Swearing often goes together with anger directed at another person. That can't be good! -- I have a Lutheran friend who never swears. I much admire her for that even if I find it difficult to always follow her good example.

Fr. Angelo is right. Profanity is no laughing matter. I remember one time I was at work and one of the employees had a bad day at work and used Jesus’s name in a bad and disrespectful way. I was deeply upset and offended.

Mhm...I agree, But that trump 2020 hat doesn't sit right with me, If you were a true christian and belived in Christ, you wouldn't support 1) A racist 2) A rapist and 3) A White Supremacist, because you would know jesus loves everybody and we were all made by the hands of God.

My take: "From the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." Is your heart full of these negative and often aggressive concepts? Also, the current favorite word is a degradation of the marriage bed; taking the holy concepts and trampling them underfoot.

I know of an Eastern (Antiochian) Orthodox man on KZbin (Andrew Wilson) who, although he cusses, and drinks, and smokes, is able to reach out to those who see Christians as uptight and legalistic. And likewise, is able to show Christians that doing one or all of these imperfect things isn't necessarily going to make you this impious wretch. Now, he doesn't claim to be an example to follow, or that what he does is endorsed, or anything of this sort. He doesn't promote it, and has spoken to his priest about it. He doesn't do theological debates, but rather he is a Christian who does debates with irreligious people. But, because these people he interacts with will always bring up that he is Christian, and throw out that "Smoking is just as bad as any other degenerate act", he is able to show them, and those watching, the extent of moral relativism in these non-Orthodox (particularly Atheistic) world views. Because, some dude who smokes cigarettes is most certainly *not* going to consider his habit as "just as bad" as someone who abuses a child. Because of this, that smoker, or whoever is watching this, identifies with the Christian concept of what mercy and sin is, rather than a degenerate who thinks morality is subjective to one's own beliefs about what is "wrong". In other words, reprobates who believe anything is "holy" or "good" if they can just silence their own conscience, and that of those who are around them. I know of many who have converted, in part, because of Andrew's example that we as Christians are normal people too, and you don't have to be a stereotype to serve God. Being Saintly is something to work towards, and an ideal to strive for, it's not a moment in time that occurs at baptism (as many Protestants would believe). Andrew is just a blue collar working class factory worker, who is an Orthodox Christian. And he really reaches out to those who would otherwise be deaf, in large part because of his imperfections that those witnessing can relate to. I'm thankful to have found his channel, because I know people in my family who aren't Christians because they don't think they would be welcome because of their same and similar vices.

Hopefully I won't be censored here but as a follow-up to this, maybe you could explain about "using the Lord's name in vain." As a kid, I was always corrected by one of my grandmother's if I said "oh my God," rather than "oh my goodness." But of course, the former expression is now so ubiquitous that using the latter is kind of odd-sounding. And it can express any number of emotions depending on how it's said, from angry to pleasantly surprised or in awe of something. Also, while I can see the point of "damn," especially if you are saying to a PERSON, i.e., "damn YOU," but I question whether "damn it" (or with God in front of it) is necessarily the same thing. I think it depends on context. But sure I think if you can clean all or most of this stuff out of your vocabulary, it's probably a good thing.

Many things are simply in bad taste, sin are not, my Orthodox Christian behavior should not be driven solely by the “gotcha” of sin, we should strive to go further and ask: WWJD? The do it! 🌺☦️🌺
