My thoughts and problems associated with running a CNC plasma cutter. Starts at 14.14.
"I mention about shielding in the video but the clear coated wires, i should be saying grounding wires."
During the cutting of the Eiffel tower i had more that 20 miss fires, checked the consumables and the silica gel beads all OK, then remembered some thing on the net a long time ago about miss firing can be from to much air flow Jasic Manual said 5 kpa but i lowered it to 4 kpa and it fixed the problem.
The thing that i am happy about being retired is this not to make money and i don't make this stuff to sell. This is just a hobby for me and the things i make are for decorating our apartments or i give to friends that i know.
At the end are some things i have made as well.

Smart on the chassis and electronics grounding, i had the same issues and i believe its just the nature of the beast when it comes to plasma tables...... All should take a note here.....

Tyler, 8 months ago I added a drilled a hole next to the ground rod and have a funnel to it. i add water all the time and don't have any miss fires at all now! Thanks for your comments.

Good on you Ross. That looks like a terrific setup for a hobby shop. I bet some professionals would be envious. Keep the great work. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ross, it has been good to see your creation, I also live in Thailand and have built a 4' x 4' wet table using a Welpro Cut 60 Plasma, Nema steppers etc. I run Mach 3 and Sheetcam. I also suffer with miss fires, it is so frustrating, still working to solve the issue, but getting to the point of giving it up. I agree Thai import duty is criminal, the rest of the world should impose similar import duty on Thai products.

philip, Hows your table going! I've been really soaking the soil around the ground rod for the last 6 months and no more miss fires. Keep well my friend.

The Dross is from the improper water height.... on thin plate, try the water closer to the plate and the dross will minimalize.....

I hear a lot of people talk about grounding and shielding with DIY plasma setups. What I found is if you use a real plasma power source (Hypertherm) then you just plug everything in and it just works. I run a powermax 85 and maxpro 200 never had any strange miss fires or problems.

by "real plasma power source" you mean "blow back" rather than "high frequency" type of pilot arc?

Very good your cnc, I saw your comment on the costs of fees above 100% In Brazil it is much worse here absurd taxes inside and outside to import and a Russian roulette because you never know how much will be the stab of the rate that is predicted at 60% but sometimes there is a case that the tava reaches up to 3 times the purchase price depends on luck and there are states that charge another tax on top of the rate applied by customs is not easy

If people say you do this and that wrong just to see their set up, 👏👏👏👏 looks good, one of my suppliers of cut blanks if they use there old machine [not DIY built] the kerf is crap it's like a 45 deg tapper and the dross is shocking so yours my friend looks good.

Thanks for the comment, A good constant air supply and trying to get the cutting tip close to 1.5 mm from the sheet is giving less tapper on the cuts. All we can do is our best with what we have, if only we could have the money to buy the best on the market. Thanks again.

@@rosswoolley2854 Im in the uk so my supplier doesn't have the same trouble as you on imports which just sounds crazy on taxes, my supplier of parts is just running the machine with worn out parts and a torch that looks like scrap, they have just brought a new supper high def machine but carnt get it to cut with out a cough and a fart. I would love to build my own but have no ideas of electrical experience, i can do all the milling and welding thats the simple bit so hats off to you 👍

@@ricardo-iw9sq No worries about that, It's hard to say if you would get your money back on a plasma build. Cause you still need the drawing software, there is always hidden costs and teething problems with it. I built mine cause i needed a hobby, plus i thought i could decorate the apartment with plasma art! The only thing that i think is if you have spear cash to to throw away it is good to have, Bad thing is the whole work shop will get a black film of metal dust over it and your lungs will be the same! That might be the main thing 'Health" Take care Ross.

you need water additives made for plasma table no rust, i would run your water up to the bottom of your sheet metal that you are cutting

Thanks for the reply. I would like to add an additive But when you live in Thailand it is very hard to acquire a lot of things plus the price is up to 4 times dearer. Can't even find Borax here! I just use bore water on the table and just drain it after cutting. Cut some stainless the other day with the water filled like you said, still had the crusty edge but very minimal. Just finished a compressor build and am waiting for the local Tig welding shop to weld things up for me. Will do a video of the finished when i get the stainless back. Will be worth looking at when i post it.

If you pause at 26:13 you will see just right of the censer switch the linear rod. i placed a strip of coke can under the tab as a spacer before welding the tab to the rod. Then remove the spacers and it will give a snug fit when tightened down. Thanks for the interest in the build.

@@rosswoolley2854 Thanks for the reply, I was planning to do the same but I only can buy steel shafts C45 and they are very hard to weld, you need to pre heat the shaft and control the cooling temperature or else the weld will crack because of the carbon content. I have not found a shaft yet that is easy to weld.

@@emel6956 I just found the linear rod on aliexpress, not sure of the hardness but it had hard chrome surface. You could try stainless linear rod as a different option it should be OK. The Y axis is just bearing shaft and is harder than mild steel, i could buy it at the local Thai steel shop.

For your shielding did Masso and HyperTherm provide better documentation and guidance?
@rosswoolley2854
@rosswoolley2854 3 жыл бұрын
It might be best to look up "Hyper-therm Shielding" in Google it will be a PDF format. I have a cheap plasma cutter, but i think it would be best to run shielded cables on everything and ground all moving parts on the table plus everything you put in the control box. Ferrite beads for a bit of extra safety. Keep the drivers and power supplies a foot or more away from Masso. Use a metal plate in between them to separate from the Masso. Plasma cable should be 150mm from all other wiring, that is why i ran it on the over head runners. Cheers Ross.

The water wasn't high enough. It could have come up to the base of the sheet of metal i was cutting! Hope you liked the video. I have learnt a lot since i first built the cnc plasma.
