I had all this BS with the bike shop and wheels Manufacturing when I bought one of their PF30a centre threaded BBs. It was loose in the frame and clearly undersized coming in at 45.92mm. Wheels fobbed me off with the BS that frames are all over the place as if that was an excuse for them turning out BBs that were out of spec. Their next one was to tell me that the cups needed to be greased and that the thread centre tube was to be tightened up to clamp the bb in place across the shell. This is of course BS because a pressfit should be carrying the load by radial interference fit and should be fitted with compound between the alu BB and carbon frame (I know this because I have several contacts at Henkel through my job and have dealt with them in various design queries, and they know what they’re on about). Wheels continued their nonsense but wouldn’t accept my push back even though I’ve spent nearly 20yrs in engine design and know a thing or two about fine tolerances, such as crank bearings. Anyhow Hambini sent me a gauge to check the BB bore on the frame and was just in spec, so wheels got their scrap aluminium BB sent back to them and I bought a Hambini BB instead in Sept.2021 - fit and forget. The simple fact is consumers shouldn’t be having these arguments with component suppliers; and we shouldn’t have to wheel out the technical explanations to prove the issue. It’s fine if you can do that but many people can’t and they’re getting rinsed by customer service bull shitters and companies that know full well their products are crap.

I'm excited to see your take on ZFC. I used to be a big fan of his, but one thing bothers me. If lubricant brands pay him to test their products, how can he claim his results are unbiased? Are we supposed to believe he's immune to that influence? He even boasts that some brands hire him so often he offers them discounts. If he published negative results, he’d risk losing income-naturally, that would make anyone favor certain brands. *Cough cough Silca* Yet, people always refer to him as the only independent tester out there. Am I crazy, or isn't it true that once you accept money from the brands you're evaluating, you lose the claim to being an independent tester? In real science, those results would be dismissed due to conflict of interest. I used to be a big fan, but after testing a lubricant he criticized and finding it completely different from his assessment, it’s clear something’s off.

Based on my experience such as it is, the source of all that’s good or bad between a manufacturer, their product, and the customer, usually starts with whoever comes up with ideas for shit like this. And then it’s passed on to the designers and engineers along with a budget that they have to live with to make it a viable product for retail sale. In most cases the result is shit and the customer service who are in the trenches are left to fend for themselves with just their dicks in their hands, because the other individuals in the chain of responsibility either don’t care (because they’ve done their job) or they’ve been thrown onto other tasks. This doesn’t include marketing whose job is to push product out the corporate sphincter. In an ideal world, customer service gets the backup it needs from design and engineering if/when there’s a problem with product. But with the bicycle industry, such things are virtually nonexistent. And people in the trade wonder why consumers hate on things and end up seeking responsible and knowledgeable types for solutions that manufacturers should own up to.

These are my favourite Hambini features: "the manufacturing is crap and is done by clowns AND this is how I fixed it". Question for the preload - would it be possible to add the washer on the other side? I think I did something like that with a CX bike that I originally had as 2x in front. There was not enough clearance with my preferred front derailleur (FSA energy, wide range) on the inside. So on the crankset I put the wave washer on the non-drive side. Not sure if this was best and probably could have used spacers instead (have a very good set of many different thicknesses!), but it's currently ok. And better than the usual mess with my other SRAM cranks where adjusting spacing/preload is much more complicated because of their "we only adjust on one side" system. EDIT - ah, saw that the preload question has been answered already. Thanks again! And from all these videos what I've learned is stay away from 30 mm cranks like the plague.

@rollinrat4850 You said, _"If you need to use a hammer to tap the crank spindle through the cups, you have an issue. The two threads are not concentric and or the faces are not square and parallel"_ I don't mean to argue with you but it's the threads that establish the orientation of the bearings, and not the frame's BB face, right? Those threads fit very tightly and there's no way a mis-aligned face will ever alter the bearing's orientation. So the two threads have to be machined concentrically in order for those hollow tech bearings to be aligned such that there's no need to hammer the shaft into the other bearing. That's why those cartridge-type BBs were better IMHO because you have one thread that's metal (on the cartridge itself) and the other one is a non-metallic material of some kind--it will allow for a certain amount of inaccurate machining of those those BB threads. I'm dealing with this very situation on my new Surly frame right now.
@MrJx40003 ай бұрын
@rollinrat4850, Holy shite! How long did it take you write all this?
@MrJx40003 ай бұрын
@rollinrat4850, well, well, look at what KZbin just included in my recommended videos today: *_"It's on the Inside That Counts | Tech Tuesday _**_#158_**_"_* This is 4-years old now and is somewhat applicable to our discussion. You can't post links in YT comments but the title is okay I believe. My new Surly frameset that I bought has those BB threads off kilter. I ran the proper threading taps to chase the threads and then tried assembling the bearing cups and shaft--the bearing cups were not aligned. I wasn't going to pound the shaft in with a hammer so I gave up for the time being (this was last summer at a community bike shop). Surly sells this frame in a complete bike assembly (the Preamble) and uses square-taper cartridge-type BBs. They work fine. I've seen this assembled bike in my LBS. I'm going to try chasing the threads again to see if that helps but if the hollow shaft will not slip in easily on the other side, I'll have to go to a cartridge BB. The threads are what align the bearing cups, and no amount of face machining will change that. Machining those faces only eliminates any gaps that might appear and possibly allow for moisture to seep in (I know it'll get in anyways but you do what you can to minimize it). And thanks to the Great Hambini, I would've never known that these manufacturers will produce the kind of "shite" quality that they do.
@MrJx40003 ай бұрын
@rollinrat4850, yeah, that frameset is not returnable because it was on sale last year. And as I said earlier, it'll probably work fine with a square-taper cartridge BB so they (Surly) will probably not accept responsibility. The only thing I can think of is to heavily "chase" both BB threads to see if that allows for a better alignment in the bearing cups. If that doesn't work, then it's goodbye hollow tech BB and hello cartridge BB. I'll let you know how that works out when I get around to it again.

What's really strange about this design is that the wave washer looks to be loading the whole face of the bearing rather than just the inner race that spins with the crank and spacer, unless the spacer is shaped to transfer the load only to the inner race. It looks like a rectangular cross section ring, but this could be subtle. Tightening the tolerances a little and adding a Belville washer instead of the wave washer might be a fix that gets more of the bearing on the bearing seat on the axle and will accommodate wear without play instantly appearing, but I don't know whether these washers are available off the shelf to do this - getting custom parts made would be very expensive per crankset unless you were doing thousands of them though.
@jaro69853 ай бұрын
The spacer has a lip, so the outer race is cleared, which you can see in the video. Praxis wouldn't mess something simple like that up. I don't know if they make bellvilles with low force ratings for this application. Maybe higher would be OK though..

Great stuff as usual. No idea oni the technical details really, but surely when praxis supply this to Infocrank (i assume), they should start making the bearing seat a bit longer. What I don't understand is why people continue to buy expensive shit like this? I have a Shimano BB M815 on all my mtbs and it works perfectly fine, with a second hand Shimano crankset. Did you still didn't realise that the cycling industry is lying to you? Buying second hand is much better, usually you have time to process what is good or not. Anyway bad stuff never have time to finish on the second hand market, because they are all broken before. I mostly ride stuff that have 10 to 50 years, on my mtb and road bike, I rarely have mechanical issue.

Can you recommend me a 170mm crankset for my new Hambini SRI bottom bracket on a 73mm wide mtb frame with boost hubs? I am ditching a creaking Hope Stainless BB with Hope Evo crankset. The spindle is most likely worn out against the steel bearings. I changed the BB bearings and it still creaks. Raceface Aeffect? Shimano XT? XTR?

The _Rice Krispies_ of powermeter cranks. You can hear _Snap, Crackle & Pop._
@@sylvainmichaud2262 Statement by support: "We see very few of these (a few more on Classics, very few on M30’s) but it seems that pedalling style (with some twist) weakens the metal over time, so then it eventually breaks ‘suddenly'. The metal testing is done straight down the edges and the cranks will last a lifetime in that direction, however, with a twisting style introduced, their life is more limited. The couple of riders who have broken M30’s and had them replaced, have broken the next cranks too, while at the same time we have had Olympic Team riders ride the same cranks for many years without them breaking - so it seems there is something in the style that makes the difference. We have taken that into account in the design of IC2 and this is made in a ‘hollow' box shape design, in order to be stronger in the twisting directions, as well as the normal pedalling direction. We believe this will give the IC2 a longer life for all cyclists, no matter their style."

On my praxis works BBs the NDS bearing has a little sleeve insert reducing the ID and accommodating the step down of the shaft. Does the infocrank implementation have this?
@Hambini4 ай бұрын
Yes, no problem on the non drive side, it's only the drive side

Info crank's electronics are good, they made the mistake of teaming up with Praxis.
@kipcc39184 ай бұрын
If praxis makes the crank arms, Who did the spindles? So the powermeter is crankbased or spindle based? Seeing where the error was the bearing seat? Or I’m wrong here? 😅
@bryantaylor19833 ай бұрын
The parent company of Praxis made the cranks, the spindles, the chainrings and the bottom brackets. Verve designed and made the power module. And it was done nearly 10 years ago.

I know significantly less than a 5yo but could the preload be on the inside. The full width of the bearing onto the landing and maybe a sleeve from side to side so that both bearings are loaded.

that's how I've done it but the praxis manual which is on their website shows otherwise.

Can the average punter just buy a stack of bearing shim washers and use those to space it to the correct tolerance?
@drayzen96784 ай бұрын
Yes, though you need to add more shims over time to take up play introduced by bearing wear, or regularly replace the bearings. That's why they use a wave washer (essentially a form or spring) so it automatically adjusts.

The part where this can't have every worked is a bit confusing. This should have been an RTM NFG. Does their recommended bottom bracket solve the issue? Double checked their web site and they claim perfect fitment with a Shimano bottom bracket.
@jaro69853 ай бұрын
Thats the infocrank IC2, not this one. Their newer crank uses 24mm steel spindle, probably because their old one was crap, and shimano's patent might have ran out?

I'm not an engineer. Could you not build a shim to extend the shoulder? Something split in two, that extrudes from a bearing-sized block of metal, held together with a couple of bolts, that clamp it inside the bearing, inside the bb shell? Again I'm no engineer.
