What a great find. I drove an ‘83 version with the same Thomas/International configuration many years ago. Mine had air brakes and air door but otherwise, the same. The lighted switch on the left panel should be connected to a strobe light. The two switches next to the door control should be part of the warning light system. Also, that lever on the panel beside your left knee is part of the warning lights too. When you turned it, I could hear that familiar flasher motor and saw the red pilot light start blinking. Hopefully this unit will go to a restoration buff as the engine (9.0 liter) and the rest of the bus appears to be in real good shape.

I love old Thomases, the one thing about the old ones is that until about 2005ish, the body style stayed exactly the same, with only the Chassis changing. They used to use International, until International got their own bus company (IC) and now they use Freightliner. Sadly they retired this body style, and replaced it with the C2, which I kind of like better since there is more head room, but the old style is iconic.

Glad to hear that this bus is up for sale. It's in perfectly good condition. The interior of the bus is a little worn out, but nothing a little TLC couldn't cure. The engine sounds good. Given that bit of info, I have no idea why this bus would be sent to the scrapyard. This bus still has some life left and I hope they find a good home for it.
9:04 that's what I was waiting for!! The sound of my childhood lol The sound of the 9L accelerating is ingrained in me straight from kindergarten, especially with an automatic. (Our district had all autos). Little did I know I'd be all about V-8 engines and sounds later in life! This (and the BttF car sounds) might be a big part of it!

Why not restore them and put them back on the road to save taxpayers money. Or sell them to small towns for their schools.
@wildcoyote346 жыл бұрын
actually it's kinda strange but there are laws concerning aging school buses , they are retired after so many years or so many miles,, I am from a small town in Iowa and the school buses get replaced after 10 years or so another interesting note when nearly all city school buses are automatic transmission vehicles ,, all of the large buses owned by my local school except the pusher buses have a manual transmission
@emeyer69636 жыл бұрын
That would be too smart!May as well waste the taxpayers money.My district on Long Island was forced to replace there aged fleet of International Loadstars back in late 80s because of law requiring seatbelts and headlights on at all times.Would of been too much to retrofit 15-25 year old vehicles so they went to a fleet of Diesel internationals that have been replaced 3 times since then
@wildcoyote346 жыл бұрын
my local community doesn't have seat belts on the buses except tor the front few rows , some have 3 point seat belts ,, but they had LAP belts back when i was in school too that was over 25 years ago ,,,I still remember clear back in the early 80s when they changed from the low back seats to the taller padded crash seats they have now ,,they also at the end of the 80s and early 90s gradually replaced all of the gasoline/LP powered buses with diesel buses partly because engines lasted a LOT longer I remember once when i was a senior in high school talking to one of the bus mechanics because i was taking auto shop and got to help in the bus garage ,, he told me that some of the buses by the time they got replaced after 10 or 12 years had gone through 3 or 4 engines ,,but I also should mention that the part of Iowa i live in the southwestern area has a lot of hills ,and stop and go driving is very unforgiving to a very heavy vehicle especially one with a sub 6 liter V8 gas engine ,,gasoline engines even the big heavy industrial ones don't last as long as the diesel engines they have now ,,and one thing big block gas engines hate doing is revving very high ,and with a 28,000 pound vehicle every time you start off from a stop you have to rev the engine to max power before shifting gears age and mileage are the 2 biggest factors in school bus replacement once they get to a certain point they become much more expensive to maintain and are more likely to break down as well
@emeyer69636 жыл бұрын
Seat belts became a requirement in late 80s here in NY.They used Loadstars from 62 to 77 in my district.All 4 speed manuals and quite a few of them didn't even have power steering.When they got replaced by the diesel S series similar to what Jay is showing they all were Automatics.Don't know if gas engines were even offered for them in late 80's.
@wildcoyote346 жыл бұрын
they never had internationals here where i live , I remember very well they were nearly all GMC/Chevrolet buses they had a 5+2 transmission like most large grain trucks ,, 5 speed manual with a 2 speed axle the seatbelt laws for buses vary from state to state ,,, I don't know much about international trucks/ buses but i do know international never used any engines but their own in any vehicle they produced ,,and the old IH trucks had gas engines up till the late 60s/early 70s

@michaelchan89156 жыл бұрын
Very interesting vehicle. If it is in fact an '85 model year, it definitely has the larger engine option judging by the valve covers. I know for sure that is definitely NOT the 6.9L IDI Navistar engine that was used not only in Navistar trucks of the era but also Ford's F-250 and F-350 along with their E-Series vans of that vintage. That looks like a 9.0L V8 if I had to guess. I saw you chuckling at the sound the brake pedal was making as you depressed it with the engine off. This is because it obviously has hydraulic brakes (as opposed to air brakes) with a hydroboost assist. On trucks that big, the law mandates up to a certain number of assisted brake applications available with the engine not running (I'm guessing so that if the engine were to suddenly die while driving, the vehicle operator would be able to bring it safely to stop without too much effort). In a conventional hyrdroboost system, the power steering pump supplies fluid to provide assist for both the steering and the brakes. On trucks of this size however, there is also an accumulator and electric motor that blocks off both the power steering fluid inlet and outlet ports, and recirculates the leftover fluid within, to provide assist when the engine is shut off. This vehicle would be an excellent candidate to convert to a motorhome.PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, get another old mid 70s era International Loadstar truck with a 345 V8 gas engine and manual transmission in. I want to hear one run!!!

Was that the 6.9 that Ford also used as the diesel option in pickups for years?

If it ends up being scrapped, you should demo a diesel runaway on it before it gets shredded 😁

Great Bay a diesel runaway is where a diesel engine finds a fuel source other than diesel fuel...(e.g. engine oil). About the only thing you can do is let the engine destroy itself at a really high RPM. Do a KZbin search on diesel runaway!

That will make a nice motor home conversion Only has 200,000 miles. Still has much life yet
@arthureverett82205 жыл бұрын
Looks like maybe poor maintenance caused it to go for scrap. Many trucks have original engines that have over a million miles on them being well maintained with scheduled oil changes and adding Motorkote additive
