I just can't get enough and just wish you to continue creating awesome content. Might also focus more on teaching the main concepts than analysing singular pieces. Big love from Turkey.

Wonderful video as always. Thanks and much appreciated. One or two things though, and correct me if I’m wrong: the painting shown is to my knowledge not made by Joachim Patinir. Neither wikipedia nor Vergara 2007 have them (see ‘Patinir : essays and critical catalogue’, edited by Alejandro Vergara, Prado). So probably one of the many later Flights after Patinir. For sure the Icarus painting is not by Pieter Bruegel de Oudere. In short: still debate, ongoing research and new insights. It’s even doubtful weither the original was ever made by Bruegel. (see also: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landscape_with_the_Fall_of_Icarus) Regards.

Thank you. We have added a note about the Bruegel. Sigh...I am not quite ready to give it up having loved the Auden poem since college. We already mention that the Patinir is "workshop of" in the end card.

@SmartHistory: I can’t/wouldn’t blame you or something. I know this mainly because I’m fond of late medieval landscape painting like the mentioned painters. And lots of literature is getting outdated rather quickly nowadays (same with works of Jh. Bosch; you know the table with the virtues? or the carrying of the cross with Veronica? well….not by my compatriot Jheronimus). Keep up all the good work! An very fine example of good, passionate education.
