I got HiyaCFW with TWiLight Menu++ installed today. I'm having a great time with it, mainly with loading unreleased games and prototypes of games onto it. I might use GBARunner2 to play Diddy Kong Pilot later on.

Royal blue and black on an XL... I'd check the serial number. If I'm not mistaken it was launched in Black, White, Dark Brown, and Royal Blue. Brown was (I think) discontinued after about a year, and blue lasted a bit longer, but Launch Edditions are worth a pretty penny in good condition

I had a DSi XL laying around that wouldnt turn on anymore. I looked it up, and it was as simple as removing the battery and hold the power button for a while, then insert the battery back up. After that I hacked it the exact same way you just showed and was indeed simple enough, tho theres some extra steps in between for HiyaCFW (pro tip: have your 7zip updated or you will fail). Now I can run ROMs directly from the SD, tho I noticed that somewhat heavier games tend to hang (like gen 4 and 5 pokemon games), so I ended up still using a R4 for that instead.

Pigoath he forgot to mention in the video that you can only play DS games if you launch TWiLightMenu through HiyaCFW, otherwise you’ll get a white screen, and because of that, you are limited to a 2GB SD card, because the home menu won’t load with anything higher in other words if you want to play DS games off your sd card, the biggest one you can use is 2gb

Recently bought and modded a DSi, and it has now become my preferred way to play DS/DSi games! I've even dumped some saves from cartridge (using a 3DS) and put it onto the DSi's SD card, and it is awesome! The DS Lite, I have to rely on a cartridge, the 3DS the screen resolution is not the same as the DS, plus the SD card is inside the case. The DSi has the same resolution as the DS, and the SD card is easy to get to. Perfect for the job of running DS and DSi games.

I got a DSi XL to see how good DS games looked as playing DS games on a 3DS never looked right. A few game trades later and I was playing my new-to-me DSi XL and was loving DS games all over again. Light weight, easy on my aging eyes-the system is awesome! Unfortunately, the SD card slot won't hold a card for modding but that's ok. Great video!

This is an excellent video. A Supercard DSTwo can actually emulate the extra RAM of a DSi to turn it into a DS RAM pak if for some reason you want to use the DS Opera instead of the DSi version - Not to mention that it can load guides and play back video in Moonshell as well!

Too bad that cartridge is way too thick. It is a sacrifice to take it out from 3DS. I gave up using it and came back to my original R4 from the last decade because it fits perfectly on any DS/3DS.

I like the dsi for what it is BUT it frustrates me that nintendo did not launched a youtube or netflix app for it,it also frustrates me they nintendo did not come with virtual console games for it, also they did not come with augmented reality cards for it etc,,, Why was it that the 3DS recieved all those luxury’s,because it did not sell well because of it’s high price and the lack of a mario game,but once nintendo drastically lowered down the price and came up with supermario 3D land,alll the sudden the ball did start rolling and despite people did not like that 3D effect and just turned it off it some magically how just sold more then 75 million 3DS systems ,so while the 3DS was a success but again the 3D feature just failed again to make an impression on people,that’s like buying a color tv but turn off the color,that makes no sense.

I'm struggled for an hour because camera app on my dsi LL keep freezing. turns out I had to update the firmware to 1.4.5J ( I have a japanese version) after that I can install unlaunch flawlessly. If your dsi firmware is under 1.4.5x (any region) Just connect to the internet and update. It's work fine for all of my japanese dsi and dsi LL.

Hell yes! Gives me a reason to pull my old DSi out of the closet and dust it off. I have to agree with u about twilight menu as well. Great piece of software. I placed it on a couple of 3ds system I had when I modded them. It does DS games great, but with my experience it seems to struggle with quite a few snes titles. Also is off with a few gba titles as well. This may be user error on my part, but I cannot seem to get my titles up and running. Hopefully this becomes rectified with future updates. Seems like I'm hating on it, but I'm not, I recommend to everyone to put it on D's DSi or 3ds if u choose to mod. It's a fantastic piece of software for a script kitty like me to use. Thanks also to MVG as always for another great video. You and a couple of other KZbinrs inspired me to mod all my softmoddable systems. Only thing I have left is my og Xbox. Having problems with my xplorer360 not allowing me to drag n drop the splinter cell exploit onto my thumbdrive. Hopefully I can figure this out. Anyway, I'll STFU. Thanks again!

To me, the Nintendo DSi is the ultimate version of Nintendo DS. This is the last handled by Nintendo that I appreciate so much, and sometimes I take it out of the cupboard, during holidays, to play again some great DS games and a few games downloaded from the DSi Ware when it still worked. Thank you very much for this video, I didn't know that this console could be hacked, and it's pretty interesting to discover this, and to think about all the things I can do now with this amazing device. Previously, I thought that only PSP could be hacked. By the way, my PSP Slim and PSP Go are still very useful even after all this time. But concerning the Nintendo DS, I only knew the existence of the R4 cards to transfer all the DS games you wanted into it, and I didn't consider this as a real hack but just piracy. Fortunately, thanks to you, now I know it's possible on DSi, even if I don't know if the same stuffs are available by this way compared to a PSP Custom Firmware. Nevertheless, it's very exciting. To conclude this comment, I wanted to say that I follow your channel since a few times (a few months approximately), and I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality of your work, at each video I could watch. You succeed to share your passion with your viewers/subscribers, you give many interesting information about the devices you talk about (history, features...) and you even provide tutorials to people who could be interested in hacking their consoles. Even though I'm a French guy, with a bad level in English, I've never been disappointed by one of your videos, and finally it's not a problem at all to follow your content easily (when the topic is interesting it's easier ^^). I'm having lots of dsi & dsi XL in my collection roughly around 15+...& suddenly now they r all HACKED...worth investing on those cheaper handhelds....around 15$ to 30$ each....

I remember buying the blue DSi XL. I loved that thing. Definitely my favorite DS model. I wish this hack existed 9 years ago.

yeah, the 3DS alongside DS flash cards pretty much turned attention away from the DSi until much later when people realised DSiWare exploits could be so useful for 3DS, then the shop closed on DSi so they turned attention to pre-installed stuff

Just hacked my 3DS since official support is pretty dead, was pretty simple (and also made use of Flipnote), just a lot of steps. I was on the latest official firmware version. I watched a video about the Pokemon Crystal Clear rom hack and decided to hack my 3DS to play the rom on the go. I just downloaded the last available rom, since I was too lazy to patch my copy of Virtual Console Crystal.

After being frustrated with the scaling on the New 3DS for DS Games (even with TWPatch and filters), I will be looking into a DSi. Seems like the experience for playing the DS catalogue would be way better. Emulation looks the best, but compatbility isn't quite high enough for me to ditch the systems entirely.

Qbe Root they could've included it but it made the system more fragile and could break easier, it would have also made it more expensive

I think the point was that the GBA slot was used as entry point to hack the system. The GBA mode of the NDS was easy to hack. No point in trying to fix the security of an old operating system. Logical step was to remove the slot. The internet browser is secure and SD hacks like sudokuhax where patched by FW updates. Initially the strategy worked well for Nintendo. They cracked down on many flashcard producers in 2008 and piracy was not as widespread as with the DS and DS Lite

Initially they wanted dsi with two slot 1 and one slot 2. :-( Fortunatelly Gbarunner2 is getting better everyday. But slot 2 was great: ram, rumble, guitar hero, camera, etc... Stupid decision that was not about piracy. Ask "Iwata(RIP) asks"

My parents got me a dsi xl for my 7th birthday, i got a flashcard along with it and i had so much fun with all my games. I recently found my dsi xl again, decided to update it but now my flashcard is blocked... so I'm going to mod it, lol

I did this before watching probably literally for cave story since I already had another dslite with r4 lol, but the small improvements are nice, not to mention my dsi was the one I had first. btw The GB and GBC emulaters work but how do I save with them?

Is it possible to download any DSi Ware games? Because i want to play a fan version of Super Mario Maker on my DSi. I do own the official 3DS SMM but i want to play on my DSi.

Recently picked up a N3DS SNES Edition & softmodded it. Backed up my NDS & 3DS libraries to a 128 SD card & also have Retroarch & TWiLight menu++ installed!

@@TooFurious4Wasn't aware you could inject MD ROMs (but then again there is VC support, so i guess that makes sense). I Prefer Retroarch, personally, all my games are unified & not as cluttered on the home menu (i'm aware it's possible to create folders)

@@chaos3two I tend to inject when possible for GBA and SNES, gives better speed & accuracy I think. Anything else I use retroarch or a standalone emu.

I have so many good memories with my DSi. The only reason I wanted one was because the hinge to my DS lite broke, but I ended up liking the DSi so much more. I loved being able to watch Flipnotes, and having the ability to browse the web lol

Meh... The beefier hardware is nice, but not having that GBA slot absolutely kills it for me. The DS Lite is the way to go for that reason alone.

For the longest time, I had completely neglected he DSi. Recently got one (matte blue, probably bought in November 2012 originally), and now I think it's the best way to play DS and DSi games. The 3DS's screen is problematic, as its resolution, at 1.25x higher, causes DS and DSi games to look soft/blurry. But on the DSi, it is native resolution for both DS and DSi games, so they look perfect. It's no less convenient than the 3DS, just put the games on an SD card.

Agreed, been playing ds games on my 3dsxl via R4 for years just for convenience, even though i still have my ds lite and dsi. Gonna do this to my dsi and use it for ds/dsi ware games going forward. Guess my r4 card will stay in my 3ds to run gb, gbc, gba and other systems ony 3ds. I have some gba and gbc games injected on the 3ds, but its nice to be able to just mass dump alot on an sd card quick and easy. Never at a loss for things to play thanks to modded consoles!

I fixed up some japanese dsi consoles i bought a few months ago. A few of them had broken screens and scratched touch-pad membranes. They have been sitting around and now i can get some use out of them. Thanks for the heads up Modern Vintage Gamer!
