Another Stormy Weekend Plowing Snow

We had another weekend of stormy weather here in Nova Scotia. Snow, rain and freezing rain made for an exciting couple of days. I hope you enjoy the video and stay safe everyone!

Lol!!! “It always seems to snow ❄️ on the weekend”. Ain’t that the truth. But somehow rarely ever on Sunday’s when it’s 2X $ !!! I like how we get called in at 12:00 AM Monday morning for 1.5X $ when the snow done started Sunday evening, it’s rare but it does certainly happen. God Bless you Jim stay safe out there!!

Funny how that works, ehh? Where I work it's all straight time except for the holidays we get paid overtime. But we also get paid for a minimum of 90 hours every two weeks whether we work or not.

Great video. It was good to show people what happens when snow gets plowed into the road. Also as heavy and over weight the plow trucks are on ice they have a mind of their own. It is almost at times like a child’s toy being pushed on the floor. Take care and be safe.

Thanks Jim for your ride alongs.....I hoping to get on as a snow fighter this winter on the South Shore. Being an oil truck driver 30 years certainly helps to get to know the roads. I've been interviewed and road tested.....now waiting to hear back on snow school. Looking forward to getting out there to help keep our roads safe this winter and many winters to come. Got any tips? Another great video. People I think get the impression that because he is a grader he should have no problem well unfortunately you guys can have the same problem only difference is the vehicle is bigger and heavier. Stay safe Jim and keep the shiney side up 👍

I was out hauling water near Elmsdale on the 102 at that same time. Terrible driving, hard to see, but the owner put new Michelins on this fall , so it was bearable. Thanks for the great video

Yes people turn on your headlights and tail lights in a storm. Better yet just turn them on whenever your driving. The added safety of being seen far outweighs the cost of replacing your lights.

100% agreed on the headlights and people need to learn to clear the snow off their whole car,truck or SUV instead of leaving a foot of snow/ice on the roof waiting to fly through someones windshield.

Hi my name is Jay I’m from New York State. I really like your rig! Is that a all wheel drive Mack Granite? You we’re ask first about camera angle’s when you first mounted your camera on your plow frame I was really surprised how steady the camera was and the video quality was great! I’ve never seen anyone put a camera on a plow rig facing rear, that view was outstanding!!!! Breathtaking beautiful video quality and a unique perspective! The first time saw I believe it was 6 large NYS Thursday Authority plow’s clear a 3 lane Interstate and both shoulders in one sweep I felt like I did 35 years ago when we would listen for the Volunteer Fire Department to blow 3 blasts which meant no school! The first truck had 2 wing blade’s and a main plow he cleared the far left lane and shoulder then then other 5 ran about 15 20 feet behind staggered or in a diagonal pattern the far right and furthest truck back also had two wing blade’s along with the main plow and he would break off to clean the exit ramps and both shoulders with one pass the entire convoy would slow to crawl that way as he plowed the entrance ramp and both shoulders the rest of the rig’s knew exactly how fast to drive so they wouldn’t have to come to a complete stop! It was something I wish I had recorded but I was working for a Car Service when it snowed I was in early and worked all day into the night. I noticed you’re wing blade had a busted chain, are the wing blade’s on your rig able to what we call it is shelve the mounds of snow from past storms that I saw some were 3 maybe 4 foot high can you run with your wing blade like 2 feet off of the ground? That way you can cut that build up in half and hopefully be able to toss the new snow over the lower part and not put too much pressure on you’re wing blade? Just a thought? I plow for a gentleman who’s Dad hired me at 18 year’s of age with no experience using commercial lawn equipment in my life, I worked hard picked it up quickly and when I found out he offered snow plowing in the winter time well I had no choice to sign up not realizing that everyone starts off as a sidewalk shoveler needless to say I regretted that decision 😂 but come payday all of a sudden all of that pain had gone away because he paid so well during the summer I figured that’s what I was getting well it was considerably more than I expected so I said boss I think you over paid me? Nope you did a great job and I’m sure I paid you what all first year shoveler’s get which was a lot more than what I made in the summer, he said, Jay I’ve been doing this for 25 years and everyone knows I pay well, but as you know I do expect what I pay for that is why I expect nothing but perfection during the summer because my customers know I’m not cheap and they expect nothing but perfection. He’s since passed away. His son and grandson now run the business in one of New York State’s most affluent and wealthiest community’s same town Ex President Bill Clinton live’s in Chappaqua, NY I actually have two account’s across the road from where they live. Since all the accounts are residential we use Jeep Wranglers the Boss is the only one that salt’s driveways. Jeep’s are outstanding when it comes to plowing driveway’s with the 4.0 inline 6 cylinder engine in 4 Low they are unstoppable and imagination turning around a F-350 Super Duty with a 8 foot bad and a 8 foot plow on it? That would be impossible in the narrow Driveway’s Jeep’s can turn around with a plow on just about anywhere. But like everything there’s one drawback, they are very very light so plowing light powder we might put the rear chains on but when we get the crappy wet snow that I noticed made you’re ten wheeler slide just a little bit we have to chain up all 4 tires which makes for a really loud and uncomfortable ride to say the least! Do you chain up your front tires first, and with all the weight you have when fully loaded do you ever chain up you’re rear tires? Sorry for all of the questions but your video made me remember questions I’ve always wanted to ask someone who drove a Mack like the one you drive! What’s your gross weight when your fully load sand/salt mixture and brine, and do you have the GPS system that’s an option in the newer Mack Granite’s which let’s you know within 2 inches of where you are on the road like when you were in the whiteout condition’s that system is truly amazing! It’s not just so the operator can clear the entire lane it’s also a safety device and can keep you in your lane because it can sense since in some circumstances it’s almost impossible to gauge where exactly where you are on a unplowed roadway. But like you had mentioned I believe you have been on that route for 12 years or 8? No kind of fancy electrical gadget can trump years of experience! Doesn’t matter you remember every bump and they only get worse I agree with you on that! Does your main plow have a trip mechanism built in? I can’t see that entire directional plow doing anything other than maybe having a lip that folds under when hitting raised manhole cover’s or expansion joints or a new crack in the road that wasn’t there last year? I almost forgot you said you wish people would turn on their headlights during snow emergencies. It’s State Law in New York to have your headlights on whenever it’s raining, snowing or in between it’s common sense that you would want everyone to see you especially when most people don’t understand even though they have 4 wheel drive they don’t have 4 wheel stop fall back give yourself 4 times the amount of distance than you would normally during favorable driving conditions. My apologies for the long winded comment, one of the nicest most informative videos I ever watched from a County Snow Plow Operator I also appreciate all of the safety tips getting out and walking around especially when you feel your eyes getting heavy and clearing off all of the light lenses that were covered in snow I do the same thing. I was out for 13 hours almost 2 weeks ago and I love it just as much as the first day I started! That you again for taking the time to record edit and share this video! The truck has a factory heated windshield, but I find it always shuts off after about 20 minutes and I sometimes forget to turn it back on. It helps but not fantastic. Thanks for watching!

That was a nasty storm here in as NB.I have a big hard and with a nor East wind I had about 3 feet deep in the whole yard.My father ran over his plow with the super duty dot truck he ran years ago.
