I cannot believe it! Right after I told you that I rarely finish a sketchbook, here is my third one! They are like buses- none for ages and then three at once!

Yesssss! I’m so with you on “creating pretty pictures that don’t have meaning” 👍👍 ❤️❤️ I think we need MORE people painting pretty pictures with no meaning! Annnnd…. Maybe the meaning is simply that I make a conscious choice to see the beauty around me, especially when everything is NOT pretty; and that I choose to create and express myself from place of joy and serenity. A favorite quote I’ve collected from a book I've recently read is “My happiness is my defiance. My joy is my dissent.” Yes please: is love to see the scrubby gouache background technique you mentioned. Thank you for sharing your wonderful sketchbooks!

I was crushed when my teacher said that because I was creating my art from somewhere inside and then I was faced with the reality (his reality) that they were somehow 'wrong'. Great quote too; covers it all beautifully. I shall arrange a scrubby gouache video at some point soon.

Just stumbled across your channel this arvo. I love seeing other people's art whether it's through a sketchbook, framed, digital art, etc... Your art is amazing, such skill. I've noticed several art youtubers say their teacher told them they won't amount to anything with their art. Which is just a cruel thing to say to someone young. A teacher is meant to help a student succeed to the best of their ability in whatever area. Not to bring a student down. I love drawing most art styles... However, my favourite has always been abstract, even when abstract wasn't really a thing. As a little kid, just doing all different colourful patterns that don't make sense. I loved it because of the vibrant colours. I really just love seeing colour, specifically bright colours. Not every art piece needs to make sense and I'm glad artists are more open to that these days.

Thank you so much- I am so pleased that you found me. I am relatively new (2024 new year`s resolution of kinds was to develop my YT channel properly. Funny isn't it and you are spot on about teachers. This teacher was later overheard telling people that he taught me! He forgot that if you live in a small town, you have to be careful to whom you say things! Art may be one of the most personal things that humans can achieve and my long time on the planet has told me that there will always be one person to like it and one, not so much. D xx

Loved all your artwork. The collages are so interesting. I love using soft pastels too, but have moved away from using them because of the dust and pigment transfer. What do you recommend to use over the soft pastels?

Thank you! I am loving the collages (pretty new to them after putting up resistance for years!). I find that soft pastels are okay if you follow a few guidelines and a fixative is really handy. Any fixative for soft pastels is great. Sennelier is the one that is always readily available here in Europe. D xx

@@debbievongrabler-crozier2646 Thank you for responding. I have Krylon workable fixative, but hate the smell. I used to use a low odor brand, but that didn't mean it was less toxic, it just meant you couldn't smell it as much. I keep hoping to find a solution that doesn't require spraying a toxic chemical into the air around me. I may go back to creating my pastel still lives if I could find a nontoxic solution for the workable fixative. Those Mungyo Gallery handmade soft pastels looks very very interesting. I have a small set of old Grumbacher half sticks that are my favorite. Isn't it wonderful how good artists materials never spoil? My soft pastels are about 40 years old now and still putting down beautiful color.

Do you use a sealer on your lovely works? Just wondering because you say you are using soft pastels with other mediums on top. New to your channel and LOVE your work!

Thank you! I use a few different sorts but broadly speaking, they all come under the heading of 'Mixed Media Paper' and the important thing is to make sure that they are suitable for wet media as well as dry. D xx

What do you use to film and how do you use your camera handsfree

I have an iPhone 14 Pro and a pretty cheap and ordinary cantilever camera arm from Amazon. It works really well actually proving that you do not need to spend huge amounts. Hope that helps! Deb xx

What glaze do you put on top of your collage? It looks shiny, which makes me think you painted something on to protect it. Thanks!

Actually it is not glazed- although I see what you mean. Some of it is because I am using a few papers that are scraps left from my card making and they have a glaze on them. It is a Ranger Tim Holtz one called Resist Spray. I would not recommend it for art though because it prevents adding further layers. Some of the shine is just the coloured pencil on a smooth paper. Your sketchbook is very nice. Also your voice is very pleasant. However, in my opinion you should try to emphasize patreon a little less. The people who are willing to go there and can afford it, will do it if you point it out 1-3 times. I found it a bit annoying after a while. Sorry, I don't want to make you angry, it is just my opinion.
