I use hydron peroxide weekly to control algae. I turn off my light and pumps. And just like you said, my plants have started growing better. Thank you for the video

I had a very sick oscar, he contracted what I think was columnaris. In Canada, the wonderful government banned all medications without a vet prescription. Well, it would have cost me hundreds of dollars to actually contact a vet that treats fish. And there's so few of them, that they have the market cornered. So I've been using peroxide for many years for treating algae. I looked up a few studies that were published about peroxide effects on sick fish. I ended up dosing my oscar at 45ml per gallon and letting him bathe for 40 minutes. I did that over and over again for a month, I went through many bottles. It fixed him! Completely! I had shrimp culls in the tank with him, and they did absolutely fine at that extreme dosage! I was shocked to say the least. Last august he passed away from old age, but I've been dosing peroxide to all my tanks ever since. Now I don't recommend you do this to your fish. This was a last ditch effort or death. But it happened to work for for me. So something to consider before using expensive medications. Ps: this is alot cheaper algae treatment than using something like seachem excel, which is glutaraldehyde, a very toxic cleaner that has no business being used in the hobby.

Most articles I have read on dosing 3% hydrogen peroxide say to use 1.5 to 2 ml per gallon. Why did you use 3 ml per gallon or 30 ml for 10 gallons? I had a major outbreak of black beard algae and it took over my tank before I discovered using 3% hydrogen peroxide to treat it. The BBA was in all my decorations, plants and the glass and I figured I would give it a shot. I dosed 2 ml per gallon for 2 weeks and the BBA disappeared. I then added Florida Flag Fish to my tank as they eat BBA and it has been over a year and I have not had another outbreak. Every once in a while I see a tuft of BBA, but the Florida Flag Fish eat it before it spreads. Thanks for the great videos. If I had seen your videos a couple of years ago it would have been so helpful.

30 mL is 1 ounce. That is how much you need to put in per 10 gallons of aquarium water. As you can tell by my latest video where I show the tank all inhabitants of the tank are doing just fine along with what plants the goldfish don't eat are doing fine..
@BTQ4106 ай бұрын
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums I understand your inhabitants are doing good, but was interested in your reasoning in going with 30 ml instead of the lesser amounts found in a variety of other articles and videos. Are there benefits to that particular amount? I suppose it probably works faster, but is there an increased risk? What are the pros and cons of that amount vs 15 or 20 ml?

Thank you for your video Dr. I have a 4000 liter koi pond; about 1000 gallons; well filtered. Have been having problems with long brown algae because the pond is exposed to a bright sunlight. I have tried to grow emergent aquatic plants to absorb the nitrate, but it has not been working well because apparently the plants consume the Potassium and Phosphate from the water quicker, making them limiting the nitrate absorption. I'm still trying to dose these nutrients, but wary about hurting the fish. I want to try your method of adding H2O2. If you don't mind, can you confirm that the concentration of the H2O2 is 3%, and dosage you mentioned is 30ml/10 gallons? It comes out to about 3 liters/1000 gallons per day. Appreciate it, thank you!

Sometimes in ponds they will use 6% hydrogen peroxide. But I only use 3% hydrogen peroxide at 30 mL per 10 gallons of water..

Ugh I feel your pain brother. I have the same algae and it’s all over my plants and even in some of my moss. I also have that long stringy stuff clinging to my red root floaters. I decided to go the h2o2 route and will be dosing this weekend.

Being an avid gardener, both in my yard and aquariums I fall victim to the trend of NOT introducing foreign chemicals into those two environments. Perhaps the Roundup scare started this trend and has impacted my aquarium keeping. Nonetheless I respect your research on this and the knowledge transfer to your followers. Right now I am experimenting with floating watersprite. The massive root clusters and spreading, floating foliage seem to do a good job of absorbing excess nutrients, dimming the lights on the bottom and in turn keeping the algae under control.

Thanks Dr Novak. Is it necessary to dose daily. Would once weekly dosing work?

If you're looking to keep algae at bay, once a day at 30 mL per 10 gallons of water will definitely control any algae outbreak in your aquarium. Does this mean you have to do this forever? No you may want to stop after two or three months to see if another outbreak of ALgae will reoccur..

As I've said, before, any goldfish that I have bought from the United States, are still alive to this day. Any other goldfish that were bought from overseas like Thailand, except for two of them that I sold, got dropsy and passed on. Any time you buy a goldfish from Thailand you better make sure that they will acclimate to your water conditions and food. You have to remember that all those goldfish are grown in Ponds not aquariums or vats like in the US. I think there is a grower here in the US that grows nice goldfish just like they do in Thailand, but he grows all his fish in the US and they do not seem to have the same problems with dropsy like to Thailand, goldfish do. I've had American goldfish last 15 to 17 years without any problems.. The Ranchus I had only lasted no longer than about two years that were bought from Thailand.

This video confirmed my decision. I bought a bottle from CVS yesterday. Socked all my plants for 15 minutes and driftwoods for 30 minutes to kill black algae. Put them back in and put some drops in the tank and turned off the pump and light for 20 minutes. All my fishes are fine and the plants seem better today. Will make regular peroxide treatment at least once a week from now on.

Sounds like a good plan. Just be careful about overdoing it and using too much.

I love peroxide but for hair algae, if nothing eats the rotting remains you’re gonna grow more hair algae. And it’s hard to remove from substrate and rocks especially when you have a scape that can fall apart.
@Sinserg6 ай бұрын
I've always used the peroxide when the lights were on, it really helps keeping hair algae in check, I still get it but next time I will try it as you recommend, with the lights off, thank for sharing!

Ive been following you now 4 awhile, in fact, ive set up several tanks using the methods that you speak on. This 1 has me confused, instead of using hydrogen peroxide to control algae why don't you just cut back feeding and lighting...why are you feeding so much? Is it a experiment that you are conducting or something?
@anoxicfiltrationplenums3 ай бұрын
That is a very good question I've been waiting for somebody to ask me that question. I do not cut back on lighting because I like to see my fish in a brighter light and not a dimmer light. Plus, it does help plant growth as we all know. Another thing is I don't cut back on feeding in order to not stunt the growth of the fish.

looks like h2o2 worked. i don't know what that algae is, it grows in tufts. the stuff i had was like it but black-green in color, i assume called black beard algae. i introduced a lot of ram(shorn) snails, at least 50 to this 20 gal long tank. first they cleaned every spot of green algae off the glass, in a matter of days. then they started eating the black-green tufts, as it was all that was left. it took at least a month, maybe 2, but they got rid of all of it. the only plant i have in the tank was christmas moss and it grew so profusely it filled the tank. there is some frog bit floating on the surface. i remove about half of the moss every month or so and donate to LFS. the snails crawl on it and clean it but not eat it. possible the moss competed with the algae for nutrients and won. now there are few snails left, i guess there is not enough algae to sustain a big population. the tank is 4 years old, and the snails have been in there 18 months or so. i change about 50% water twice a month, including vac'ing the gravel. old habit. it's forever an experiment. now water is clear, one airstone, no filter, and only 1 fish, a 20'' long black ghost knife. i have a 75 gal tank for him when i can get it set up.

@anoxicfiltrationplenums7 ай бұрын
Yes you can but you would be using a lot of Hydrogen peroxide every day.
@sunshinevalley07 ай бұрын
For anyone that would be concerned with hydrogen peroxide all they need to know is that it turns into water when light hits it.. this is why hydrogen peroxide is sold in dark bottles
@sunshinevalley07 ай бұрын
Especially one percent levels are low . Now if you’re using lab grade concentrated peroxide. . Expect a lot of cellular death from everything.
@anoxicfiltrationplenums7 ай бұрын
That's why I only add it when the lights are off.
@aryah15137 ай бұрын
Also to prevent it from wiping out your good bacteria you might want to turn the pump off, spot treat the dose and wait for a few hours, then do a 50% water change before running the pumps again. 3ml/gal is way too high for 3% peroxide.
@anoxicfiltrationplenums7 ай бұрын
Spot treating is what gets people into trouble. Yes it will work but if you add too much, I've heard of tanks getting wiped out of life stock and killing plants..
@aryah15135 ай бұрын
You're making a confusing statement - "if you add too much" of peroxide it would kill your livestock... that's what I'm saying... I'm saying instead of pushing that dosage, spot treat. So for your 10G tank, pour 15ml of peroxide in a cup, but instead of pouring that in the tank, use a pipette to blast the algae directly. It's only dangerous for shrimp and snails in hair algae, moss, etc. however so is 3ml/gal. The reason I mentioned spot treating was because you can use way less. If you are afraid your fish will nip at the bubbles and die, just dilute the 3% to 1.5% and it shouldn't kill even the weakest fish. However, I came here to see your regimen again because my shrimp tank is filled with hair algae and they made babies that are EVERYWHERE in the hair algae... so now I have no choice but to mix the peroxide in tank water.

What's the dosing schedule for hydrogen peroxide? 1 Oz daily per 10 gallon?
@anoxicfiltrationplenums7 ай бұрын
Once a day 120 mL at noon when the lights are off. The lights will not come on until 2 o'clock in the afternoon.
@aryah15135 ай бұрын
He is saying 3 milliliters per gallon. I think 2 is safer. I think 120ml is for a 40G tank.

A lot of these plants are grown in laboratories, where hydrogen peroxide and strong chemicals are used in order to disinfect them for tissue culture
@gertinewoord18875 ай бұрын
I think youre substrate is to open and you just feed to much if i am honest.diming the lights whith floating plants would help also if that is an option.setup the tank do you dont have to de so much waterchanges because that disturbes the balance everytime you do so.also keep less fish in such a small aquarium.
