The child-like "This is my room" gets me every time. One of the finest cameos in any movie.
@AMPKlickitat2 жыл бұрын
it is. Here's the funny thing - Walken is a native New Yorker, but with speech patterns that read more rural (His father was a German immigrant, mother Scottish); he's always fascinating to watch, with speech patterns that put you a little ill at ease. They're slow, but not exactly slow in the way of, say, Maine . . you never quite a get a read on him, and in this character he's perfect, he's got the speech rhythms of the Hall family, but there's something "a little different"
@gharqad2 жыл бұрын
@@AMPKlickitat Interesting, I didn't know that. German-Scottish? As someone who spent 4 happy years in Edinburgh and Glasgow, that explains a lot! Thanks.
@AMPKlickitat2 жыл бұрын
@@gharqad Walken has commented on how he got his verbal style: "The neighborhood itself, you didn't hear a lot of English. Lots of Greek, Italian, Polish, German, Yiddish. I think I grew up listening to people who spoke English in a kind of broken way. I think maybe I talked that way." Note that first sentence: "The neighborhood itself, you didn't hear a lot of English." - that's actually a German construction, a "subject -comment" architecture, not so common in English, but normal in German.

Christopher Walken's part is one of the most memorable bit parts in movie history. You can't really call it a cameo though since the description of cameo is _"a small character part in a play or movie, played by a distinguished actor or a celebrity"_ --- he was not that well known at the time of _Annie Hall,_ though the following year's _Deer Hunter_ would definitely put him on the map in a big way.

Alternate idea - (not necessarily better or funnier, just a thought) when in the car, just have their three faces lit up by oncoming cars - maybe 3-4 cars total - show Duane's eyes tracking the headlights of each oncoming car with their faces getting brighter and brighter till the car passes. With the shifting dark to light 3-4'x, both Duane's and Alvy's expressions would get slightly more intense (very suttle) within each dark moment. Also key - no panning shot over to Alvy , and no closeup of anyone either - maybe a slow move-in of the camera for effect, but maintaining the 3 or them the whole time in the shot. Less rain or no rain to so we can see Duane's eyes tracking each set of headlights, and also to simultaneously see the two males faces change. Annie in the middle, oblivious to Duane's suicidal thoughts, her face would not change, maintaining a relaxed detached look with nothing but happy thoughts.
