omg, I was in an alternative highschool in a city when emo/scene first started and it was an absolute WRECK. Guys skinny jeans hadn't been made yet, so all the scene guys wore tiny girls pants (y2k of course, so super low rise, ugh awful) and always had their boxers poofing out of them, walking around like cowboys and adjusting their moose knuckles. The hallways smelled like fried hair (because this was kinda before beauty gurus and we were all idiots I guess?). The guys especially would dye their hair black and then bleach it so it looked like frizzy orange shit, and then they'd straighten it really badly so it was just fried dead hair sticking out everywhere. Girls only doing their makeup on one eye because the side bangs "covered" the other one. SO MUCH HAIR FLIPPING. It was ridiculous and I'm cringing, smelling burnt hair in my memory, and simultaneously proud of the new kids doing it because it's what scene is actually supposed to look like???
