This video was filmed in the afternoon of October 2023 at the Higashiyama Zoo & Botanical Gardens, Nagoya, Japan. The troop finished their lunch, and now it is time for snacks. It is around 13:00 p.m. They get eggplants, tomatoes, and carrots. Ai is receiving vegetables on the floor while the rest of the troop is at a higher place on a rope. After they finish with the snacks, Annie receives husbandry training from her keepers. She seems to love it. Then, Annie becomes a bit unsettled. The other members of the family are relaxing. But Annie is constantly checking the keeper's area. She starts plucking her hair. Her keepers seem to be doing what they can for her. I hope she continues to receive support from her keepers so her anxiety will be alleviated.

I hope Annie is being monitored for her anxiety habits. Sensitive gorillas seem to exhibit behavior to cope with the stress like biting and plucking nails and hair. Genki was a pretty stressed gorilla to bite off her fingers. And when you are raised in captivity you are subject to so much noise, living in a glass cage, I hope they monitor Annie before she looses a digit or digits like Genki. I feel intervention on Genki was long coming and she might have saved some fingers if they considered her well being a bit earlier. In general in the human realm the world has been slow to acknowledge the sensitivity of humans. When a society comes out of denial, there is choice and options to help both humans and animals. I love these gorillas whatever they are doing, whether they have a bad day or a good day. They do the best under stress situations and out of their normal habitat. my motto just love and support these beautiful gorillas.

アニーちゃんは以前からよく毛を毟っていましたね。💦 ゲンタロウ君は不器用な父ちゃんに小さい時からよく怒られていましたが、その代わりに母ちゃんから溢れるほどの愛情を沢山もらっていました。(もちろん、父ちゃんも不器用なりの愛情はありますが(笑)) アニーちゃんにはいつも守ってくれるパパや同年代の遊び相手キヨマサ君がいますが、アイちゃんは母というより気のいいおばちゃんという感じだし、ネネちゃんとはあの通りですし(笑)、絶対的な愛情に飢えてるのかなと思いました。 いつの日か自分の群れで伴侶や子供たちと愛情溢れる日々を送って欲しいなと思います。

同感です。私も幼少期の愛着問題が尾を引いているかもしれないなと思いました。ゲンタロウは指をくわえる以外は特に目立った常同行動をしていないですよね。アニーは飼育員さんとの交流のあとどことなく未練があるようでした。満たされない気持ちをかきけすように毛を抜いて食べるという行動をしている可能性があるかもしれません。飼育員さんたちはアニーのこれらの行動を把握した上でいろいろケアをしていると思いますが、今後もアニーの心のサポートを手厚くしてあげてほしいなと思います。 Rocket Pochiさん、ゴリラの親子の愛情模様を解説していただきありがとうございました。とても興味深かったです。（特にモモタロウの不器用なりの愛情表現🤭）

Captivity is hard on the gorillas ? I am a big lover of these animals, but the truth is that gorillas in captivity live on average 40% longer than wild gorillas in the lowlands. They have good food that they don’t have to fight or work for. No alpha male brawls. No infant mortality, medical care….. think about it. I have given a lot of thought. In exchange for a longer, less stressful and violent life, thousands of humans stand around and observe them. It seems like a good deal to me. But, you do you.

Like the outdoor habitat of the Shabani troop, or the Djeeco Troop or the Haoko troop. The habitat of the Momotaro troop leaves a lot to be desired. A WHOLE LOT!*

Thank you for watching the video. I often feel sorry for them when they can't get away from the noisy crowd or when they can't decide who to be paired with. If their habitats are free from poachers or human conflicts, and protected from deforestation, life in the wild should be the best for them, even though they can't live as long as in captivity.

Thank you Elizabeth for your comment. I couldn’t see clearly from where I filmed, but it seems Annie was showing her tummy and back. She might have shown her mouth too. On the day I visited the zoo, Annie was totally fine in the morning. But as the day progressed towards evening, she began showing some signs of anxiety. It may not be that serious but she was constantly plucking her fur near the keeper’s area.

Bom dia Claudia! Thank you for sharing your personal story. I hope Annie’s case is not a serious one. Time may solve this as I also had the same issue of plucking hair compulsively when I was in puberty. Iriki is 13 years old. She is still quite young. Fortunately, they are both kept at renowned zoos with strong animal welfare. I hope they continue to support their mental stimulation so one day they can be free from the issue.

Annie's plucked her fur out since she was a youngster..her whole belly area and alongside her face. Monroe did this too with the Winston family. Stress and perhaps just boredom or both.

@TheFlashyWeasel Right. It seems Annie has been plucking her fur since she was 3 yrs old. Monroe's case is very interesting, since Frank didn't have the same issue. Monroe was reared by Kokamo. ドンのあしあと👣さん、コメントありがとうございます🌸 iボッシュさんの過去動画を拝見させてもらうと、アニーは3歳後半くらいから毛が薄くなっている部分が見られ、4歳くらいで頭や腕に毛が明らかにない部分が見られるので、その頃から毛抜きが始まっていると考えられます。コモモが耳に手をやる行動はコロナで休園する前にはなかったのが再園したときから見られるようになったので、環境の変化や騒音、繁殖適齢期などいろいろな要素が関係している可能性がありますが、アニーの場合は思春期とかとは違う背景がありそうです。おっしゃるようにアニーに兄弟が生まれたり、ペットなどがいたら毛抜き行動が減る可能性高いかもしれないですね😀

Thank you, Renee, for your comments. You may already know that Annie was hand-reared. The zoo was successful in reuniting her with the troop, but she didn't have a mother figure in the group. Shabani was and is always there for her whenever she has a conflict with a family member. But a father can't really replace a mother. I hope she will find peace of mind as time goes by.
