Most insulation lets radiant heat pass through. A good portion of your heat loss is through radiant heat. Night vision cameras are made to see this heat coming from a body. If you use a reflective material like a space blanket over your tent you will be much warmer. It will bounce back the radiant heat that you are losing.
@ModernDayPilgrim Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Interesting you should say that about the space blanket, I was looking up all those types of blankets when I was brainstorming on how to build this tent. My initial thought was those emergency blankets that retain heat, essentially a space blanket, but they didn’t have the higher size I needed to drape over my bed. That was exactly my thought though. 😃💯💯🙌🏼 thanks for taking the time to comment! Have a fantastic weekend!😃🙌🏼💯

“Tenting your bed” is something i recommend to EVERY van lifer i run across…. The whole point of four poster beds was to hold in the heat around a bed . When i was in the army and we were going to be out in the field for s training exercise, even if were were assured we would be sleeping in squad size tents the more experienced soldiers always took their shelter half and three poles … this would be tented over the cot so that body heat escaping from the sleeping bag would be detained in that small space before dissipating out into the larger area…. However the materials you used and how you secured it… I would secure it to your head rest not the visor… the clip that holds the visor in place is not that strong …. And while the moving blanket is insulated, its quilting is much more densely packed so its weight to insulating value isnt all that great… triple layered bedding of a cotton or satin sheet, a flannel blanket, and then a light quilt gives you a better insulator for the weight. And if gives you six levels of insulating options from just the sheet to all three . This is also alot easier to clean than a moving blanket. Capping the ends are easy and can be done using multitasking materials…. Simply using hangers with a shirt or jacket draped from the ^ part of a clothes hanger and a towel, flannel throw, or pants from the __ part of a clothes hanger can cap off either end …. Hanging up light weight T Shirts inside your tent from hip to toes can also create heat baffles …. In this way you can fold back your tent near your head while at the same time having a heat seal trapping in the warm air from toes to someplace below your shoulders ….

The best way to stay warm: two $40 sheepskin rugs from ikea, one under you, one above, with the wool side toward your body. I had no heat in my uninsulated cabin, was always warm and cozy for sleeping through a harsh winter. Get the real sheepskin, not synthetic, because real wool is warmer. Even though they're small, they work beautifully. You can also sit on a sheepskin any time during the day, and it's amazing how much warmer you feel.

Absolutely what I’ve been preaching. The folks that were dying in Texas from the freezing would have survived in a home, especially with family members, all sleeping in a small space. Using an insulated sleeping pad and perhaps throwing in an electric blanket for 15 minutes before going to sleep is helpful. Also a hot drink before bed, as well as light activity will warm you before getting into bed. Stay away from cotton and sweating, cuz it’s going to make you really cold. Pro tip: pack the clothes you’re going to wear the next day into the bottom of the sleeping bag so they are warm when you put them on.

I have a pair of these socks and they keep my feet warm while im working up in the mountains on rebuilding an old mobile home. I turn the heat on the high setting for 20 minutes to get my feet good and warm. Then turn the heat down to setting 2 . That keeps my feet warm for over 6 hours. By then the sun has warmed up the mobile. I also found 2 really thick blankets at the GoodWill for $10 bucks. I sleep in my truck sometimes when working on the mobile home. Saves on hotel room costs. That blanket keeps me so warm i wake up sweating sometimes in low 20 degree night temps. But i bought an electric blanket and hook that up to my Bluetti power station and that keeps me warm at night also. So the thick blanket is put away for now.

Another thing to get would be a survival blanket or space blanket, the space blanket is lite weight and will reflect 90% of your body heat, be careful you don't want to sweat that is bad. Make sure you have clean dry cotton or wool sock (tall ones) that will keep you warm. I grew up in northern New York State and always had one in my glove compartment. The space blanket will wear out, I would get a few, the heavy blanket will last forever but cost about $20. Cover you windows, you lose a lot of heat through them. Be very careful using any flammable heat source, you need to crack a window to not die. I would buy a battery operated carbon monoxide detector and keep spare batteries, I would bet a smoke detector also, they are cheap and could save your life. You should have a fire ext. remember that is your home.

In a documentary it was shown that the natural peoples in the far north used the same technique in winter; in a bigger tent there was a smaller tent where they all slept together. The part between the two floors was a storage room and a kitchen and such.

Its a great share. Also people can get a small potter plant - clay , put a candle in it and it helps to warm things up. Under the clay pot , place candle on a tea plate , cover w pot after lighting candle. Make sure its not close to bed or tent if using a tent over the bed.

Just use a hot water bottle to warm the sleeping bag. So much safer and works great.

At first, I thought , WHAT?? But then right away, I was thinking, this might be a great idea! I have a moving blanket exactly like this one that my son only used once and then gave it to me. I folded it a few times and played it under the bed of the dog, Rosie. It helps to keep her bed warm . Thanks so much for the idea. I'll call it the warming idea from YOU. See you on your next visit. I'm from Central Oklahoma.

Thanks for watching! I only chose this blanket because it was the only one I had that was sewn in the way like a quilt, that would be good for making a tent. I wouldn’t recommend it for a long-term, though. I’d prefer a nice wool blanket or heavy acrylic type blanket. The movie blanket is great because it doesn’t bunch up because of the way it sold, but that die will run out on everything if it gets wet and it will ruin your clothes, your bed everything. So be very careful about having any liquids around, when you have that tent up. I appreciate you taking the time to comment! If you can, hit a thrift store and see if you can find a nice, thick blanket. Something that would work like the moving blanket. Or just buy a quilt from the thrift store. Have a fantastic day!🙌🏼😃💯

Great idea, I would bet it works. Even in my living room, the closer I am to windows the colder it is in winter, so you're effectively shielding yourself from the window coolness with the moving blanket. Nice. Thanks, will give it a try in my DGC.

Very good suggestion. A number of other people here have added good input also. I already have a very good sleeping bag and pad foundation for below. Zero weather. But I’m going to try this in my Ford transit connect. It’s a 2012 cargo van which already has some insulation that helps a lot. One of the biggest suggestions though I can make to anyone is go south for the winter! I live in SoCal and camp out in the deserts in the winter, which can still get down into the teens. But nothing like subzerostuff they get up in the Midwest where my relatives live.

This is an option not only for car/van travelers but is a grand idea in event of a grid-down scenario in the house. Decreasing the space needed to stay warm may be paramount for comfort or even survival. Btw, I really enjoy your channel!

I love this idea. My only concern is the sun visor tie point. I would try putting a rope between the front doors, maybe you've been around the roof, and attaching the tie point to the rope, that might work... I'm just concerned about damaging the vehicle sun visor.

It is a great concept. I have put a two man tent inside a six man tent on cold outings before, same concept lesson space to heat up
@kellyjohnson3617 Жыл бұрын
You can put the reflectix under your sleepin* bag. It might be noisy, but if you don’t have a sleeping pad with a decent R value, the reflectix does work. You don’t have to even have a heavy blanket. You can use a blanket lined with reflectix or even a space blanket if you can anchor it down so it doesn’t let in drafts. Put a wool blanket over you, then a down blanket. Wear smart wool to bed, esp socks. Wear wool cap on your head along with a hoodie that is not cotton. Wear moisture wicking clothes so if you sweat at any point you won’t get wet, then followed by cold. If you don’t have electricity, hot water bottle works if you can heat up water with a gas or wood stove.

Add mylar blankets (two taped together, tape doesn't come off) on top of the blankets and it'll keep all the heat in. They are dirt cheap, I get them on walmart online ordering, I was getting 20 for $16.00, but I just searched and found them as 8 for $7, which is still pretty great. Don't put them next to your skin or just over the 1st blanket, mylar will trap moisture in, you'll wake up wet --- put on outside of sleeping bag or on top of blankets with a another blanket over to hold the mylar down.

Moving blankets can be a good insulator for tent floor, or even as a regular blanket.
@ModernDayPilgrim25 күн бұрын
@@mixmediaproductions thanks for watching! The thing with moving blankets is they are full of blue dye. When they get wet, that blue dye runs all over everything! And it is terrible! I don’t really recommend using them long-term like that, unless you really were going to put it on the floor underneath some other type of flooring and you don’t care if they get moist and the blue dye runs. But really be careful with these in any other scenario. Thanks! Have a fantastic day!😃💯🙌🏼

Another tip is to get 4 gal square food grade surplus buckets with snap on lid ( $3 on craigslist ) you can put everything from food, water, cloths, gear, you name it. Use these as a legos style base for your bed instead of sleeping cot frame. Modular mix and match, easy to swap in and out, great size, not to heavy water proof, air proof, better than any Rubbermaid or other purchase totes. You can even use one for your toilet.. Check them out.

There are little 200w heaters too that you could hook to your battery. It would easily heat that area in your tent in a few minutes. Home Depot sells them.

There always candles so long as you use a talight in a sturdy holder not near anything flammable. One flame can hear up any space quite well. And as you have some energy to plug into you could also do a heat pad or even a pet heat pad. Either would help.

Yes! Genius!!! I had a 3 level house in Kansas. A basement, main floor, and an upstairs office. I put blankets over the doorways to the office, kitchen, and heated my bedroom and living room only. At night I heated only the bedroom with a small space heater that went on and off on low. It snow a lot that winter but I really never was cold. My heating bill was super low. I worked 2 jobs so I was only home to sleep mostly.

Good idea & it's stealthy somewhat, especially if you don't have window covers. My cold car camping setup: * Full sized heavy wool blanket. A zero degree rated sleeping bag. A thick down filled comforter. * I wear sweat pants & a long sleeve t-shirt under a hooded zip sweatshirt. ( A hooded sweatshirt & a beanie hat are critical to reduce heat loss through your head.) Also, cheap brown garden gloves for exposed hands & wool socks. This setup works great in a vehicle, no need for a dangerous or expensive heater. ( Also, having a dog to cuddle up with under the covers makes a huge difference too.) In the cold mornings, I just make a cup of coffee in the suv on my propane stove, this warms the interior up. Hope this helps. Nice, to the point video.

@@ModernDayPilgrim Thanks. Someone else in the comments said that these moving blankets are highly flammable! Not good! Try using a 100% wool blanket for your pup tent idea, wool is fire resistant....& probably warmer. ( Many vehicle dwellers cook inside their rigs, so having fire proof fabrics is important.)

Really smart solution! Just bought bags of pocket warmers to go to outdoor holiday events with the kids and I thought those would also be great to put inside the bag! The reviews say they last up to 8 hours or better, they are safe and come in larger sizes. A couple at your feet, your core and by your head should keep your toasty the whole night if temps really drop! Happy holidays everyone, be safe!

I recently stayed in my van and it got down in the 20's. It's the first time I tried one of my heat solutions, a twin mattress heating pad. I put it under my mattress and plugged it into my solar generator. It's an off brand, said it was a 800w but acts more like a 500w. It ran the heating pad for 9 hours and kept me warm enough and I only had one comforter on top. If it had been colder I would have needed something else producing heat and some insulation in the my full size van would have helped too

love it. Another thought is to use a wool blanket. Wool is a great insulate and it. works well in both cold or hot.

I think this will work really well. The cold air won't be on your body because the blanket will stop it. Your breathing will help to keep you warm. I've seen tent campers use a small igloo tent inside a bigger tent to do the same thing that you're doing. I look forward to the review.
