Impossible porting? Let's be honest, many were never impossible. One of the main reasons was always money. The modules couldn't be expensive, memory was expensive, the risk was too great. So the ports had to be as tiny as possible. But technically speaking, it was never impossible in terms of the technical capabilities of the target platform. Of course, there were always restrictions on certain features, so that a 1:1 port was not possible. But with subtle adjustments, the core of the game was always possible. especially when it comes to the more modern platforms. For example the Doom 3 port to XBOX. Don't forget that the Original early Doom 3 Showcase PC use a GF3 and P3 similar oft the XBOX Performance.

Sadly in the day all I was using my PS2 for was DVD's. Didn't have the budget to get the games. I still play my DVD's on PS2 most of the time because it just looks better than how most new players handle the media.

In my professional opinion, older video games or movies were usually better because of their limitations and forced the developers to think. Nowadays games and movies have absolutely NO limits, and people started to get lazier with them. Either that, or they were too focused on things *looking* good than actually *being* good. That's not to say new games and movies are bad, heck, Pikmin 4 is already one of my favorite games, like, ever, (that also doesn't mean certain games or movies are *good* just because they're old) but technology advancing to the point where you can do anything you want was both a blessing and a curse for that reason. On top of that, these days people have REALLY high standards, and now there are certain people who are just NEVER satisfied with anything you give them. You know, I wonder what certain games can be like if the developers intentionally gave themselves limitations, like "we're going to develop this game without using this feature and see what happens!" An interesting thought...

The first step is to refrain from playing games from companies that do this pulling the rug from under us... but no one wants to stop buying and playing games... however, a lack of revenue would change attitudes real fast. Alternatively, buy your games primarily from companies that are reasonable and support the customer before you buy any others. Sure the games are often from smaller developers and not the most technically advanced, but it is necessary to make the good guys earn some of the money we would normally spend. Wont change the landscape right now, but at least we would be able to show them that their lawyer team can't pry money from our pockets, only allowing preservation can... long term play, but that is what it takes to change things.

20 years ago, if you were running ANY emulator, for ANY system, you were basically "a hacker" and was mostly for people that either couldn't afford a vintage hardware system, or wanted a better game experience with better hardware than the original system

Am trying hard to imagine a scenario where a virus would have hit me, an average A1200 user: I didn't have a hard disk, my floppy disks had write protection notch set... I am so glad this missed me. And yeah, over the 42 years I have been computing, I have had my fair share of destructive viruses, not being condescending.

The N64 power is about 100 megaflops. The PS5 is 100,000 times more powerful. However, Nintendo makes good games. I was a video game programmer at the time. I worked on the SNES, PS-1 and Gameboy Color.

I worked at rare on KI gold among other things. The original hardware design was a bit of a mystery to everyone I think as games were being made there without final hardware, the lack of a cd drive worked for it, as much as it worked against. All in all, its hard to knock nintendo for what they give us with the N64, I would feel really disloyal if I ever ripped on that machine!

I always thought GTA5 running on the 360 would top a list like this. Hardware from like 2003/2004 and they got this game to run on it, a game which would serve as a benchmark staple for PC gaming all through the 2010s.

Forza Horizon 2 and Halo 5 are the only 'notable' games that are stuck on Xbox's ecosystem. They are the only games that have kept me from dumping the platform entirely. (Well except co-op. Series S consoles are so cheap I have 2 just for playing co-op with my wife)

@ModernVintageGamer the Morrowind music in the background around 7:19 is a good touch. Morrowind was such an influential title on the Xbox. I'm learning about how well it performed commercially on the Xbox, and the accolades it received for that. Do you think it'd be possible to patch the XBE somehow to get MWSE (Morrowind Script Extender) to work with it? The Xbox is just a modified NT kernel, yeah? What blockers would be in the way of increased Morrowind mod support? I think Morrowind, along with Halo 2 with Insignia, are a boon to the Xbox homebrew and modding community. Sure, you can just play Morrowind on PC, but why not challenge yourself an play with that extra thick fog and shorter view distance at 30 FPS?

You do not need a hacked console for Dreamcast. Use the Ethernet adapter and I believe you ssh in and can rip contents just need I believe to compress audio to get it to red book cd and then the regular console will play it. I used to do it has been many many years though.

I have no idea what most of this tech jargon means but it sounds like back when not everything was so easily scaled across any hardware like today so much work had to be put into making things work on drastically different and often inferior hardware. Gotta love it.

Welp. Bad for them [Nintendo]. They can't see the problem yet. It's gonna cost them even more than this switch piracy/preservation has ever been. But they're big chunky monky money bags that don't see any good in what does not being them goody dollars. I don't care about switch emulation for half a year now. Because I moved on. I have great games to play elsewhere. But it doesn't mean the situation isn't complete garbage

This comment section is unhinged entitlement by a bunch of freeloading 'hackers'. The game was a mess on launch. It was updated to fix the rain a while later. Then the classic lighting update dropped and suddenly everyone was playing it enough to feel they have an entitled say. Look. You knew what you bought after launch. Tough. I have 130 hours on GTA III from the collection, 73 on San Andreas and 17 in Vice City (nothing personal I just got lazy). I definitely got my $30 worth. I've done modding. I've done game programming and I'm no bootlicker but half of you need to grow up. As for MVG. Big fan but you have a heavy bias towards leaning into the chaos of releases for views. Buddy you know your stuff but leave the journalism to the unbiased. If you hate it. You aren't going to be kind and performance mode is cute and all but if you want frames. Use a PC you easily have sitting. Right there. God, you all are some arrogant folk. You probably also subscribe to the 'loneliness epidemic' and also throw monkey turds at female protagonists because "my feelings...". Yikes.

Someone had just given me a saturn with virtua cop 1and 2 and the lightgun (but no scart cable 🤦♂️). I've never played one at all as after a sabbatical from gaming in the early 90s (I picked up a d immersed myself in all that brought intil eventually picking up a ps1 fairly late, then dreamcast then xbox and gamecube plus delving back into my megadrive collecting and being dismayed at the prices😅. I think this could be more than a great intro into otherwise uncharted territory for me! It's a shame it seems like a bit of a dice roll but hey ho. Nice one❤

I got my Amiga 500 in 1988. It came with Test Drive, Backlash and Return to Atlantis. Return to Atlantis needed a blank floppy disk to write save data to so I bought one (for £2.50!) from my local computer shop and it came up with a 'not a dos disk' error. I tried three other disks and they all did the same. The shop investigated and found that the blanks were all infected with the SCA virus. Luckily the original disks all had their write protect on so they were OK.

So this is not actually using a 3D rendering engine, but rather precalculated 2D vector graphics that mimic flat shaded 3D polygons... right? Such a clever idea!
