I was a kid when I heard this for the first time. I didn't understand why this song had my parents tearing up. My father was born during the Jim Crow era in Mississippi, in 1944. My mother (born and raised in Ohio) would visit her side of the family in Louisiana in the 1950s often. They both saw and dealt with....a lot. They're both gone now and I'm a 41-year-old woman having to explain this to my children when they see me tear up listening to this. This cycle desperately needs to end.

Yes Sister I'm an Australian Aboriginal and I'm right there with you. I've got to say I'm 72 and I've been very lucky while a lot of my people, not so lucky. At the same time it didn't matter to me what your background was, if you needed help I would not hesitate to help because to me we are all the same. I’ve heard this song so many times, and I’m a 28 year old white dude, I’m certainly not coming from the same place he was coming from, but at this point in my life, it hits perfect. It perfectly expresses how I feel inside, so desperate for a change, trying to hold on just a little bit longer for something good that’s hopefully right around the corner. It’s just amazing how a song written about a totally different situation, from a completely different person, was not only created for that....it was also created for me, and dozens of other people in different situations. Somehow one song connected all of us. To me songs like this just keep affirming to me that some things are just 10000% meant to be. This song was meant to be written and meant to be recorded exactly how it was, by Sam Cooke specifically, and it was meant to be there for us when we needed it. In the past couple of years, I’ve struggled with my belief in what’s beyond all of this, and lately, more and more songs come around that I’ve probably heard endless times, and they hit me in such a way that I think “there’s no possible way everything is just random and meaningless.” There just can’t be. Everything is far too perfect. Music does that for me. If there were no music, I’m confident I couldn’t live in this world. It may be all I’ll ever have, but it may be all I’ll ever need.

I love me some Sam Cooke. I remember these songs mainly because my older cousins would listen to his music. I was born in the 60's in Texas. I know what racism is about. I have seen it and I have lived it. This is not going to be a popular statement. But it was a lot worse then than it is now. There are good and bad people in every race. There are good and bad police. We have made progress every decade, every year. I remember the conflicts of the 60's and the early 70's. We have started up again and race relations have gotten worse since President Obama came into office. I remember back in school when a Black female friend of mine came to school dressed in KKK outfit and she had no problems. It was for Halloween she rocked it. No one cared. If I remember correctly she won the contest that year for best costume. I remember also being accused when I was like 4 of stealing a shirt by a white woman. You move on and past those things. Those are ignorant people. I don't hate them, but I don't like them either. I don't have time to hate those people. I have no time for them. People talk about slavery in this country. There was slavery for about 80 years. 80 years too long, but still the first man to own a slave was a black man. He owned both white and black slaves and he went to court to get it approved. Before that there were indentured servants. That means they could buy their way out of servitude. When Washington and Jefferson died they freed their slaves. Adams never had any and fought to free them under the Constitution. We had many abolitionist that want to get rid of slavery before the Civil War. The Irish were treated so bad in America that they died by the thousands every year. Not every slaves had a death rate as high as the Irish. There are a lot of thing that aren't talked about in our history that should be, but it wasn't as one sided as a lot of people make it out to be. If were as bad as they make it out to be there would be no people of color in Congress. I also believe that music it a powerful medium. I believe it can bring us together again.

So highly underrated isn’t he? If I mention him to an older person, most of them have at least heard of him, but as far as everyone else goes, they just have no idea. They’ve probably heard him a million times in the movies and just don’t know. He was the R&B star just before Sam Cook (wich strangely he has a very very similer sounding voice, only just a bit of a higher range). He was huge by the late 50s but very few have heard of him today. You should check out his song "My Love Is", at kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmHEdnd5ar1_eKc He also did Fever, I'm Shakin, All Around The World and his version of Flamingo takes the absolute cake. I just love the area were R&B turned into Soul music. A forgotten generation I think.

Sam cooke had 50 top 80 hits in his career one number 1 a couple number 2s at one point had 5 songs in the top 100. and was the second best seller on rca Records behind elvis. It's this generation that don't like to dive into past history for whatever reason but Sam was the 2nd biggest artist not even Willie John outsold Sam cooke. He just died long ago. But he has own street in Chicago called Sam cooke way. Hollywood walk of fame start. Recently he was portrayed in one night in miami.. he has 2 songs in the hall of fame I can keep going lol trust me he was huge in the 60s. It's the way he died that hurt his career that's why they killed him the way they did..that plus Allen Klein shady business tactics nobody is able to sample his music etc. That hurt his career

I'm a 75 yr old and his concert was my first big concert. I was a super white, blonde, blue eyed teenager from the south and myself and my friend were the only caucasians there. I've been listening to this song since it's original release. It still gives me shivers. Mr Cooke was on of the most prolific singer song writers in music, he paved the way for musicians and music. when "THEY"said the meek shall inherit the earth. It was ment to be literal.. Sam, a great R&B powerful singer back in the day, the soul poured out of him. So many hit songs and so sad a talent like Sam was killed at age 33 "1964".. World is a sadder place when artists like this are taken before their time. !
