Spoilers for the whole podcast basically: Ok, a lot of people pointed out that she most definitely knew about the whole Elias deal...or even if not everything at least about him not being actually Elias, but she wasn't correct about the tape recorders, because it wasn't Elias who listened, it was the Web (and probably Annabelle). It did occur to me though... did Elias have any clue about the tapes belonging to the web? My instinct tells me, for someone so obsessed with being in control (I think if he hadn't pledged himself over to the Ceaseless Watcher already, the Mother of Puppets could've potentially taken him too perhaps), he never really seemed bothered with the whole recorder thing (that's why I thought initially that it has to do with the Eye), so he must've had at least theories or good guesses as to their origin to not be concerned for someone listening in all the time. The other thing is the question, did he know/see what was happening or at least the place where Jon was kept? He said he couldn't see him, he didn't know, but we know better than to believe everything that bastard says. It could very well be that he just didn't really care and it was another test or he just wanted to make 100 percent sure Jon was marked. He also said, if I remember correctly, that he had to literally put the original Helen in a taxi to give a statement, maybe he had something to do with sending Michael over and Helen taking over to rescue Jon too? Now that I think about it, if Michael was able to find Jon and put a door there, I think Elias was able to see in there too. The thing is, Elias is such a secretive, lying, manipulative piece of shit that I can't help but wonder about these things. Or maybe it was just the Web who had a hand in some of these.

Elias must have known it was the Web. He knew Jon was marked by the Web when he was hired. It was my favorite reveal of the series. They had me right up to the end. It was pretty easy to figure out who 'Elias' was by mid-season 3; but, the Web being behind the tape recorders actually surprised me. I thought it was Jon/The Eye subconsciously manifesting them up 'til the reveal.

I only just thought of this: While Nikola being spontaneous and a bit erratic doesn't strike me as odd, I would have expected her to be less reckless with the ritual, given a previous version had already failed. So, let's weight the pros and cons (from the perspective of Nikola): The gorilla-skin is currently missing and it seems the Stranger had no real way of finding its location. However, Jon was looking for it and given his affiliation with the Eye, I feel like Nikola could have expected him to find it sooner than later. Using Jon's skin seems less reliable; while he is as she said symbolically appropriated and powered by a different fear which I assume should enhance his "power" as a focus, he is still very early in his development and as such there is no guarantee that he would be more or even just equally powerful as the gorilla-skin. If she miscalculates on this, it could doom her entire ritual whereas the gorilla-skin seems like a safe bet. I understand it comes with the advantage of taking out a major piece and one whose player is known for sabotaging numerous rituals, but she could still get that by just killing him. So all in all, I feel it would have been the wiser decision to wait longer and let the Archive find the skin (or as would be revealed discover that it is destroyed) and then ambush Jon while he is still scrambling for what they would use instead. Nikola's impulses and desires really pulled her along here, no? Of course this is just speculation but its interesting to think how and where the grand plan had been enforced.
