those plates are called gusset plates....well at least that's what I have always heard them referred as. You can find them on premade trusses for roofs or subfloor trusses. I have worked in construction for about 10 years.

Two things. 1st, I've been bit! I've always loved wood, but seeing sawmill slabs has ignited my passion for doing the same. Thank you for that! I appreciate your sincere love for what you're doing and how you share it in such a clear, and unadulterated manner. I think I've devoured *most* of your content in the course a few days! We're all fighting the latest designer cootie here atm... 2ndly - I'm guilty of having gone out in public in my pjs. I work 12hrs a day, 7 days a week (from 1900-0700), and if the dog needs to go out (I live in a suburb atm - just bought 10+ac. of raw land though sooo), or the kids need something - i'm up, i'm clean, I handle it - yes it might be AM for you, but its PM for us night shifters - and I'm typically back to bed to get ready for the next 12hrs. I'm lucky if I get 4-5hrs. of sleep on a *GOOD* day, and i'm not about to waste any of it swapping clothes around just to appease another's JUDGMENT of me. Of course, if I have an appointment, or its a planned outing I wear street clothes, but for an impromptu outing, i'm not bothering most times. Not sure if that comes off as "lazy", but its my life - one I work hard for! "Judge not lest ye be judged" comes to mind. Keep up the awesome content and thanks again! Peace.

I worked quite a lot in the Western Savings/B of A tower in Mesa Az over the past years. The 15th floor was occupied by a large law firm back in the day. The whole suite was finished in mahogany with 12" crown, 8" base, matching casing & crotch mahogany door panels & so much more! All of it perfectly fitted & finished. More than likely a $1,000,000+ job even back then. Beautiful job, they should be SO proud! Wood is amazing & people who don't work with it have no clue. Great job bro!😉👍

I answered a craigslist ad once for a couple peices of wood one was a short slab of what I figured was some blue pine or some cheap buggy stuff. It turned out to be 10/4 walnut with some crotch figure and a void where the two branches came apart and reconnected its 19 inches by 25 inches. The other piece looks to be mahogany it's 4/4 28 inches long and 14 inches wide. They were both free off craigslist! I don't have access to a mill all the time but I do have a buddy with one so we mill some stuff hear and there when I find a tree or some logs I get half of what we mill. A friend of mine works in a log yard in northern PA. Instead of the metal truss thingy they use Log Savers. They are plastic I shaped things that are hammered in the ends of veneer logs to stop a split from growing and preserve the value. And since they are plastic they don't harm the veneer machines.

Those metal plates on the bottom of the log are used when you build truss rafters. Wherever you have a joint or where a piece comes in at an angle you use those plates to join the two pieces of wood together.

You've changed the way I look at logs entirely - even trees. Driving by I'll often wonder what's hiding inside now.

You did good son. I worked in a sawmill during the last part of the 80's. Mostly Doug Fir and Hemlock. I hate to see potentially good cants going to waste. Nice to see someone else has an appreciation for what could be.

We call those plates "Gang Nail Plates" or "Truss Plates". Peter, Wollongong, Australia. Love the videos and keep them coming. P.S. Pajama People are also here in some suburbs of Australia too. .

All this proves is how powerful modern tools are, to be able to make such a clean cut with such a messed up piece of wood. Also how incredible modern stains are, and how staining and good cuts can really make almost any piece of wood look good.

they are called gussets, they are normally used when building roof trusses, pounded in at the joints on the trusses, to strengthen and to prevent joints coming apart.

That trick you do, splashing water on the slabs to expose the grain is awsome. It really does show everything... what do you do with all the slabs you cut?

Dam at home workers and computer nerds and night shift people who have to sleep during the day... they should sleep in their street clothes so they can do things for others who only work 9 to 5,6...... what's worst seeing someone in PJs or someone it clothes too small and their cheeks stick out their tiny shorts and breast hanging over the blouse... or a pair of pants down and the underwear showing and too many tattoos on the body what is it with so many tattoos that an arm is just ink...... Oh well somebody back water raised these human critters!!!!

You can slab logs with a chainsaw mill, not super expensive to get started if you look around for a good used saw.
