Sherliza Moé hey i have a question and i would love to know your opinion: madonna has an album called ray of light from 1998 and her whole tour and some music videos are highly inspired by asian culture in imagery. do you think that is problematic? if you want an example look up for the “Nothing Really Matters” music video. Your answer is very important to me cause i’ve never had an opportunity to ask someone actually asian about it.

Honestly it’s not the fact that they’re non-Asian, it’s the fact that the didn’t properly train in Korea. If you wanna be a non-Asian kpop artist, you have to do the bare minimum and respect + learn the language and culture IN KOREA. The fact that they’re profiting off of Korean culture and it’s clear most of them don’t really care about kpop, is just what makes it uncomfortable and cringe to see. I don’t mind seeing non-Asians in kpop, I just beg of them to do the bare minimum and go to Korea and train, instead of this whole “uk kpop” bullshit. It’s clear that Simon Crowell (who created kaachi) just wants to profit off kpop without actually caring about it or the Korean audience.
@b4rry420
@b4rry420 3 жыл бұрын
i agree. the non-korean asian kpop idols face so many issues on top of difficult training, like cultural differences and language barriers. the fact that they don‘t have to go through that and can immediately profit off of the industry is already annoying. i also agree that i think these days the kpop industry isn‘t something that only koreans can participate in, considering the amount of chinese/japanese/etc. k-idols. in fact, i would say that it is completely justified wanting to join the kpop industry as a black person, seeing how much the kpop industry appropiates black american culture.

Believe me. As a Kpop fan for 5 years, people who love Kpop so much can be absolutely crazy. For example, there was this guy named Oli London who took it to the extreme; he got plastic surgery to look like a member of BTS. From what I heard, he only does it to get attention but still. There were even others who would straight up stalk the idols. That's how bad it can be sometimes.

The fact that they aren't all Korean but managed to bring their dreams to life and become a K-pop group is really cool and it's encouraging to others to believe in the quote "everythibgs possible", and that demonstrates that no matter who you are, you can become anything you want and do what you love!!! Non asians can be Kpop trainees and idols if they go through that process of training in Korea. They have to have talent, know Korean, and trained in Korea. They could have just been a pop group if they weren't going to train. My opinion *EDIT* They didn't ship themselves with bts and all those rumours aren't true. Looking at them, they have talent but lack some skills, if their company trained them, they wouldn't get much hate I am also sorry for spreading false information and being rude to them. I dont think it’s the issue is having nonasians in kpop. I like that westerners are being introduced in and performing the genre as a nonasian person myself who also frequents kpop, but i saw something that made a lot to sense to me. A person on twitter said something along the lines of “kpop was really great because it put asian people and their faces up where everyone could see them and we were finally getting recognition. But with more and more white people attempting to insert themselves into the genre it takes away all of the magic that there once was to the genre. Once again theyre inserting themselves when they are already at the face of everything as it is now” Not only that but with a lot of these “kpop groups” with one to none asian members, it’s once again as someone said “a slap to the face that they claim that theyre this or that, when they dont know the language, culture and almost none of the people behind them are korean or even asian. Real kpop groups work really hard and some of the trainees dont see their work paying off even then. These “kpop groups” have their debuts handed to them and theyre often times mediocre at best.” Call yourself what you want, but from my opinion, korean words, sounds, makeup and a single korean member does not make you a kpop group. The culture and training needs to be there. (More than one) Asian faces, i feel, are required because that is where they should be highlighted. It’s THEIR music no matter how many of them actually listen to that particular genre. Suppose me as a black person wanted to be an idol, i would be willing to put the work in, i would still know that while i am not more or less important than other members, their representation is more crucial than mine. I cant and i shouldnt take it over and claim myself something that it is not. We are not at that level yet. Its like hiphop, rap, the blues, r&b and soul, theyre all black music and it took a LONG time for nonblack people to finally take to it. But when they did take to it, where it came from was taken advantage of. Even now, people dont realize that those genres came from black bodies. As a person who belongs to a community that has been frequently taken advantage of and monopolized off of, i dont want to see something like that happen to another community of people when it can be avoided, fixed or called out now.

the biggest thing for me is how they were never trainees or spent half of their life even preparing to become a true idol. idols in the kpop industry throw their lives away to train before even debuting. plus the industry is manipulative and mentally exhausting. i didnt watch seventeen get mistreated live for kaachi to walk in without any preparation and start calling themselves “idols”. id have a lot more respect if they started as trainees and got a taste for what its really like to be a kpop idol.

Can I ask something? No hate honestly. Why are you okay with these people having to train like mad and throw the rest of their lives on the back burner just for a chance to become a famous k-pop performer? Are you aware of how much abuse a lot of the members of these groups get in the their industries that push them to develop anxiety and eating disorders? Like Im not saying you want that for anyone. @luskaneseprince
@luskaneseprince 4 жыл бұрын
@@kara7604 Asian is a broader category than just "black", though. Asia is a continent. Although it does refer to someone's ethnicity and their skin color (plus facial features and such) too and I understand your point, there are thousands of Asian ethnic groups that don't have much similarities in terms of skin color/face shape/size/etc. Or do ethnic central Russians, ethnic Turkmenese, ethnic Indian and ethnic Chinese people have a shared look to them, since they're all Asians? The direct analogy would be "African", not black. And we know there are thousands of ethnic groups within that continent too that look nothing alike (they don't even have black skin necessarily). Or I mean, nothing alike is not exactly the correct choice of words, but you get what I mean. Asian as a description of someone's looks doesn't mean anything, ethnically Korean might.

It's like how people would say "I'm like the Cristiano Ronaldo of my friend group". They're not actually comparing themselves to Ronaldo, but rather is using this simile to showcase the fact that they're really good at sports compared to their friends.
