One last footnote about that Moderni-Subaru Flat 12 engine; Swedish manufacturer Koenigsegg bought the engines to use in their CC supercar but they found it was so lacking in potential that they used a heavily upgraded Ford-derived V8 instead.

And now Koenigsegg is completely re-engineering every part of ICE drivetrains, did you see their new gearbox info?! I feel like if he took his talents for thinking outside and over the box, he could be successful in F1....well maybe not anymore...but from 1950-2000 I bet he'd have done well.
@NitrousFox Жыл бұрын
The engine wasn’t lacking potential, Koenigsegg lacked resources. The engine was reworked, bored out, and they were anticipating over 1000hp at 9,000rpm with turbochargers. I realize everyone has to start somewhere but not looking back now that he’s come up is a severe missed opportunity

Fun fact: Frederic Dhainhaut later found himself in another Italian team in 1992. The shoebox bois. Andrea Moda. So in a way Dhainhaut returned to Coloni...-ish. EVEN MORE FUN FACT: That Motori Moderni company was started by Carlo Chiti. The same Carlo Chiti who worked on Phil Hill's Ferrari 156. And later on in 1999 a certain Swede named Christian bought the blueprint for that flat-12 engine for his car. But apparently things didn't work that well and his first production car used Ford Modular V8 with supercharger. The Koenigsegg CC8S.

I’ve been watching CART from 1984 (first full season I could find) onwards and just got past Moreno’s first-since-F3000 win at Cleveland 2000, which I remember watching live. A remarkable journeyman career he put together and I’m here to reward any Moreno-adjacent story with clicks.
@julianbailey27492 жыл бұрын
For the original Geoff Crammond Grand Prix I used to always drive as Coloni because then I was driving against the full grid of 'proper' F1 teams. The car to drive was the same, whichever team you were in.

Another oddity was the teams late 1991 driver (Naoki Hattori) funded part of his pay-driver sponsorship via fan-paid signatures on the sidepod. Like Crowdfunding several decades early.
@Athrun822 жыл бұрын
Also those fans that signed the pod had the chance of winning a ticket to the F1 race. As the Japan race was always sold out this was a very nice incentive.

"A French TV Channel" That made me realise, the late 80s? The dates added up. Was it La Cinq? Why yes it was. The channel that bought the French rights to F1 for a skip load of cash, but also happened to be part owned by Silvio Berlusconi, and collapsed in a mountain of debt. Yeah, that was a reliable money source for teams... It's Moreno time!
@bundesautobahn72 жыл бұрын
Reminds me of Tele 5 in Germany, which was also a Berlusconi venture. That channel replaced Musicbox in 1988, and then were replaced by Deutsches Sport-Fernsehen (DSF) in 1993. Today's Tele 5 is only related to the original Tele 5 in name and part of the ownership only (until 2019 at least). I believe DSF held also some F1 TV rights in the 1990s, or at least those races were broadcast over the shortlived DF1 digital service that was integrated into Premiere (now Sky Deutschland).

Also, I can't think of a race that seems to have featured more chaotic races AND beyond nutty qualifying drives from teams that had no reason to qualify then Monaco. As cramped as that track is and as much of a dull experience it can be on race day, You have to admit: Its not short on crazy stories.

Roberto Moreno got quite a cult following (of sorts) in Australia and New Zealand in the early 80s racing Formula Pacific cars. He won the Australian Grand Prix in 1981, 1983 and 1984 as well the 1982 New Zealand Grand Prix, all driving Ford-Cosworth BDA powered Ralt RT4's. The only AGP he didn't win in that era was 1982 when he finished 3rd behind French duo Alain Prost (winner) and Jacques Laffite. Prost's win in 1982 was history itself. With his subsequent AGP win in 1986 in Adelaide he became (and still is) the only driver to win the Australian Grand Prix in both Aussie domestic and World Championship formats.

While Roberto Moreno was rubbish in F1, his career in Indycar/CART was much better with 2 wins & even a 3rd place points finish in 2000. He even wanted to do a few NASCAR Cup Series races in 2000 & 2001 which would have made him the first Brazilian to race in that series but Patrick Racing his team in CART said no. Christian Fittipladi eventually became the first Brazilian to race in NASCAR in 2003 in a brief stint in the famous #43 for Petty Enterprises.

Of all those slow Italian teams (besides Minardi - that was at least run by passionate petrolheads), Coloni should have been the best given their experience in the lower classes. It's a shame so many of those teams seemed to be money laundering exercises back then. But then again, the mafia... 🤷🏻♀️
