This is amazing!! Thank you! I wonder how you would tackle Heresy Styled Space Wolves with the darker gray color scheme?

Thanks 😀🤘 I might have to give them a shoot one day. I really like their dirty cold light grey. With how relatively light it is, I would probably work down from white primer, I think that would be easier for their color.

Lovely stuff, I've been doing similar for my Word Bearers using stippling instead of sponging; I'll have to give this a try and see how it compares! I also glaze the red with flesh tearers red contrast after the stippling but before the grime to get some of the saturation back on the highlights. Gave your channel a sub, love to see good army painting techniques and fun kitbashing! And for the record, it's "cat-uh-fract-ee-eye" 😅

Cheers mate! Ye it's been really fun using that method. Painting flat areas especially large terrain pieces with a sponge over airbrushing has been surprisingly fun.

Great video! Do you need to apply varnish before using the streaking grime? Or is the acrylic paint safe from the grime/white spirits?
@AnotherDayMiniatures
@AnotherDayMiniatures 11 ай бұрын
Thank you! In my personal experience I never had an issue. However sometimes I do varnish, if the layers were very thin. Definitely make sure the paint is dry and you use a tiny amount of odourless thinner, applying very little pressure when cleaning it off.

Absolutely fantastic. I just finished my Deathdredd using a similar scheme and I think sponging is my new favourite way to paint. If I might offer a small challenge? Can you do something in yellow? My GSC army is begging for some paint and grimy yellow is going to be the primary theme. I’m a little scared 😂

That's fantastic to hear. Sponging is surprisingly relaxing, feels like even the mistakes are just part of the process. Yellow ? you monster! But yes I'll try, I can't promise anything for obvious yellow reasons 😁

Do you think the paint before sponging on (like you would if using a brush), or use it straight from the pot?

What's the difference between the different streaking grimes. Why use panzer in particular?
@AnotherDayMiniatures
@AnotherDayMiniatures Жыл бұрын
In theory, it should only be color. However in practice I also found that streaking grimes have different textures, some are smoother than others, have different pigment density and so on. Panzer grey is definitely my favorite over all, due to how red/brown complements most miniatures and it has the smoothest effect.
@AverageIrishDude

@@AnotherDayMiniatureshave you found any of the other streaking grimes good for anything else? I'm going to pick up the panzer gray but I would also like to know if I should get any other grimes to use for different things.
@AnotherDayMiniatures

Absolutely, classic streaking grime is also fantastic. It's my go to for painting Nurgle and the death guard. It goes well with most miniatures for a more grimdark look. I also found some use for "Dark Mud" it's also an enamel paint. The other have green and red hue, this has more yellow. I found it works well with bone color and for example Droids from Star Wars.

How do you manage not to scrape any paint off when removing the streaking grime?
@AnotherDayMiniatures
@AnotherDayMiniatures Жыл бұрын
AK Odourless Thinner. It almost instantly reactivates the grime and it comes off very smoothly without any pressure. Make sure your q-tips ( if you use them) aren't too hard, they come in a large variety and I've had some that were more or less sandpaper.

Gave this a shot on some chaos space marines and very much enjoyed it. It's quite a cathartic way to paint. That begin said i did end up building up a bit of texture on my guys. I personally don't mind, maked them look a bit more haggard. I wanted to ask, generally how mosit you should keep your sponge whilst dabbing away?
@AnotherDayMiniatures
@AnotherDayMiniatures Жыл бұрын
That's awesome to hear. It's definitely my go to way to paint something for that reason, especially on days where I don't feel like painting, by the end I'm always glad I did. Hmm, regarding the moisture a good rule of thumb is if you see clear sharp texture of the sponge, you're working too dry. I usually dip the sponge in water and then squeeze the water out of it in one go, ends up still having just enough to work. I always keep the paint on the wet pallet, to make sure it doesn't have time to dry up between layers. A good way to practice would be to prime a bottle cap, and sponge on around 8 layers of paint( doesn't need to be different color). If you got the moisture right, there should be almost no visible texture by the end.

@AnotherDayMiniatures That's a superb rundown of the process. I'll definitely adjust my method next time and juice everything that bit extra. Much obliged for the very informative answer. It'll be interesting to try this on the new levithan guys actually, the comparative lack of trim definitely makes it a speedier prospect. But we'll finish the Word Bearers first. 😅
@AnotherDayMiniatures
@AnotherDayMiniatures Жыл бұрын
Hope it helps 🤞. The new terminators would be a laugh in comparison. The trim on CSM is brutal, but damn if it doesn't look awesome.

I've been doing something similar to this for my Word Bearers, with stippling instead of sponging; definitely think I'm gonna have to give this a go to see how it compares. Have fun with it, and hang in there dealing with CSM trim; my approach for my Black Legion and Thousand Sons was to just prime gold, shade and highlight the metal quickly, then pick out the armor. Much, much faster, but unfortunately wouldn't work for something like this.

Can't wait to try this on my new killteam! Random question, are contrast paints too thin for this? I imagine they might end up in smoother blendings... Or ruin everything 😅
@AnotherDayMiniatures
@AnotherDayMiniatures Жыл бұрын
Cheers! 😃🤘 Trying to sponge contrast paints over black will indeed be difficult. Mainly due to them being transparent, as well as having low pigment density. Another problem is you would waste a LOT of it, since the sponge would absorb a large portion of the paint. Contrast paints do make some really nice washes you can try as an alternative to streaking grime.

Contrast paints will be pretty frustrating to use for sponging directly...but I actually use them afterwards to smooth out the texture a little and get back some saturation in my red highlights! Give it a go.

I've actually done that to a death guard rhino and some terrain. It scales really well and works way better on bigger panels. I've also seen some people apply to knights with amazing results.

Should be very similar. You ideally want a model size of a space marine and up, and with a lot of open "flat" areas.

If I wanted to do a bronze/Balthazar gold (the citadel color) as opposed to the gold, do you have a stronger paint that I could use to have good coverage?

Yeah you could use Vallejo Metal Color Copper + Green Stuff World Bronze Pigment. It would give a very similar color.

I just mix them untill the Vallejo shifts closer to the GSW bronze. Add a little at a time to prevent clumping up of the pigment.
