How Nintendo pulled of Majoras Mask is insane. They recycled parts from the first game and built an entire new world in less than a year. Originally they wanted the time limit to be 7 days but needed to reduce it to 3 because of the limits. Master piece of a game especially with how many side missions it has

Even an older mini pc with ddr3 is a better cost effective solution. I mean , sure its worth the money for pi if your someone who just loves the architecture , but honestly its all just a big headache and matter of fact in 2024 , they are still having iso build problems creating a retropie iso for raspberry pi 5 .

"Looney Tunes". That's one technically impressive game. The gameplay is decent, but the graphics and sound are top notch. Smooth multi-layer parallax effects on backgrounds, fast animations, and I could swear the music uses digitized samples for the percussions, a la Super Mario Bros 3, even when I know the GB doesn't support them.

Seeing how this game and doom were made gave a lot of respect for the programmers creativity when working within their constants. They are technically only 2d games but it doesn’t really feel like it ever.

Given that the entire Saturn Library is just under 2TB, this is a hard no. If you can't put the entire library on it and have 100% compatibility, like with the MODE, what's the point? Just save for the MODE.

$90 isn't all that cheap. It's reasonable, but it's really not cheap. I imagine the Cyclone IV accounts for most of it. If it could be simplified to run on a Raspberry Pi Pico, it'd get way cheaper.

No kidding on how hard the transparency was to emulate. I remember trying to play Final Fantasy 4 and Chrono Trigger on ZSNES some time in the late '90s. Transparency never worked, and because I didn't know the emulator had an option to remove layers, I ended up being unable to get past my first visit to the future in Chrono Trigger because of all the fog (I think a later version of ZSNES fixed that issue, but then I got stumped again once I got to Mt. Woe). Meanwhile, on Final Fantasy 4, I couldn't even get past the Mist Cave...... yeah, the game's very first dungeon. Thankfully, both games got a PS1 re-release not long after and I was able to make it through those areas without issue (would've gotten the SNES originals, but even looking for a used copy that was 5 years old at the time seemed to cost $80, not the kind of thing my parents were willing to get me).

Enjoy your channel but I was wondering if you own any 15Khz RGB monitors. I know they don't capture well for KZbin because of the different scan rates than your camera but I was just curious if you enjoy using Amiga's on 15Khz monitors. Personally I would never use one any other way, scan lines are very nostalgic for me as I grew up in thr 70s and 80s. Seeing older computers and consoles and arcade games on modern LCD or HDMI screens just isn't very satisfying. What are your thoughts? Personally I own a Commodore 1984S and a Sony 19" PVM. They are truly glorious. The 1084 is only 12" I think but it serves the lower resolutions excellent. For example playing Super Nintendo (modded for RGB of course) on one of these 15Khz monitors is like playing video games in the clouds.

Compiler problems continued even for their later consoles on their later games (800MB was a lot in 2004). The switch being well know Nvidia hardware, they quickly got lto optimizations.

That's why it's hypocritical to think exclusives matter anymore unless the hardware is unique enough for a game to be adapted on. A good example is the nintendo switch. It's games are designed around it while 3rd party have forgotten what it takes to alter a game for the hardware artistically rather then adjust a few sliders and remove elements and give you a lesser experience instead of a unique one.

Personal opinion: You can thank Microsoft for the direction gaming took, as a whole. Their initial introduction to consoles of course concided off the back of Sega leaving the market and MS snagged some exclusives from Sega, Tecmo etc to try and get their foot in Japan's door, but of course, they were having none of it 😅 But on their next attempt, they would time it to perfection - putting the still very capable OG Xbox out to pasture ahead of time and getting the jump on Sony & Nintendo with the 360. Which, in short; is a western console, owned by the west and with a library of titles of predominantly western developed games all coupled with MS' ferocious knowhow and vision concerning online gaming, DLC with no physicsl outlay, subscriptions, etc. And Sony struggled to meet this and in doing so (and continuing to do so) basically aped the 360 and has had to become an Xbox-like moving forward which - to the frustration of some, Nintendo have simply refused to follow suit. Compared to the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, Japanese flagship titles are now few and far between and - although it's always a discussion point - it was the Japanese and their visions and creativity which resurrected gaming from the grip of the west in the 80s and made it as incredible as it was (inc. Konami, Namco, Square, Capcom and so on). It's no accident many people hold the Souls and Elden Ring titles in such high regard. Obviously tastes and interests (and gamer age/exposure) vary but, on the whole, I agree with MVG with respect to the last great gaming gen was the 5th: DC, GC, PS2 & Xbox 👍

Yesterday Microsoft closed 4 studios, one of which was Arcane which made Redfall. Granted it's not a good game, but they were working on a patch to remove the online DRM that was due out this month. Microsoft couldn't even let them finish that. Meaning when they decide to pull the servers, the game will be fully dead. This company has never cared about preservation and never will.

The DS was THE console of my childhood; I carried mine practically everywhere, so I could play primarily Pokémon games (and a couple others, like Drawn to Life, Bakugan Battle Brawlers). Man, I loved this lil' handheld, and even now it's nostalgic. Doesn't help that the DS was really the last console to feature a lot of experimental games, such as the aforementioned Drawn to Life, Pokémon Ranger, Pokémon Conquest (didn't end up gelling with me, this one, unfortunately), ŌkamiDen, and others; once the 3DS arrived, a lot of this experimentation faded away, never to return.

So last December 2023 on my birthday 30 years old, I thought I would purchase me a N64 for $100 got about handful of free n64 games Zelda Mario banjo Glover and Donkey Kong wise, from a younger retro game selling guy at the flea market helping out his business and my mom and sister were so proud of me buying a N64 after all these years, And I walked around the flea market to look at other things an other older retro guy that knows me well, saw me carrying a bag and said hey it's your birthday what did you get are you selling it, oh you bought a N64 nice and checked it out looks very good and saw my donkey Kong 64 and majoras mask 64 looked at my starter pack original and was shocked and said oh did the other game guy told you about the red expansion pak and said if I tried to play Majora's Mask or donkey Kong with the Starter pack it would be a black screen and say please insert expansion pak would be very useless! Until I found that time I so never knew that, and said that these red expansion N64 packs are hard to find and sell and very expensive but since I spent a good bit he decided to give me a free red N64 expansion pak and later I would have to find give him any other n64 game from any other game store I visit sometimes and I founded another n64 authentic game for him in returning for the free red n64 expansion pak! And asked me for my regular n64 Starter pack cause the red expansion pak reads games better! Just wow I was just very lucky there! Wonder if there's a video on here someone trying to play Majora's Mask and Donkey Kong 64 with the regular N64 jump starter pack?

Great point. It's always been the case that games were best on the system they were made for. Which is why arcade games NEVER were very good on any home system. Wasn't until Dreamcast that arcade games and consoles were 1 to 1 as the Dreamcast had the identical same hardware that Sega arcade games had. Since then home console and computers have detroyed arcade games. But back in the day arcade games were king. It was frustrating for something like 20 years never getting a home port that was as good as the arcade. I know you're not talking about arcade games but the same thing applies. I grew up with IBM PC. My friends had Apple IIs and C64s. Then some of my other friends got an Atari ST and Dungeon Master made me miserable not being able to play on IBM PC. Anyways, it's a very frustrating reality that we all had to go through. I always wanted an Amiga after a saw a demo at an electronics store. It seems to be the best of all the PCs at the time but i'm not sure what games were best on Amiga.

The bad thermals was a key reason why Apple drop the Power P, but not hr only one. IBM management were not into grow but financial engineering and did not want to invest in PowerPC enough to compete. Also Intel had a he node advantage and were willing to work with Apple. It was a fantastic run with Apple, Intel and ATU revolutionizing the Laptop form facto, until it was no longer possible. Then ARM, Apple and TSMC toke over

I don't have any real evidence, but I assume the reason why Rare was great at piracy protection on Nintendo consoles was because the Stamper Brothers experienced unfiltered piracy on ZX Spectrum during their Ultimate days, and this was them bringing that prior experience over to the cartridges world.
