I actually really love them as Roger and Mimi - I think their chemistry is insane and yeah, they give a very different vibe to Roger and Mimi - they feel younger and angrier in this than in most versions, but I really do think it works. I'd love to hear what this cast's take on the show would be now, a few years on, on an actual stage and not a concert venue.

I'm actually extremely irritated by the people complaining about Aaron's singing voice, because I feel like many of the commenters are blinded by bias. Yes, Aaron is no Adam, yes his voice is clear and doesn't have the raspy vibrato that Adam has doesn't mean he doesn't fit the role! A handful of people with voices that have more things in common with Aaron's than Adam's have played Roger, and not everyone is Adam Pascal. I'm even more surprised by the amount of people who are slamming his acting, as he is extremely talented and I can vibe with all emotions he portrays. Not meant to instigate, just expressing an opinion that happens to contradict many comments existing on this video.

I think the problem with Vanessa's acting is she keeps looking to the audience for help, as if we should take her side and help convince Roger to leave. Like yes you're supposed to face the audience so they can see your face but not include them in the narrative. She barely sings to Roger at all, instead looking around her like she needs people to back her up. It doesn't even seem like she's trying to convince him but convince the audience. I commend her for trying a tough role but Mimi is a hard part and I just don't think she had the experience to pull it off. She did much better as Rizzo, a lot more mature too.

To be frank, the only song she didn't do justice was Out tonight. The rest were pretty good. And I don't understand why people keep hating on her for this. If she wasn't good or talented she wouldn't have been offered the role on Broadway before Hollywood Bowl, she wouldn't have been casted in this and now she wouldn't be getting ready to headline a workshop for a production that will hit Broadway this fall. People hate on her just because they want to hate. She is quite talented and people need to get their heads out of their asses and give Vanessa a chance. All of her latest works in film were quite critically acclaimed as well which proves that she DOES have talent

This one makes me giggle. While Aaron is yelling at Vanessa to get out she's just standing there like "Look how sexy I am". About half way through she gets angry, poor thing looked like she was still out of breath from "OUt Tonight". But she sounds really good on this song! And Aaron nailed everything about it fromt he annoyance to the little soft moments.

Vanessa and Aaron are terrific in this song - their chemistry is strong they did this is only a few days - they are great together. Take this performance of Rent as it was meant to be - a great evening out to enjoy a fantastic score.

this scene was so poorly directed, holy smokes. aaron had his back to the audience wayyyy to . much, and vanessa clearly wasn't given any direction about gesturing/where to put her arms. those things are both the fault of the director, not the actors.

Have you heard Renee Elise Goldsberry and Will Chase? IMHO, I find that they're the best cast duo in Rent so far. Adam Pascall is hella good, he has a great voice, I'm not gonna lie, but Will Chase and Renee just have a lot more emotion in their singing than Adam and Rosario.

3htthexy I couldn't agree with you more! WILL CHASE AND RENEE GOLDSBERRY ARE DEFINITELY MY FAVORITE MIMI and ROGER. Though Adam is GREAT. I mean, the grit in his voice is undeniably amaaaaziiinnng! I LOOOVE WILL CHASE take as Roger though. His "leave me alone and don't mess with me" take on Roger is ABSOLUTELY MIND-BLOWINGLY BRILLIANT! His voice has can go as soothing and as husky as he wants which is why I'm drawn to Will's voice. I think Aaron did a great job as Roger, but for me, he lacked a certaim "rocker vibe" and leaned more on the "loner/emo" type of Roger but still believable. I guess, Will and Adam's angst as Roger just stuck with me and made ROGER, well, ROGER. As for Vanessa, she did okay, I guess her voice was just too high for Mimi. she did relatively well in the other songs (La Vie Boheme A, Light my candle, Another Day, I Should Tell You, Without You), her Out Tonight was alright in the beginning just reached pitchy parts towards the middle, guess it was because of the dancing? I dunno. her parts on Goodbye Love were not that good, maybe it's because she was crying while singing? but her take on Mimi wasn't as bad as many people would say. If people didn't know that she was the squeaky High School Musical Gabriella, people would say she did okay. But, WILL CHASE and RENEE GOLDSBERRY are still the BEST ROGER and Mimi for me. Their chemistry together just overflows everywhere and pierces the hearts of anyone who watches them!!!

The thing that bothers me about this scene is that Vanessa is just standing there looking awkward...after watching the movie and broadway versions, I know that she's suppose to interact with him to try to convince him to take her out...like in the first verse when Roger says "I should tell you I should tell you, I should tell you I should...no" she's suppose to touch him in some way that causes him to say no, she just looks very awkward standing there and she's fucking smiling...idk about y'all but I wouldn't smile if I was getting rejected, I'm not blaming anything on the actors, I blame the directors...on the bright side Vanessa actually sounds pretty good in this, I just came from the "Light My Candle" performance and after cringing from that, I'm pleasantly surprised by her voice in this

As much as I love Aaron, appreciate how talented he is, and think he's incredible in Catch Me If You Can and Next To Normal, he sounds the same in whatever he does. There were bits and pieces of Roger voice here, but not sustained. He just sounded himself in Wicked too, which is unfortunate. His former co-star and buddy Norbert Leo Butz, I've never heard sound the same twice in any role. Totally agree with @Eve Flockhart on how distracting Aaron is in certain areas. I'm generally just kinda besotted with him. *Off to listen to CMIYC soundtrack...*

In the broadway version, Mimi always kind of smirks and smiles during Roger's lyrics like "haha seriously, Roger, lets just forget this shit and fuck" and not fully grasping his words, just trying to brush them off and get down to the sex. Because she's high. Vanessa's just bad at conveying that subtle and complex state.

I think this song is pretty good. Light My Candle wasn't very good, but I think Aaron got a hold of his voice and Vanessa controlled gets better than in Out Tonight. I like this.

I don't like either of them here. They just don't fit the roles. Sure, Aaron is the "pretty boy front man", but he is FAR better suited for Next To Normal or Catch Me If You Can... He just isn't edgy enough for Rodger. His voice is too Pop to be believable as a rock star. Vanessa has a good voice, but its too sweet. She has a Disney princess voice, not an edgy, heroin- addicted stripper's voice. She would do well in a more fantastical show, not something so grounded in harsh reality. Rosario Dawson and Will Chase are my absolute favorite Mimi and Roger (respectively, of course). They just embody those characters.

I know that some vocal teachers teach people especially girls with a smirk because it forces notes out more than without it. That's how I was taught, so it may not be her smirking in character. Its probably just because she wasn't trained on Broadway.
