Thanks... I just completed my Dragonfish to Electric Eel upgrades on my TrueNAS primary & backup servers & surprisingly, every concern you covered regarding Homelabs was what I was researching before coming across this video.

minio wasn't properly upgraded from k8s to docker - the minio user and group were missing. Thankfully, the app description had them specified. So I have to manually add them with specific user/group IDs and apply ACLs on the appropriate Host Path. The app even auto-started after!

Pushed the update last week. Mostly good, I love the docker backend for containers and the new organization of the dash. Ansible tasks didn't run this week. I cant seem to find what happened to the Rest API

Did my update while watching this video. System active processes, and cpu usage is definitely lower and that's with all containers running after the update where before the update I had a few disabled.

I found rsync was broken on the RC of EE when using it as a target for a Synology Hyper Backup. As a result I rolled my update back. Did you have the same issues, Tom?

cut my systems over yesterday and app migrations worked perfectly. The thing I've noticed the most though is just how quickly shutdowns happen now. Guessing it had to do with how long k8s took to quit nicely?

Hi Tom, I have just setup a test server and found a bit of a bug with Home shares and wondering if you have come across it? I setup a few users locally without setting up AD or LDAP I setup a datastore for the home folders and created a home folder in it when creating the extra users When browsing to the truenas server from each of the users machines it shows the other users home folder when they create / remove files / folders Just wondering if you have come across this

upgraded today to 24.10 and experienced the problem - the same that guys are describing on forum: boot-pool shows 1 disk lost from mirror (GUI message) however zpool is working ok. Unfortunately the only option is to backup config, reinstall from zero and restore config - that is for me very bad approach - I would say: totally not acceptabel in the professional world. But anyway, it works fine - just the error on GUI

Can you please explain deduplication and what the implications are for using it. Thanks!
@LAWRENCESYSTEMS2 ай бұрын
If you have a lot of data that is the same at the block level it can reduce the space required for that data.
@BrentLeVasseur2 ай бұрын
@ Say for example I have a music and video library hosted on my TrueNAS and it’s about to run out of space. Should I turn deduplication on? What bad things could happen from doing that? Maybe you could dedicate an entire video talk on deduplication instead of replying here? Cheers!
@joakimsilverdrake2 ай бұрын
@@BrentLeVasseur No. Music, video and compressed files are bad candidates for deduplication as the blocks are most likely unique.

How do I convert over my TrueCharts images? I wanna move Plex, but I don't know how to transfer all my custom images etc. This is more of a Plex question, but it's still an issue. I wanna transfer everything to a new image on a server running Electric Eel.

I too am considering this..... would also love a "how-to" /overview upgrade video. I have to see about why I can't edit my network settings without loosing connectivity untill it reverts back. I'd like to try and find an alternative to onedrive so I can auto save my mobile devices camera roll, and other files, to my truenas folder (for me and my dad, possibly other family) instead of the limited storage option of "cloud". If it could link to onedrive to help accommodate the 3-2-1 backup rule....that woukd be awesome.

Some docker containers require .env files. How are they going to handle that since you can't exactly browse the file system the same way?

If you need to do more advance Docker setups, TrueNAS might not be the best place for that.

What’s the performance impact of vdev expansion? Will the data be redistributed o the new drive? Or only new data written to the new drive?
What do you use instead of TrueNAS for Docker images etc? What's a good appliance-style OS for it?

Debian. Just not on truenas. They should just remove vm feature as it's a waste of time.

I would like to see you talk about meta dev and what are the better solution to setup and use it. I tested it and the speeds are massive.
@samal31962 ай бұрын
Metadata vdev? Needs to be at least as redundant as the rest of your pool and on fast drives- it's also worth considering instead using an l2arc vdev dedicated to metadata instead. That keeps the plus side of moving your metadata off of your rust, while not killing your pool if the new vdev dies.

Virtualized TrueNas on Proxmos or native TrueNas and using it as a virtualization platform?
@joakimsilverdrake2 ай бұрын
If you necessarily need to do one or the other I would suggest the first option. Virtual TrueNas on Proxmox. I have tried them both and gave up on both. Better option in my mind is a bare metal TrueNas and a separate virtualization host.

@LAWRENCESYSTEMS2 ай бұрын
Not sure, but I will be testing that soon.
@gswhite2 ай бұрын
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Thanks Tom, I took the plunge this morning, and it's been a disaster. None of my apps in Kubernetes were converted, and yes you can create custom docker networks on the command line, but they do not show in the 'Settings' under docker networks. Only the default network shows. So overall not a great deployment, now have to rebuild the complete system with all apps from scratch.
