I watched this movie a few weeks ago and can’t stop thinking about it. The ending was just so beautiful and perfect, when was the last time a movie earned such a moment of cathartic joy?

I have lived this After college when I started working I realised that the job scene is not my thing So I started drinking to cope, it gave me immense pleasure, confidence and escape from all my problems rest you know as you have seen the movie After multiple attempts and relapses, I am 17 days sober again 🤞🏼

The ending is so striking because it is at once jubilant and upbeat but at the same time depressingly bleak. The protagonist gives in to the excesses of the experiment - his life has been irrevocably changed, but given his depressive state before he started drinking, is it for the better? It isn't; it's just a different kind of bad.
@forzafck15883 жыл бұрын
The ending isnt about the drinking, and him going down a dark path... 🤦♂️ Its about rediscovering the joy of life, that we had as kids, which is lost in all the shit we go through in our adult lives. Its not a "deep dark ending" that points out alcohol is bad. Too much is bad (of course), but in Danish culture its not the devil every American sees. The original messages of the movie before Vinterberg's daughter died was a tribute to alcohol, but hes vision changed when she died and it became a tribute to life it self.

the ending shows that martin chooses to be free and that he's unwilling to return to his old life. he had been trying to be a good husband and it didn't work out. he had been unhappy for a long time with his wifes constant abscence and she even cheated on him. at the end, when he's texting her that his deceased friend tommy "needs him now", she's kinda selfish again and tells him that she needs him too. his drinking and dancing (instead of meeting her) can be understood as something like "bros before hoes". as paradoxical it may sound, this mindset could lead to a better realationship between him and his wife, and therefore it's kind of a happy ending.

@@forzafck1588 i couldn't disagree more. The ending shows that he once again chooses alcohol over his family. The "joy of life" ks superficial and ks only there because he's drunk.
@FilipeG962 жыл бұрын
@@TheMaximumblack Is that what was actually said when they were texting? From what I remember it was something like "I think tommy is rooting for us" and she replied "Me too"

@@forzafck1588 It can be both at the same time, which makes it alot more interesting imo. The notion of the inherent dialectic nature of joy/pleasure (and also of anguish/pain). The movie shows there's always a flip side to everything, ehich needs balance. If you get into any extreme, then it might become problematic. Either way, it communicates a need which needs to be fulfilled in order to strike said balance (in this case, balance between the joyous nature of younghood and the stable necessities of adulthood, broadly speaking)

ENDING EXPLAINED: in the end, despite getting a second chance at life with his wife, he chooses/celebrates, once again with alcohol, he decides to quite literally shower himself in the substance, and inevitably dives into the ocean that Tommy died in. Foreshadowing his ultimate end despite having every opportunity given to avoid it. A second chance with his family, A career high! Nothing was enough to pull him away.

One of the best endings of all time. Most endings never payoff and this one paid off so royally. My interpretation is that he lept to his death at the end, completely letting go of suffering and accepting his relief, his choices, his life and death.

Vinterberg said that he was thinking of either having this Mikkelsen dance scene in the middle or at the end of the movie. So I believe it's just a celebration of life and not Mads who leap to his death.

I don't understand why people call the ending to this movie a happy ending! I think the ending was a sad one . Bcz he lost his family due to his excessive drinking and when he gets another chance of getting his wife back (when he gets her message on his phone) he decides to continue celebrating with his students anf fellow teachers/friends and drinking all kinds of alcohol. What that means is he's still and will continue to be an addict. And even if he gets his wife back , i don't think it'll be for long.
