Dr. Here, the problem with generics is not safety, rather less effective. By quality of medicine we mean whether a generic drug will have the same amount of effect on the patient as compared to branded drugs which have shown efficacy for several years. Yes there are deals made between docs and companies, but those are the bad apples among the many docs who practice with integrity. Next time if a doc prescribes you a branded drug, you can ask them to give a cheaper branded drug & no doctor will say no to your request. The problem is quality checks are not made on companies manufacturing generic drugs hence we doctors put the patients well being and recovery over the cost of the medicine. A healthy discussion with your doctor is recommended over simply accusing doctors of deals.

Don't say we only export them to Africa..| BTW don't get me wrong, But If you are a Doc with moral values and ethics (Which most don't have and I also don't know anything about you) but still if it is then I must have to congrats you for your service to our nation..🙏🙏 I can only pray to Bhagwan to give him more power to achive success in your life and also help more people 🙏🙏🙏🙏

I bought a three month stock of medicine for my maid's mother who is a heart patient but after careful research and replacing almost the whole prescription with generic medicine. Don't worry I cross referenced it with the doctor and he approved it too. Shockingly the cost tumbled from 9k to less than 3.5k. The difference is almost what I pay my maid monthly.

@@sibratodas9890 You need to check with pharmacies, especially the ones close to government or trust funded hospitals. Also check online for alternate brands of medicines prescribed to you and then check which company manufactures them and what is their current reputation. In my case I said almost because except Metoprolol Succinate and Asprin tablets, ther rest were from private pharmacies so technically they were "branded generic". You can also try to find the PMBI or Jan aushadhi kendra in your area which are usually stocked with generic or branded generic alternative but ensure their expiry dates in small town areas. As another user said, it's too much effort and people usually don't do it for one time illnesses, I worked on it because the medicine needed here is on a regular basis for a lifetime.

I believe there's a significant issue in India regarding this matter. During my internship in the US, I noticed that the majority of prescribed medicines were generic. When you visit a pharmacy to purchase them, they inquire if you prefer generic or branded options. I was also involved with a charitable hospital where all medicines were provided free of cost. This experience was enlightening because I didn't have to memorize various brand names. As for effectiveness, I believe the FDA in the US is doing an excellent job in maintaining quality standards. I wish India had a similar system in place. While there are regulatory bodies in India, sometimes their rules and regulations can be cumbersome and challenging to navigate.

What I have understood after so many discussions with the doctors and even after trying generic is,yes we should go with generic medicines but finding the correct one is the challenge,so the best way is to go for brand generic,it gives the surety of the quality and at the same time cheap as well,so this is kind of a sweet spot.

Last year my mother in law got admitted in a hospital. She was given 2 injection meropenem and fosfomycin daily. According to the hospital policy, all medicine are charged at mrp only. So, both injections were getting charged at mrp only daily cost of which comes to around 9000. One was marked at 3085 and the other one around 6000. It was getting difficult for us to maintain such daily expenses. The doctor in a good will asked us to get discharged and take these injection at home via private nurses. We did so. I went to one of my friends who owns a chemist shop. I was shocked to see that the 3000 priced medicine was provided by him for around 300 and the 6000 one for 900..!!!! and that too of a good reputed company.

Pharmacists usually have huge margins in most of the medicines, that's why you'll see huge discounts on mrp on online pharmacies while offline stores charge exact mrp. There are some good shops in my city which share this margin with customers by offering discounts but most chemist shops don't. There was also a rule that chemists have to sell drugs/medicines either by i) adding only a specific percentage of profit margin on the prices they got the drugs or ii) the mrp of medicine, which ever is lower.

My advice, please go to a local pharmacy that is not affiliated with a hospital or pharmacy company (unless it’s a specific drug, it’s best to go for branded as that has reliability) Local pharmacy don’t spend money on marketing or anything, that’s why they are cheaper.

I'm a doctor from Odisha. We have guidelines to write only Generic Drugs and only which are available at Niramaya (State Govt owned) at State Govt hospitals (Not sure about AIIMS). Which is followed strictly, with periodic inspection. Except in emergency room and ward, where Govt supplied drugs (Injections) are given by nurse. In private a doctor can write non generic drugs. That makes medical students at govt setup follow only generic names, and we are mostly unaware of famous brands. But once I will be an established doctor, with Private practice, I shall write branded drugs (at private setup only, Unless some strict law comes into force). Of course after judging financial status of my patient. Doctors are not God. They have their business. Gods can't be sued, but Doctor can be sued at consumer court. Also you can kill a doctor, unlike a god. I'm glad that the mandated generic drug prescription is on hold, as of now.

Sabse pehli chiz ki doctors branded nhi monopoly medicine likhte hain, monopoly medicine branded ke comparison me 10x tak mehnge hote h, aur kharid rate branded se bhi bht kam.. Monopoly companies kisi hospital / clinic par apne medicine deti h, aur uska ek rule hota h ki wo medicine kahi dusre medical store pe nhi milega, milega bhi toh kisi dusre hospital / clinic pe… Like alkem company meropenem inj banati h 1020 ke mrp pe, uska kharid rate 200-300 ke pas rehta h, wahi ek monopoly company wahi salt ka medicine apne brand name se bana rhi h jiski mrp 4020 h, aur 200 se kam kharid rate h… Baki agar generic ki baat kare toh wo sirf government hospitals me hi dekhne ko milta h… Patient agar kisi medical store pe dawa lene jata h toh agar pharmacist ye bolta h “mere pas same composition me dusri company ki h” toh ye bht achhi baat h…haan yahan pe patient ko ye bolna chahiye ki “thik h de dijiye lekin koi branded company ka… kyuki jahir si baat h, jo medicine doctor prescribe kiya h wo monopoly h, aur monopoly medical store pe milta nhi h

If you get prescribed a given branded mwdicine, google its name to see if it contains single active ingredient of more than 2. If its single active ingredient, then search for generic one. If its more that two, then continue with the branded, unless its generic version is available.

I really appreciate your concern about folk's health, life and financial safety. I also prefer generic medicines. Nowadays PradhanMantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra, Jana Suraksha Kendra, Jana Sanjeevini medicine centrers as well as branded generic medicine shops are easily available in district to village level. If people buy these generic medicines from there, they can save from 30% to 70% very easily depending upon the generic medicine shop. These medicines are as effective as branded brand medicines. Such medicines are easily affordable and pocket friendly, but in some cases all types of medicines are unavailable in generic medicines. Hats off to you buddy, for your unbiased and straight narration. Best of luck 🎉

With my past experience i know which drug is effective and which is not Like govt free supply antitubercular drugs are much effective, tab pcm is effective at govt supply where as generic medicine( pradhan mantri jan aushdhi) not much effective .same problem with antibiotic tab.Azithromycin this is not working/effective from both genric & govt supp .and there are many more examples I know that this medicine not going to be must effective rather i prescribed that medicine just for shake of this rule ki doctor ko govt supply ya generic hi prescribe karna h .thats the reason why in govt hospital 1 hi patient jo 5 din me thik hona tha chahiye wo 20 din thik ho rha h ya nhi bhi.😢😢 Sad reality is tha we govt doctor ilaaz to bahut accha krna jaante h and want to serve my own people but our hand is bounded😢😢😢

If you live in any other country than India you will realise how costly medicines are in other countries compared to India...I literally came to India last month to buy medicines and went back...paid almost 80% less! and yes I bought Generic medicines...but in other countries there is no option for generic medicines.. I was buying a german medicine from CIPLA in the country I live in...I came to delhi and bought the generic version of it ...the chemist told me that the CIPLA medicine is buying the raw material from this generic brand and rebranding it in germany and selling it in tripple the price. So yes guys....don't get fooled by big brands...they are using the same chemistry and rebranding it..

Doctors, by and large, want good for their patients but such information should be made available to the patients about their rights. Unfortunately, most people don't know and doctors don't make them aware - very few do.

But it's also true you should be careful of generic medicine being a pharmacist I can say generic medicine can be cheap but not always safe as they are not tested properly and Theoughly like branded drugs neither their salt mix is even 90% pure.... Generic in sone cases work but in some cases may cause very harmful adverse reactions

As a doctor myself i would like to add a few things 1. The biggest problem with generic drug is there a quality control issue for example if a person is very serious in Icu would you yourself buy him/her medicine from a trusted brand that has tested the drug or from a generic brand that might fail or cause reaction to patient 2. One of the problem with generic drug is there efficiency as well sometimes they don’t work as good as branded drugs which lead for us to loose patients let me explain this by an example a patient x came to my clinic with infection i gave him a generic drug but the drug failed to perform well (in cases of infection if a drug fails to perform well the organism can develop resistance to it as well) patient took that medicine for a week and due to inefficiency of generic drug it failed to cure that patient now the patient will go to other doctor who might prescribe him same drug in branded version and the patient will recover will that patient now ever visit my clinic again ? Also they will tell people arround them that yeh doctor toh bekaar hai ise ek infection thik nahi hua 3. Generic drug are not quality checked which might cause reaction to patient which might lead to law suit against doctor because its very hard to proof that it was drug's fault 4. I am not avoiding the fact that doctors are paid by pharmaceutical companies but please read how much we have to pay as tution fees in a private colleges first for doing mbbs and than for post graduation just in form of money (arround 60-70% population of india can spend there whole life without earning ever in that much amount ) . If you are saying than why don’t you do your degree from a government college than please ask this question to our government and stand with us whenever we ask for increasing the number of medical seat but i assure none of you will ever show up during our protest and will just sip your tea while reading about this on your newspapers like nothing happened . I am not even considering the effort and time we have to give 5. Now you might say that but doctors in usa are prescribing generic drug why can’t you do so as well than please check the money they charge just as fees just to call an ambulance in usa they willk charge you arround 1000 dollars that is 80,000 rs now coming to doctors fees in usa it varies but just to visit a doctor you will have to pay 150-300 dollars (i.e 10000-25000 rs) 6. Even if they control the quality issue of generic medicine i can assure you 95% of doctors are still going to stand against it as we have invested alot to become a doctor if they strictly implement the rule of prescribing generic medicine than you would see 5 to 10 fold increase in our fees Its a hard reality but i am just speaking the facts its no more a doctor patient relationship its a business To fix this you will have to stand with us Most of the nation ignores our problem and never stand with us when we don’t get seats (due to limitation ) when we have to work continously for 48 hrs and come back on duty even after that ,when we dont get our salaries on time , when we get stabbed by patient or beaten by there family members but when the nation needed us (during pandemic ) we were standing tall and strong beside you all and will still do so ❤

It's completely true. About 1 year ago, I went to an eye hospital to get my eyes checked. My eyes were all good. But doctor prescribed me an eye drop, bcuz I am an student and so my eyes used to get dry. Price of that eye drop is around Rs 360 or 380. But some months ago, my parents found a government generic store nearby, and I decided to check if the eye drop was available their. And guess what, yes it was there and the price difference is hilarious, it just cost me Rs 70. Government should promote generic medicines, but at the same time, also check for the scandals.

Yeah true..... Mostly the dry eye problem people get prescribed carboxy Methylcelulose which vary in price from 100 to 300 all branded and which is not every vital medicine too.... But when it comes to meds like moxifloxacin, or sodium hylorunate, etc you should be careful of generic meds as a pharmacist and worked for a generic companies I would say they don't purify the meds well nor their efficacy is any good it may cause aone adverse reactions on later time and you can't even guess it's because of that generic med

Generic and non generic medicines are not same in case of quality, their active ingredients (the main camical components, components of a medicine that have a therapeutic effect on the body) are same but inactive ingredients (aka Excipients include fillers, binders, coloring agents, preservatives, flavorings, and more) are mostly different which significantly effects the function of a medicine. Its not just about availability.
