Hey so i know this is an older video, but i love this grimdark look, its amazing, and ill be doing it for my Blood Angels for sure. The thing is, i also have Sanguinary Guard.....and Dante...meaning lots of gold....so i was wondering if you could do a grimdark video for a gold coloured marines: Sanguinary guard, Custodies, stuff like that. I'd love that very much, especially now with Custodies being very popular. :) thanks.

A truely awesome scheme there, and the effects achieved in almost a 'less is more' way - only a few layers of paint applied a certain way, when the Grim Dark style is almost always seen as 'after the rust enamal wash you then want a grease wash, and later there will be a dirt and grime enamal wash. Finally a smokey oil paint to grease everything. Then Pigments.' And as a big fan of yours, please only release videos when you feel they are ready. No need to rush them to meet a deadline - reminds me of an advert for Grolsch Lager we had in the UK - Quality takes time, these things cant be rushed, only drink it when it's ready (perhaps your voice put me in mind of it!)

This style of painting is how I do terrain. It is also the best way to paint Orks and the classic ramshackle style. I’m glad someone of stature in the community is showing off this style and introducing people to the possibilities of painting without feeling like you have to paint a certain way just because it’s established.

Thank you, I have been taking more time painting and enjoying it, even though I batch paint, and this is very similiar to my paint technique for my salamanders, mine is just in reverse with green over a red/dark brown prime, chpping medium, green then chip the green, paint the rest of the minis base coats, then apply dunkelgrau, with a tweezer and sponge on the edges, go in and do details and chipping. Thx for the vid.

This is an absolutely amazing show of talent from you as usual. This is EXACTLY how I imagine grimdark, not lacking in colour but realistic. I'd love to see a series like this where it takes the traditional schemes of most armies and does this. Especially for colours like black which can tend to be very bland or hard to highlight.

I think the grim dark style can mostly be defined by a worn look and I don't mean chips, dents, bullet damage, grit etc. I think of it like if you took two separate pictures of yourself, one well rested, one where you haven't slept for 48 hours and that's what it's like, you may not even look dirty but all the line on your face get drawn out, your skin looks more textured, you get that dull look in your eyes etc. It wouldn't be fun if it was just that though and the grim dark style of the Horus Heresy is what got me painting my minis like this. I like the dirty, grimy, bullet riddled look and even though I like stepping out of my comfort zone and trying different painting styles, I always love going back to the grim dark and playing with oils and enamels and pigment and sponges and what not. Painting grim dark will never win you a contest that isn't supposed to be in the grim dark style specifically, but it is my favorite look

Amazing video, i have been eagerly following all the Grim Dark videos as you release them! I am very curious how you would tackle Dark Angels because they have such a darker base colour. I find it tricky to wrap my head around without them looking like Salamanders... Would you apply this technique but just start with a very dark base colour and work up to something that is still fairly dark? Or would it work better to treat it as black and use the style from your Black Templar video? Curious if any other Trovariates have some input?

I had found only in the last year that painting a bit over the decals is highly important to blend them in a bit more, thanks for pointing this out. First of all great video and this basically works as a really good tutorial for battle damage and chipping. However if anyone is curious when it comes to chipping if you wanted to be super accurate to the lore ceramite is more like brown stony material than metal,so the chipping would reflect that. That's at least how they're saying it is right now, from what I gather GW has changed it's mind on that like 5 times already and grey knights don't paint their armor so whatever the fuck they use to make theirs that's just how it looks and there are like 4 different official chapters that use ''unpainted ceramite'' and they're different colors of gray, white and brown.

I don't know how: but seeing this style makes me feel like my hands have just gone through an afternoon of handling rusted steel bars. The style reminds me of what the junkyard in Thor Ragnarok looks like: once striking, noble colours that have not entirely deteriorated, but have clearly seen the elements for a decade long mission, and desperately needs a clean up by a Chapter Serf. I reckon painting a Sgt like this and having him stand in front of his new charges, all clad in clean red armour would be a badarse diorama.

It doesn't matter, use any primer you have. I don't remember what video you refer to, but I don't think I said "a satin primer is best for painting". I probably said something like a satin primer gives you an idea of where to place highlights when you shine a light on or i said i use one because the camera picks it up better than a matte one.

I think that the stage that you describe, where all techniques are just tools in your toolbox is the right point that we want to reach but we may have to go through more basic “standard” approaches to get to that stage of painting enlightenment. Like the concept of Shu-ha-ri - first follow the standards, then start distancing yourself and finally detach fully to have free form. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuhari As always, awesome content, keep it up, this is inspiring. And meditative as well to watch.

Yes, you need to break everything down into learning steps. But it is also a learning step (shortcut) to realise that you do not have to limit yourself to "techniques" when you can combine them all into one painting approach.

I am trying to paint faster (last model took me three months with intermittent painting). Mind you, it was my third mini since I started painting again. NMM is challenging :-S! Have since made a new habit of trying to paint everyday. I am batch painting 3 orc arrer boyz from 3rd edition. in a couple of weeks I have done the skin and one of their shirts. My aim with these is to paint faster, but still look good enough. It's not like the models are dear to my heart or expensive. I just tend to fall into the slow process of building up gradients with layering and glazing. This however gives me joy. I'm a chef. I love cooking and taking my time, putting my heart and effort into food to make a great result. That is not what most chefs do, I am always behind on deadlines and getting yelled at, but sometimes I manage to make a nice dish that has a narrative (eg I picked these kaffir lime leaves from my tree, got thorns in my fingers, and painstakingly washed the stink bugs off them) and a quality, a story, a human feeling to it that is more than the dishes material parts. I don't know if there is a word for this, but my senses know it when it's there. I agree about not making painting feel like work. I want it to be my release from work and time pressure, not more of it. I can relate to your sense of delivering videos and this killing your joy somewhat. I feel that whenever money is involved, love suffers. The actual difference between a professional and an amateur is that the former does it for money, the latter for love. But we have financial obligations, so we compromise about what we can achieve given the pressures, and still take joy when we can? Even if the result isn't perfect? Sorry for the rant. Great video man. Thanks.
