Another Pearl in Flames: Japanese Invasion of the Philippines 1941 - Part 2

Although largely overshadowed by the catastrophe of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attack on the United States Air Force bases in Iba and Clark Field in the Philippines on the same day was an equally catastrophic event that rounds out the tragedy of a day that will live in infamy.

brereton didn't order planes to take off for the 08:30-45 scramble; that was done by Maj. Gibbs, 30th squadron commander & the 24th Pursuit Group commander. there was no "disrupted radio transmissions" 17th PS scrambled from Clark, c.12:10, ordered to cover Manila. there were no squadrons at Nielson. 21st PS scrambled from Nichols, about a half hour earlier, to cover Clark, but was quickly diverted to Manila Bay, & 3rd PS scrambled from, & to cover, Iba, it to quickly being diverted to Manila. 20th PS, spread out along an edge of Clark, sat at cockpit alert, awaiting the scramble order that never came. the bombers were, likewise, spread along an edge of Clark, a few in revetments, newly engineer built; others in makeshift revetments constructed of dirt filled 55g drums. none lined up wing tip to wing tip. as the groups had been detected, then followed by radar & observers for over an hour. the issue was piss poor fighter direction, not surprise.

The Japanese took six months to control the Philippines and this affected the battles of Coral Sea and Midway.
