This is how I've felt even when "gatekeeping bad" was the common belief. Even before there were clear counter-examples to that way of thinking, it was clear that communities founded on a core belief or common set of values should welcome new members who share those values and not let fakes and bad actors change the core identity of the community. New communities can be made for people with different values - that's fine, since they don't have to align themselves with the old community if they don't want to. And there's no reason why new things can't spawn from old things. But under no circumstances should they call the original fans "fake" for not automatically liking the new things; I've heard that, and it's an absolutely smooth brained take. Storytelling is one of the oldest human past times. It's a very important activity to us. If you tell a bad story, the story won't be remembered. When your company is making decent games you get to bring back what people did and didn't like so hopefully the next game is better, it's fine work if you enjoy that sort of thing. A good boss in this field will want to you find bad reviews. The other time where it sucks is when you try to filter the critiques you bring back to your boss to force your ideology in and that results in flops because you're tricking the company into releasing flops. Community Managers are supposed to be the bridge between the fanbase and the devs, via social media, streams, forums etc. They're usually relaying issues and feedback to devs, and then announcing changes, fixes, and future plans to the fanbase. Best case is look at Megan and Rebecca from Warframe, two who do a fantastic job engaging with the players and devs. CMs like these people only listen and voice what they want to hear and say, regardless if it's to the benefit of the game and/or wider community. Whilst I can understand people being upset that their work isn't received well after investing many years, I as a customer, am not obligated to spend my money on things I don't deem worth it.

The best part about being an old gamer is seeing the industry call me the problem when they forget that people like me were the ones who kickstarted it. Making money was not the priority back then, and I enjoyed gaming for what gaming was, and gaming got better through the love for games. Now, all that matters are the 24-hour sells and pre-order numbers and how the next dlc is going to please investors.
