I think that says a lot about your management practices and care for your animals that you can get down and pet her with those newborn piglets right there. great video man, looking forward to the next.

Videos like this are insanely helpful for those of us considering animals as total beginners. I want to start with feeder pigs when we get on our land, and all of your honesty has just confirmed that decision. Do you sell feeder pigs? How would one get in touch with you to get some from you when the time was right?

We don't castrate. It was nerve wracking to farrow and raise 33 (in the first batch) boars out as feeders without castrating them -mainly because of the scare of taint. But I absorbed everything that Walter Jeffries put out - (when his site was working) about not castrating. We did keep them about 600' from a group of breeding age gilts and never had an issue with escapes. Genetics, constant rotation and biochar have to be why have never had an issue with boar taint. Our sows are old stock registered berkshire. We have 2 boars for 19 sows. 1 registered berk and 1 duroc/berk cross.

I bet it was nerve wracking. Coming from cattle operations my whole life, castration never was an issue for me. Of course, there’s an animal welfare argument that people make about castration as well. Where are you located?

Do you grow comfrey in the US? I know a few people here in the uk that grow it as forage for various livestock and pets on small farms. I use it to make plant food for my veg and seems to be useful for everything given how nutritious and protein rich it is. Love your honest vids about farming struggles, compromises and solutions 🙂

Yes I do! But I don’t do much with it. It’s a bit of hassle on a larger scale. Usually the cattle graze it but the pigs are in that area occasionally.

great video! I sure appreciate my kune kune... very low maintenance.... great mothering instincts as well.

Glad you enjoyed it! Im really glad to hear that you like your kune kune. I’m sure it sounds like I talk bad about them a lot, but there’s so much attention given to them and mangas particularly. I probably over state their problems, but so many people understate them. How do you market your kunes?

I have berkshires that i raise on pasture, my sows are great moms but, they are devil possessed protective for the first 48 hours after having piglets.

foe how cycles you can keep breading sow ? how do you know when it is your time to go with other pigs ?
@DowdleFamilyFarms4 күн бұрын
So far, I haven’t culled sows because of age and my oldest ones have produced 7-8 litters now, so they are 4-5 years old.
