Luke only has one full season off his belt and Dougie's coming off the tail end of a major surgery, so it makes sense for the Devils to overpay for reliable defense (at least in general, not saying Matheson is the answer) if they want to make a playoff push in the ruthlessly competitive Eastern Conference next season.

The Canucks should definitely be calling up both teams as they do have some assets to play with. Hronek is a bit younger (but will be pricier) than Matheson. Silovs may be a good long-term solution for the NJD.

Such a trade will depend on what player is available when the tenth pick comes around. However there are so many great young players that it would make sense to go ahead. I’d rather get Necas for Matheson straight up or add a bad contract like Dvo another center that could help the canes third or fourth lines.

I wouldn't trade, he can get 70 points+ next year with Slaf being better now, on first line, he was near a point per game player since all Star Game. But, I can see them trade him for a forward, they need a top 6. Even in Nhl 24, I struggle finding anyone playing on the 2nd line, Newhook and Dach are just not enough, they need a great player there or a star... Which I feel they can get in 2 year's. If Habs can get Lindstrom and Iggy man I would be happy or Sennake and iggy... I would be more happy then ever, ever since 1993. We never drafted 2 great players in 1st round, since I'm born... Caufield, Slafkovsky, Price, Pacioretty, Guhle, Mailloux, Reinbacher… These are all players who were amazing or are in the process of becoming amazing players… Sure the Habs haven’t had a Superstar player in a long time, But give it time. Nick Suzuki in my opinion is going to be a superstar he’s already a star player. I think Suzuki has much more offence to give I could see him putting up 80+ points, Slafkovsky in my opinion and I have said this since we drafted him he has 100 point potential like Mikko Rantanen… Caufield won’t be much of a point getter but 30-40 goals consistently I see in him…. Guhle is gonna be a STUD, Lane Hutson will be a PPG OFD and Reinbacher has more Offence to his game than people like to give him credit for… When Roman Josi was drafted everyone said “Roman Josi doesn’t have Offensive upside” 😂😂 how do those people look now?… Reinbacher also had a better PPG than Josi did in his draft year… I won’t disagree that this team still needs 2 Top 6 forwards and I believe they will get one in this draft and trade for another one, but this team does not need a “Superstar” because Suzuki and Slafkovsky will be that in a year or two.. Who thought JT Miller was gonna be a 100 point player? NOBODY lmao… You look at Suzuki he’s more talented than JT Miller is and I’m talking pure talent, Suzuki is still 24 years old by the time he’s 26 he will be a 80+ point player, Slafkovsky Had 50 POINTS! In his 19 year old season and 20 goals that’s way more than Rantanen had when he was 19… Habs fans just need to be patient, Sure we don’t have a player like McDavid who comes out the gate and is a sure shot superstar right away, But we do have players who will be soon… Slafkovsky by the time he’s 22 years old will be a PPG player and by the time he’s 24 he will be a 100 point player 100% mark my words… Also Kirby Dach if he can stay healthy he definitely has Star Upside 60-75 point upside and possibly more, He was a 3rd overall pick for a reason… Habs fans want superstars right now lmao and don’t have the patience to let them develop… Newhook I’m not that high on I believe ultimately he will be a 3rd line player but a good one… Joshua Roy also will be a very good 3rd line player… This team has lots of skill but it’s not gonna happen overnight it’s gonna take a couple more years for these players to develop… In 2 years from now Habs fans won’t be complaining about superstars….

I’m not that big on trading matheson for the 10th, the only way I’d be interested if we traded for the 10th and we’re using that to move up in the draft to secure demidov, other then that I’m not to interested in the 10th I would rather give matheson another year and help shelter Huston, obviously it looks like Hutson is going to be the guy here for a long long time but having a guy like matheson around as insurance would be helpful, and realistically it all comes down to where management thinks this team will be next season, because if all these players that everyone thinks will take jumps next season, it’s not out of the question to say Montreal will be at least sniffing around the wild card scene, I can’t see them making it, especially in the east there’s tons of teams better then them, but if Hutson comes out and lights it up right away, if Montembault and primeau can keep there play up like they did last year or even a bit better, if slafkovksy who I think is going to have a break out season lights it up, if caufield wakes up and starts scoring at the rate everyone thinks he can, or dach is healthy, there’s tons of “if” with this hockey team, which Is why I don’t think they have a chance at playoffs or even really being close, but if management thinks so then I think matheson is here this season and likely even the next season and maybe the habs just let him walk or have him come back as a second pairing defencemen because not all there young d can stay they gotta move some and maybe Matheson sticks around until he is 35

I can’t see the Habs trading Matheson, And they SHOULDN’T! This guy got us 62 points this season and in my opinion he’s not gonna slow down until he’s probably 33-34 years old and even when he does slow down his leadership is so valuable to this team… I think Matheson is going to be with this team for at least the next 3 years. Trade Mathison any goalie other than Fowler and a pick above 26th for 10th OA. Then if we can get either Demidov or Lindstrom with the 5th then best available with the 10 lean toward big tough forwards we are way too small at forward even though getting bigger. Then Surin at 26.

I hate all these Habs trades. First it was Anderson for 2 OA, now it is Matheson for 10 OA... Do Montréal fans/media just over value thier players that much, or do they think the Devil's GM is that bad at hockey trades? And, to break it down further, even if he was worth 10 OA, the Devils got 3 talented offensive D-men on the team with Hamilton, L. Hughes, & Nemec; and thats without mentioning Casey waiting in the wing. I think this is the perfect opportunity for Conroy and the Flames to pull their weight and see if he can get a king's ransom from New Jersey in exchange for Marky. The Flames would be better off blowing up the core rather than attempting the Benning-esque task of trying to add mediocre players to an already mediocre team, and hijacking this year's draft with some well-timed trades would be a great start to building toward their future.

Love Matheson but a 10th ovr is an automatic trade, especially considering MTL’s defense. Sure you wouldn’t have a 1st defenseman for a few years but you would add another high end talent, like Yakemchuk, Eiserman, Iginla, etc.

Hahaha no chance NJD would trade the 10th for such a mediocre player. The only players on the Habs that would be of any interest to NJ would be Suzuki, Caufield, Slaf, Wifi and Hutson. Now outside of Wifi the 10th alone wouldn't be enough for any of those players but NJ fans would riot if Fitz traded the 10th straight up for a bum like Matheson.
