I am a Protestant. I think the Eastern Orthodox Church is closest to the early church. Protestantism emerged from Roman Catholicism, and I think the problems in both places require a struggle against secularization and the love of power and money. Of course, I don't think that's true for all, but on average.

Not really. Protestantism emerged essentially as national churches against the universalism of Rome. The Orthodox are, likewise, essentially national churches. Ultimately, Catholicism is the true Church BECAUSE of its universalism, but, as in the secular world, when you have people not loyal to the body they supposedly serve in control of that body's levers of power, you've got a very obvious problem.

In a world with diverse beliefs and information, I believe that as Orthodox Christians, we we can coexist and appreciate and respect others’ beliefs, systems, doctrines, and traditions without any pressure to change our own faith in the process. Love is ecumenical, and as Christians, we are called to be accepting of others, recognizing their differences. Mel Gibson is not entirely being honest here. He is a sedevacantist, he doesn't recognize the Pope. The Pope's explanation for accepting the statue was that it did not represent a goddess. It was presented to him as "Our Lady of the Amazon"- Mother Mary. The statue does not look like the Pachamama that is actually worshipped, and the Amazonians do not worship Pachamama anyway. Pachamama is an Andean goddess.

Oh, come on, people. The Amazonians brought a lot of stuff depicting their culture, being this a synod on the Amazon. Some said the Pope should allow married priests, ordination of women and what not. The Pope keeps reaffirming that no women priests, gay marriage, abortion, homosexual s*x is sin... Yet, so many KZbinrs, the Catholic ones being the worst, study ad finitum and in detail everything the Holy father says or doesn't say, no respect at all. There will be judgement on that, you bet. As for Mel, he's a sedevacantist. I wonder how he imagines the Church to "operate" if there's no pope, Jesus promised certain things in that regard. Who does he think he is, and for that matter, others also, that he can pick and choose which Council, which pope he recognises. The arrogance!

...Mel also admits to seeing Chinese medicine practitioner for "energy work" and chakra work... these practices are forbidden by the Church and fall under the devil's work... Just because he makes movies about Jesus does not make him a spokesperson for Christianity and what it teaches. This is another subject that I have to think through. I on my way out of the Church of England and here is why. For years I have warned about the dangers of Islam and now it's all kicking off. The issue I have with the Church of England is the king saying he wanted to be defender of faith. He was given that title about 1000 years ago but suddenly he decides to go off on a tangent. Next we have the issue of the Arch Bishop of Canterbury flying the flag of the islamic Republic of Pakistan above Lambeth House. Add onto that the holding of Iftars in Bath Cathederal. They won't listen. I am done. The Catholic Church makes sense to me, but I am inspired by St Spyridon whose remains I saw in Corfu. So the solution for me is the Melkite Byzantine Catholic Church. I will chose the confirmation name Spyridon.

The two huge differences 1) Orthodox Christians follow the Nicene Creed as was agreed. The Pope of Rome decided after centuries to change what the Holy Trinity is 2) The Orthodox Church follows the original position concerning the role of the Pope. As first among equals but with no authority on dogma, administration of Churches other than what was the case in the early centuries of Christianity. I’m not a theologian but having converted from evangelical ( which arose out of Roman Catholicism so carries its fundamentals) I would actually speak more to the view of salvation. Sure the papal claims and filioque are insurmountable but on a practical plane the west sees salvation transactional and the east as a healing . The west see salvation as an event , the east as an eternal movement- theosis- to become God by grace As St Athanasios states God became man so that man might become God.

none of the doctrines of the Catholic church has changed. Mel Gibson is a Sedevacantist, and this priest would do well to take care he doesn't wrongly slander the pope. If you look at the video footage with this south american statue, no one is worshipping this statue. That being said, i do understand the sentiment- we need to be careful when bringing other tribal people to the faith and how to deal with their prior belief systems.
