Austin, For your display cases just use the Gretsch style strap-locks, they would be screwed down tight and not moving at all.
@haggismcmutton47027 ай бұрын
Former Gretsch owner here. Those things would come loose all the time. I would have to tighten them between every song when playing live. Also, he'd have to drill a new hole in the guitar to accommodate those.
@hkguitar19847 ай бұрын
@@haggismcmutton4702 Good to know, and thank you for chiming in. Yeah, maybe some kind of strap-lock mechanism would be better. I do like the idea of displaying the guitar without any contact on the finish.

Strings should ALWAYS be tuned down to slack, particularly on Gibson guitars, to help take up to a hundred or so pounds of stress off the neck and headstock. That can make ALL the difference between the guitar arriving undamaged and arriving with a broken neck.
@halcooper30707 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's why the manufacturers slack off the strings... oh wait, they don't.
@Turboy657 ай бұрын
@@halcooper3070 They should. It'd be smart, but Gibson rarely makes SMART decisions lately. It's simple logic. Slack the strings, take over a hundred pounds of tension off the headstock, give it more tolerance for absorbing a shock. Simple physics.
@donbishop69947 ай бұрын
A volute would be nice. I don't hear of hardly any guitars with a volute catching a headstock break like that.
@davidburke21327 ай бұрын
@@Turboy65except when you think that the truss rod is set to apply an equal and opposition torsion the opposite way, so if you stacked the strings off you’ve taken a neck from being in a state of balance of forces to all of a sudden having no pull from the strings and the same significant torsion applied from the truss rod. You’ve oversimplified the scenario and the physics that are going on I’m afraid. You absolutely shouldn’t take the strings to slack before you ship. Some people suggest a little loosening off but I’ve never heard anyone talk about taking the strings to slack, for exactly the reason I’ve explained. If you really want to remove all force on the neck you’d have to slacken the strings AND loosen off the truss rod so it’s not applying any force to the neck either, and nobody does that because it would result in the guitar needing to be completely set up again upon arrival.

I’ve bought 6 Solar guitars from Solar since 2020 lockdowns. I currently have 5. They were made in Indonesia shipped to Solars spanish warehouse then shipped down here to New Zealand in either spains winter and our summer or vice versa. Strings were not slacked, all arrived perfectly fine and pretty much in tune, esp the E1.6 FBB which is evertune equipped.

Not sure if they’ve changed it up, but I visited the Experience Music Project in Seattle about 15 years ago. They had really cool displays, a few guitars amps and pedals with large format photos of the musician playing. They also had a cool interactive box that let you remove the effects from a few Hendrix songs (and they actually had the pedals in the box because I saw it being repaired!

Hi Austin, have you ever seen a break in a 1970s Gibson with the three piece maple neck and the chunky volute? It seems when Gibson tried to address the problem in their weak headstocks, people didn't like it. Which is a shame as they're objectively a better engineered solution. I prefer a shallower break angle, a scarf joint and heel truss rod access for the ultimate insurance policy.
