G'day Tom. Nice repair work on that slasher bar. I liked the idea of the "schotch keying" (grub screws) the splined hub into place. Cheers, Aaron.

My bush hog is at least 40 years old and still going. About 10 years ago I had to rebuild the top that the gearbox bolts to. It finally just rotted away. those old mowers are like Timex watches. Take a lickin and keep on tickin.

As a mechanic who worked at a dealership that sold Bush Hog equipment, I can tell you that an air hammer and sometimes heat is the easiest way to remove those bolts. Also a 3/4 inch impact is the easiest way to remove the nuts, but I've had to cut them off with a torch many times. I heard you say that you didn't have a socket so that's not much help to you, but it might be for someone reading my comment.
@hilltopmachineworks21313 ай бұрын
Heat and a press got them thank goodness. Yeah I did not have a socket to fit the nuts. The were an odd size. Not Metric either cause I checked that too just to make sure.

Could that be modified to be a hex drive press fit and then doweled as well so it is driving on the hex flats instead of relying on the press fit and dowels? Guess that would make the internal spline or the shaft on the right angle box the weak points. Awesome repair, now I have some ideas on how to repair my one. Cheers.

I would tap the dowel pin holes and put set screws in them
@hilltopmachineworks21313 ай бұрын
I figured the dowel pins are harder and would hold up better than using all softer set screws. Plus seeing I was tapping into two types of steel, I was worried I might have an issue trying to tap 4 deep holes.
@bcbloc02Ай бұрын
Your customer should probably consider investing in a new crossbar. If that sucker slung out and hit the tire it would cost more for the tire than the crossbar.
