Eto yung type of Gilas season na acceptable na as in they exceeded everyone's expectations prior to the tournament. I was one of those pessimists who didn't really expect them to bag a win kase I only literally wanted to see Gilas avoid any beatdown most specially against Latvia. I guess remnants eto nung kalimot-limot na era under Chot. To a casual fan's perspective, eto talaga yung pagpupuyatan mo na team eh, na mapapasigaw ka sa kalagitnaan ng hating gabi. I think it is the beauty of supporting a team, dadaan ka talaga sa period of disappointment and at the same time, mapapa upo ka talaga at the edge of your seat. Kahit may kirot yung talo last night, there's more to come pa rin sa ating Gilas Pilipinas.

As long as we maintain Asian dominance, I think we're on the right track. Beating the European and South Americans is considered a level up. The ultimate success for Gilas is to see them beat these countries or give them a run for their money. It woudl've been nice to see the Philipiines qualify for the Olympics, but this tournament is actually a success if you compare to how we were in the Fiba World Cup. It shows we can play with the big boys. I think our core for the next 3 years should revolve around JBL, Kai, Dwight, Perez and Quimbao. Quimbao has some jitters but I see his potential when he played for the Strong Group. Basketball is giving some love back to the Philippines.

TBH coming from a Filiipino fan seeing all the movements over the last 10-15 years who's also an outside perspective because I am here in Australia, I think they did amazing and this chapter was really nice to watch. The loss to Brazil wasn't bad, yes at times it did look bad but there's so many factors that came to these scenarios & yet we wtill came back to a 9 point loss (I think it was). As you said, we looked like we belong. I actually believe that if we had another quarter we could've adjusted more and won that game despite the mismatch in many areas. We need some bigs that can move & can handle the speed and athleticism of taller countries small forwards and power forwards. Gilas is better of (as I know height is not our advantage naturally as a nation) to train up a shorter, stocky, athletic 6'8, 6'7, even 6'6 that can rough up & bully a 6'10 forward than having luck with our usual slow centres (with all due respect to Mr Fajardo I love your game bro your one of my favourite players). Of course the other alternative is naturalised players or imports but we can't always rely that & shouldn't. All I'm saying is 6'8 / 6'7 / 6'6 is becoming a more regular height for Filipinos that can stay athletic. Ramos would've done a better job guarding the Brazilian player Fajardo was guarding as he has a quicker lateral movement & stocky enough. Filipinos are tough, rough and we're built strong so this isn't going to be a problem IMO. That mismatch was tough for Kuya Jun! I absolutely love Tim Cones system of triangle (I have followed Tex Winters (RIP) success from the early NBA days to todays NBA). I think it's underrated to this day. It worked well and it's just new to the Gilas team so more room for growth and progress there to get comfortable with it. We did choke a bit and I think JB was a little tired being harrased the entire game. The man guarding him was bigger, more athletic & they were doing a lot of subs (which is so good vs a team rotation like ours who relies on 5 to 6 players playing a lot of minutes - the coach even pointed this out). Not having Kai in the middle hurt us also, in international level Fajardo really is a power forward height & from time-to-time he can guard bigger guys just not quick small forwards who are tall. Making Jun play heavy minutes in his older age is tough man as experienced as he is. He is playing against some players half of his age. My last point (sorry for the essay by the way) is my only constructive feedback and I am massive fan of Tim Cone, I was expecting more of an adjustment. Their defence was locking us in, even in our triangle offence. I always go back to the Chicago Bulls days when teams did locked down the Bulls. Of course they did have MJ and Pippen and MJ was a much more versatile offensive player than JB, but what Phil did was stretch the floor by aiming for an open pass on the outside areas, rather than trying to always get the ball inside for a low post or cutting lanes. The effect of this is it creates a human fight-or-flight panic on the defence that there is an 'open man', and even if that players is really out of range for a decent shooting percentage, it psychologcially gives the offence less stress/panic because they are able to move around without the constant press of the defence (in this case Brazil). Hand overs as pointless as it is sometimes, creates this same effect, it ain't really going nowhere but it feels good that as offensive side, you are able to move the ball. What also tends to happen is as the defence stretches out, the inside cutting lane becomes wider, the low post area also results less traffic. I believe Fajardo could've taken his man down low as he is a strong-wide-bodied built and experienced player enough but there were too much help defence that made it tough for Jun to execute this. Fajardo did this vs Latvia and Georgia vs more experienced bigger players when given one-on-one opportunties. Back to my point, this also would've created an easier outside-inside effect, then swing it back to the outside cos players like JB and Ramos eats outside shots for breakfast when they have space. We just never got this space much! We were forced to take a lot of tough shots. Our pick and roll game also needed to happen more or improve, again with missing Kai as he is athletic enough to roll off after a pick, we really missed that part of our game. Jun can lock in screens but his roll offs are a little slower than Kai, plus Kai is way taller and it's easier to give him a lob or pass when cutting in. The other adjustment that could've happened more is if the defence is 'lockdown' tight like that, as a coach myself, I would send my fastest guard to penetrate. I'll tell my player to penetrate & if the shot is there but I know enough that the penetration will be stopped more often than none with a a great defence like Brazil so this would only act as a decoy to break their defensive rhythm, and as you can see every time Perez did this, he either got to the basket (sometimes took the shot & made the shot), but it resulted the defence to collapse a little. In situations like this where the opposing coach is strategic, the D is locked down on our main scorers so my point doing this out of character really changes things up & the attention gets taken away from my main guys a lot less cos they will be forced to help at some point. I loved this Gilas results despite the loss, again sorry for the essay! I hope Tim Cone stays for Gilas! No more dribble and drive please with all due respect!
@rogeliozamora92645 ай бұрын
Too bad Gilas didn't employ the services of Rhenz Abando. He could have been perfect for those fast and athletic penetrations that Gilas needed in that game.

Looking forward, I hope the program considers the age factor if Gilas is aiming for the LA Olympics in 2028. They will need a young naturalized player to eventually replace Brownlee. If SBP is serious about Boatwright, they should start his naturalization process now so he can join the pool, familiarize himself with the system and team, and contribute in upcoming tournaments. Additionally, SBP should look for a replacement for Junemar. Natural shooters like Heading and Wright, along with a natural point guard, would also make the Gilas roster more deeper and competitive.

I like the Salamin Salamin bgm 😂 anyways, I believe Gilas is in the right path right now. Magdagdag lang ng pure PG who can control the tempo of the game tsaka isang solid na bigman alongside Kai and Edu eh magiging cohesive ang Gilas. Napansin ko kasi in their game against Brazil na natataranta sila pag nag adjust ang defense which is what Brazil did to Brownlee and Dwight nung dinodouble team na sila. Si CJ Perez parang di na alam gagawin sa court kapag hindi si JB and Dwight ang nagset ng play kasi more on SG kasi si CJ. Hindi siya combo guard eh and it shows na kailangan ng tulong ni Newsome para magset ng play kapag nagadjust na ang defense sa scorers natin. Kailangan na din i-consider na kumuha ng mas batang PG kasi Scottie and Newsome are not getting younger anymore. Might as well ihanda na natin yung ibang batang players na may potential para sa future competitions. Hopefully, Scottie, Edu and Kai were good to go sa November dahil malakas din na team ang New Zealand.

Yung huling pagkatalo is also another learning experience pero to level up, wala na sa kangkongan ang Gilas Pilipinas program unlike nung time ni Coach Chot, unpredictable ang programa ngayon may winning formula na with Coach Tim Cone kaya mas confident ang fans

Huge fan of ctc "batang 90s" alaska and si tim cone lang yun always ko na nilook up. Live and die by triangle offense specially na nag coach ng mga kids the same time nag lalaro naman sa seniors

This iteration of Gilas Pilipinas showed the world that we can compete with the best of the best. The next question now, moving forward, is continuity. Which players will be added to the pool? We have a good mix of young guys who may very well be the core team in Dwight, Kai, and Carl (to some extent AJ, Kevin, Calvin, and Mason). We will be needing length and athleticism in the front line, especially with the age of JMF and Aguilar. Next question is the naturalized player spot. As good as Justin is, he's on the last leg of his career. Moving forward, what position of need will SBP prioritize? Are we gunning for length (Okongwu) or are we going for scoring (Clarkson)? Lastly, is Tim Cone here to stay for the long haul especially with his age and commitments? Not that he needed to prove anything but there's a reason why he's the GOAT and the best man for the job, as of the moment. The future looks bright for the program as long as there is stability within SBP and their stakeholders.

Coach Tim Cone missed to include Abando and Abarrientos in the line-up. When I watched the qualifying game I felt that something was missing and the good reason why they won against Latvia was simply because Latvian players were already exhausted in their prior game with Georgia. Gilas can still improve their game by including some of motivated players like Abando and Abarrientos. Abando, as a forward, can augment in the defense and offense helping JB and others. He has also the confidence and the motivation to play well and stick to the game plan. Abarrientos on the other hand, can be a helping hand to JB. He has good skills in passing and controlling the ball way ahead of the other local players. Players like Tamayo and Oftana must be polished more since their shooting skills are not refined (suntok sa buwan) and these players because they're young they usually don't have the confidence to step-up for the game.

Sobrang taas ng chance nila makapasok sa final if andiyan Edu and Scottie also kung nakasama din yung ibang gilas boys such as Heading.

Chills, man. Bro was so busy with the other channel I didn't something was cooking over here. Great lessons all around, and the brightness of the future is justly highlighted by this video. Maraming salamat Gilas at sir Ize sa "correspondence" this oqt. To add and for future reference na lang din, Marcelinho is pronounced Marceliño.
