Based on PJ's section of the review I was surprised the final score was only 7/10. Zion's commentary clarifies where the shortcomings are, but if I'd only watched the first half of the video I'd be baffled why this didn't score higher since the reviewer seems to have mostly praise. I get that some games can do everything right and still not be a full 10/10 experience, but the reviewer needs to inject that a bit more into the review.

I can’t say what a Switch remake of Hotel Dusk would be like, because it entirely relied on the DS’s hardware, holding it sideways like a book and interacting with the touchscreen. If you have a 3DS, it’s definitely worth tracking down a copy of the game if you’re interested in it. I loved Hotel Dusk. But on the Switch? It will likely have to be way too different to have anything like the same experience. That said, if Nintendo wanted to give us a wholly new Kyle Hyde mystery designed for the Switch, I’d be eagerly on board.

I played the demo on the Switch and I really enjoyed it. I think there's an intriguing story there that is not just for teens (I'm in my 40's) and I found the puzzles in the demo to be challenging enough without being frustrating or overwhelming (although getting the key out, while a clever concept was a bit frustrating in the execution). I am looking forward to playing the full game.

I like the new artstyle and it's super cool to have this series back in full fledged 3D with (occassional) voice acting, but I can already say from the few hours I've played that the charm of the original artstyle and the pre-rendered backgrounds will never be topped. Also, scanning origami cranes with QR codes, while a fun idea, isn't as cool as finding cartridges with messages.

I agree with you for the most part. One thing I did like though was that the mansion felt a lot more like a real house. As cool as the maze like manor was in the original, I always thought it was a strange layout for a house. My biggest gripe with this remake though is how much of the story details, especially concerning the Edward family, are left out. There were more journals, letters, and photographs that helped flesh the story out more in the original.
@PikaLink91

@@XDanW91 Having just completed the remake I agree with you on the house. The aesthetics in general are amazing. But I also agree on the story suffering greatly with a lot of details missing. I also felt there were not nearly as many puzzles this time. Conclusively the remake is a fine entry point for new fans and I'm glad it exists, but it is no replacement for the original.

I mean I know that some people go to far with the rumors and click bait and stuff, but to say it's an "imaginary console that Nintendo might be working on" is kinda silly. The switch is 7 years old, which is already pretty old for a console, and I couldn't find it but I swear I heard way back in the first like year or 2 that they intended for an 8 year lifespan, regardless the switch is just so old that there's absolutely 0 chance they're not working on a new console, and by working on, I mean devs probably already have dev units, I highly doubt it'll release later than like holiday 2025

Zion’s half of the review was so much more informative, critical and balanced that it really leaves you wondering why NintendoLife doesn’t leave behind this awkward Frankenstein format of “written by some random dude, made into a video by me”. The consistency of a critic’s voice is important. I never know whose “voice” I’m actually hearing when I watch a NL review.
@jaykebird2go
@jaykebird2go 11 ай бұрын
I think the video reviews are pretty good at denoting when the original review ended and the video editor puts in their own thoughts - Alex usually puts in a whole transition, which I think would've helped your complaint if Zion had done that too. I like the video team adding on their own thoughts as they can give extra context and some extra anecdotal thoughts, but yeah, in this case, Zion's section felt like it overshadowed the actual original review. (Kind of makes me wonder if maybe it was better if Zion just handled the whole review of this game from top to bottom.)

I never played the Wii game despite wanting to get it so many times (I just had a limited budget and other games were higher on my priority list) and I never owned a DS, but those games have always intrigued me. And after playing the demo I immediately went and purchased the full game. That's how engrossed I was in the story! And since I don't mind slower games at all (I like a soft experience once in a while), this game is definitely for me. We'll see how it goes but I'll definitely start playing it again tomorrow when it officially releases!

Just finished playing Another Code: Two Memories as someone who adored Trace Memory as a kid (I beat that game in one day and stayed up way too late to make sure I beat it one day again), and I could feel some differences in the back of my mind (I kept dreading the accursed "close your DS" puzzle as it was the ONLY ONE I couldn't do my first go-around of Trace Memory), and I ran into some glitches with the DAS that were annoying, but I really absolutely adored the game and the visuals of the remake. The story is SO GOOD, D is my baby boy, and I'm so excited to finally get to play the sequel!!

I remember I too was around 13-14 yo when I played Another Code and not only was it my first Nintendo DS game, but it also introduced me to the adventure novel genre. So glad to see Ashley and co. are getting a remake! This one and Hotel Dusk were my favorite games of all times (and still are). Even if there are some differences between the remake and the original, I'll think of giving it a try to feel a bit of the nostalgia and see the story through another perspective thanks to the animations and the dubbing. But not gonna lie, what makes me happier is that more people will be able to experience this game series with its revival! Thanks for the review!

I can't wait to get my copy, this short series never really hit my radar back then and after hearing so much of it years later, I'm glad I finally have a chance to experience both games. I definitely want Hotel Dusk and Last Window to get the same treatment, I'd be interested in knowing how they would approach the iconic pencil sketch-y character portraits. One implication I hope gets explored from this release and hopefully a Hotel Dusk and Last Window remake would be that these short lived series from long ago get new entries as well to continue on their narratives because for me someone like Kyle Hyde has an ongoing story that I would very much want to see more of.

Review of Another Code Recollection: Although technically better in almost every way to the original games (of which I played both), it's spiritually nowhere near as appealing, as the remaster essentially attempts to upgrade them into "Life is Strange: Anime Edition", but it does everything slightly worse and more stale/outdated compared to something like Life is Strange, and in general it feels very much like a very bland and middling subpar version of better games in the genre. I think that those with extreme nostalgic memories of Tracy Memory/Two Mmeories, and especially those with vivid memories of playing the sequel Another Code R, will be thoroughly entertained by the ongoing "whoa, this is what I remember playing, but with voices & 3D environments & stuff!" feeling. New players will be left with a feeling of "tis was okay". Overall just very "meh". as far as an actual game is concerned. It loses the charm that made the originals so good. As someone who played the original Another Code R, I can tell you that for all its flaws, lack of voice acting, and general late 2000s Wii jank, I prefer the original version. The version in this is technically better in almost every way (and they included a new plot twist, which was a nice surprise for anyone who played the original), but as a result the game just ends up being a very okay, and vaguely enjoyable experience. Whereas the original game, for as janky and flawed as it was, felt much more emotionally fulfilling--because it was such a clear janked up passion project sequel to an obscure (and not that critically well received) game that was clearly made because those involved just felt passionately about Ashley & her story and wanted to tell you more. Which is a feeling this version just completely lacks. It seems weird to critize a game for being "too good", I know, but here we are. That is the exact problem. It loses its charm and thus it loses any reason for really being loved so fondly. Overall (TLDR); The middling low 70s metacritic is entirely fair. It's a technically better game, but at the consequence of removing the charm that made the originals, particularly the Wii sequel, actually appealing in the first place). What you're left with is a very 'okay' game that isn't really anything special, and just leaves you with a somewhat bland feeling.

I've only recently started playing the sequel on Wii and although it is a very clunky experience, I'm finding it charming and pretty good, considering how long ago it was released. I downloaded the demo on the Switch for the remake and so far, apart from the visuals, which are really lovely, feel somewhat underwhelmed by it, which is a real shame as this was one of the new releases in 2024 I was most looking forward to. It doesn't get much better gameplay wise. I've replayed the original recently because I remembered to no not liking it that much in the past and I remembered why: the story does get a little better and it is interesting to follow until the end, but both the puzzles and the exploration remains painfully simple all the way through the game. Nowadays I would only recommend this for really begginer gamers or for someone that wants to have a purely relaxing time without having to think too much about anything. And I wouldn't recommend paying full price for any of these cases, really it is sensibly overpriced as it is.

Between this and the Advance Wars remakes (and Golden Sun on NSO), it seems like Nintendo sees the fans of these niche forgotten series, but they don't seem interested in really throwing a big budget at them. One of the first games I played on the DS, alongside SM64DS. As good as SM64DS was, I was hooked with Trace Memory or Another Code as I prefer that to be the game's title. The art style was incredibly striking and while the game was short, it was just about enough to be one's introductory to the adventure genre or still be entertaining for people who are used to it. And yes, everyone who played the DS game remembers the puzzle which Phantom Hourglass ripped-off of. It's unfortunate that there are some drawbacks to this remake, but it's such a big part of me that I'll be sure to get. Call it a blind purchase, I suppose.

The only thing I didn't like about the game's demo was the camera. It's too bad, and too close to the character. It could be centralized and distant like the Zelda BotW camera.

I had a weird fascination with this series, only cause I remember seeing ashley in the smash bros. Brawl sticker collection I bought and played the game in the last couple years, was sad to hear no NA port of the sequel Now im excited to try both remakes, I was expecting some hiccups with graphics and gameplay from such different harfware, but it makes me giddy to see remakes of cult games that can get talked about again

I loved Trace Memory back in the day, but I'm glad the remake does away with a lot of the gimmicky controls of the earlier titles. I liked the touch controls back then, but I've grown out of it. The best part of Another Code has always been the story, and I'm happy being able to play it with a traditional pro controller. The few times it does implement motion controls, like with that stool early in the game, was kind of annoying honestly. Thankfully, the stool was the most annoying part of the game. And that kind of stuff was kept to a minimum. I loved this remake, and I hope Kyle Hyde's games get the same treatment.

The title is familiar, but I have no other memory of this series... Seem like I missed out on something. I am, however, just starting to play Boku no Natsu Yasumi on PS2 (a backup version) - which is a game that also starts with arriving somewhere on a ferry, and also seems to be largely about the atmosphere and strengthening family connexions. So far it's a really nice time. Btw, Another Code is really Nintendo in-house?

Never played the original versions, but now I wish I did, they made Ashley a real 10/10 character to the point that I'm thinking of playing through a second time just so I can enjoy her charming interactions once again. Also, I read in a reply to comment by a KZbinr that there was some intention for this series to get an actual crossover game with the Hotel Dusk franchise, so maybe we could see both series get turned into trilogies which would be freaking huge. DO IT, NINTENDO AND ARC SYSTEM WORKS, I DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU!!!

I really wanna buy this but I have no idea if there's any way to play this in handheld using my Hori joy-cons. I was playing the demo but was stopped dead in my tracks when the very first motion-based puzzle came up. Literally had NO way to tackle it and had to stop there which was a massive shame! Also baffling seeing as Hori are officially licensed by Nintendo, but that their joycons simply won't work.

The Hori Split Pad Pro has no gyro unfortunately. I would really like to see these devs add a no-motion option if you just want to use control sticks to tilt stuff.
@DizzyDiddy

The Switch system has its own gyro. It could still have worked with controllers that lack gyro if the devs had chosen to implement it. Maybe they'll add it in a later update.

Loved this game and will play it again! Was never a dull moment and ran really well. I am glad the puzzle were not difficult. Getting stuck in hard puzzles ruins a game. I used the hints a few times to make sure I didn't get stuck for long. The hint system worked great. I will play this game again for sure.

As someone who enjoyed games liked teh ace attorney series, danganronpa and 13 sentinals games, this game does not deliver in the ways of big wham lines or twists, but has a beautiful presentation and a nice ride to playthrough especially the first game, the second one is definitly more cozier, but is stil enjoyable. The fully voiced English scenes are nice and the puzzles are nice to solve. I would say give it a try if you like story based games with a decent story, just dont expect any wtf moments

I can't wait to pick up my copy. A friend had sent me his copy of Trace Memory back in the day as he wanted to get rid of it, and omg I loved every second of that game...must have played through it at least 20 times. My love for Trace Memory even led to me buying Hotel Dusk and importing a PAL copy of Last Window, both of which I also loved ( side note: the mentioned puzzle that loses something without the DS's capabilities...there's a similar moment in Hotel Dusk that I can see having the same issue. if you know you know ). I too hope this duology remake leads to a Kyle Hyde duology remake ( never feels right to me saying Hotel Dusk series/franchise....it's just the 1st game's location. I always preferred to use the protagonist Kyle Hyde's name for the series )...and ffs Nintendo PLEASE localize Buddy Mission Bond

I don't have a Switch but like older Nintendo games... I was looking into the fact that Waluigi once had a website (...as one does) and got redirected to the Nintendo eShop... Saw this at the front page and was like "Ooh this looks pretty... Point and-click? I've been playing those lately! ls it on Steam?..." and just my luck it's a Nintendo game 😭 but l might look into playing the original game sometime, I still have my 2DS lying around...! Been meaning to also play Kingdom Hearts 358/2 cuz I guess I just really wanna be depressed while playing an old handheld...

With the bad textures on a lot of things and the simplified/downplayed puzzles from the original game, I think what we can ultimately take away is that Recollection is a nice return to a longdead duology that graphicswise looks modern and fantastic... but it has lost so much on the gameplay front. The remake is a nice enough entry point for new players... but if you fall in love with the remake, you OWE it to yourself to experience the original.

So take it as a novel, the story is worth it! I know the first one's story was worth it! But don't gonin expecting too much of the puzzles. They're there to give you a feeling of investigating yourself, but they aren't challenging or hard. Like Resident Evil, but with a mystery game and no zombies!
