Personally, I'd swap the engines, then you can rework it to your standard (even though it is not a carb engine).

Great find! Just a few details that I want to share as a Saabfan: the colour Pine Green is rather rare. The interior is not original but the colour is the same as the original interior was. The "chrome" around the windows was standard for those years and became black around 1987. The "GL" was an indication for a basic version of the 900 with just one carburetor ("GLs had two carburetors). From about 1987 the Zenith Stromberg was replaced by a Pierburg, which is more difficult to find parts for. It's easier to find new parts for the Stromberg. The heated seats were standard in that time. Good luck with the project!

I would be swapping the engines over, and the injection system, The green Saab is stripped so even changing the wiring loom would be a straight forward proposition, the later 16 valve injected engine will have more torque and better on fuel consumption, You have the means and tools to make the green car an outstanding job and I believe that the bumpers and trim are interchangeable. But I am watching your progress

This is why I love this channel, he recognized he was in over his head, and stayed reasonable and found pretty much the perfect solution. New shell with way less rust, and paperwork, fixing the two biggest issues of the other one, while still making the other one useful since it has a good engine and interior to use in the clean shell. Well done !

Very interesting, Memphis. Just to the point where you talk about the carb. That dashpot looks more Stromberg than Zenith. Our 81 Volvo 240DL estate had the 2.1 litre Red Block with a single sided draught carburetor. They are very finicky and particular about the fluid in the dash pot that controls the throttle damper. Since these side draught carbs do not have an accelerator pump, the plunger on the dash pot serves to slow the opening of the throttle plate so you don't starve the car of gas when you suddenly give it more throttle. Out 81 used exactly 4.5cc of Type F transmission fluid. Twice a year, at the semiannual service, I would suck the old fluid out as completely as possible, then use the syringe to put the exact correct amount in. Even at -40 without being plugged in old Guinevere started every time. This is going to be such a lovely car when you are done. The colours are perfect together. Sad that the engine did not run today, but keep smiling. You will get there and have a gorgeous car when done. Heated seats were common amongst cars of a certain price and prestige level. Our base model 81 Volvo had a heated driver's seat only. It was automatic. My current Volvo, Arthur the 1990 Volvo 240 Estate that Ma bought to celebrate her 60th birthday, came standard with dual front seat heaters. Those Saab seats look very nice indeed. Guess you may need to find new covers. I know that here in North America kits to redo the foam and upholstery are easily obtained.

Had a Saab 900i -86 5 door, 5 speed for 10 years. Remembers a problem with the valve for the heating core leaking that was a common fault often mistaken for the core itself. There was back then a replacement valve to buy accessible underneath the dashboard that I changed myself after much acrobatic.

the seats in the green saab are going to clean up really well. don't worry about the tear in the rear seat, the best thing about 80's cars, is that you can literally fix it with a sewn in patch and it won't look out of place.

I love that green colour, especially with that tan interior. The front seats look to be in great condition, heated too! An all round better proposition than the grey one with impressive documented history and you say it was at a good price too. Win, win, no brainer! Hope you put Aero wheels on it like in the photo! Someone below has suggested swapping the engines over, that way you'd get the injection system, extra valves and extra power and possibly better economy and reliability to boot. Looking forward to progress on this one! Keep up the good work Memphis.😎👍
