In a tank like that it’s expected to grow a lot of algae and cyano because there is nothing to compete with the algae it’s plain gravel and nutrients 😂

That makes no sense Cory gave us many good advices even at expenses of profit when he teaches how to customize hang on back filters and remove the cartridges well he sells cartridges! What’s the problem not having interest in your system? He said even canisters are bad and he sells these filters lol

I'm so glad I got into this hobby AFTER I started my garden & greenhouse, otherwise all of this water & material would be such a waste. 😎 And the garden also supplies the inoculated & nutrient-rich base I need for my dirt-planted tanks.

I have had goldfish for years. I have hanging filters, I start with feeder fish, that within a year are 7-8" long and I move them successfully to an outdoor pond. I add a scope of food grade diatomaceous earth everytime I add water, I don't have sick or dying fish. I now have fancy and orandas, also with no issues. I also add DE to my fish pond. This has worked for me for over 20 years 🤷

Well, I beg to differ Sir. I have a 3 year old 75g tank with 3 Central American Cichlids around 7 inches each. I have 2 HOB filters - I have my Pothos in both of these filters planted in Bio-Max and Filter floss on top to help keep my water clear. I feed my fish once a day every day. I have 0ppm Ammonia and Nitrite.... My Nitrate level stays between 5ppm-10ppm constantly. I only do water changes 2x a month. Before this setup, I had 2 canister filters and NO PLANTS... My Nitrates would range between 20ppm-120ppm and I was doing WEEKLY water changes, sometimes 2x a week. Plants will CONSUME NITRATES... they will NOT eliminate Nitrates but they will keep it at a MINIMUM!!!!

I've been watching a lot of videos on this channel and I have to say, they're really interesting! I think I'm ready to try the Plenum on all of my tanks, but I'd like to start on my small 10 gallon tanks first. I have a question: how do you cut the uplift tubes to make them shorter? I've tried using a handsaw, but they always end up breaking. Any tips on what to use instead?

Deep sand bed is the reason it works not the undergravel filter The deep sand beds can be viable but it’s not for free you need to know how to maintain them You need a good sump refugium skimmer and all that jazz There is a serious issue you aren’t considering here the saltwater just can’t be high nutrient aquatic environment otherwise it’s a disaster In comparison to fresh water the saltwater concentrations of nitrites and nitrates are much much lower

You've already made three bad comments sarcastically. One more comment from you and you'll get pulled from my channel. You don't know what you were talking about. You were obtuse to the facts and you must understand you are. Quit trying to convince people on what they should think because it's not your way. Your way is not the right way because you don't understand microbiology. It's better to be thought of as a fool than open one's mouth and relieve all doubt.

Unfortunately, if your plants cannot utilize it, it's going to be wasted. Yes CO2 will make a big difference.

Thank u for being the best at explaining it! I never had success with them yrs ago but I know know I should have just layed them on the substrate. You’re correct they are hard to find and quite expensive for us budget folks. 🙂. I probably killed them myself by burying them a forth of an inch as I was told. 🙄. They are beautiful plants so I’m goina search for reasonable priced ones and try again. As for the CO2. I don’t have gas but I add liquid CO2. Do u think that would work? Again, thank u for the info and have a great day. Bless, Mary.

ahhh… could it be alkaline water? From my experience algae prefers soft water (especially the green stringy filamentous algae). You mentioned in a video a while back about ‘biogenic decalcification’ which is interesting to me as I do not use CO2 injection to grow plants. Walstad talks about ‘hard water plants’ accessing bicarbonates in the hard water. My guess is these plants are hardwater plants. Valisneria definitely is. That is maybe its advantage over algae in this tank? I avoid soft water. Prefer moderately hard.

Great video sir I think you have done a great thing when you advocated that one should use only iron and potassium gluconate for plant tank. That was the great education where all the other sailors are still selling NPK fertilisers. Those are good for terrestrial plants and not aquatic plants. Change my life. Thank you so much.

Thankq so much Dr. Novak. Greetings from Malaysia. I setup 4 of my tanks with plenum that u taught. All doing well and guppies live longer than usual, compare to previous deep substrate tank. Shrimp breeding is fast and non stop in plenum tank... Half year passed, no water changing just top up regularly, everything fine now. But one thing I found, I was using zeolite for BCB basket in beginning (can't find non clumping kitty litter in malaysia) but failed, it seems suck up the calcium or other thing that makes all plants turned malnutrition looks and cherry shrimp can't molt properly. Until I took it away n add more calcium magnesium.... Thanks for the teaching!!

Ive been following you now 4 awhile, in fact, ive set up several tanks using the methods that you speak on. This 1 has me confused, instead of using hydrogen peroxide to control algae why don't you just cut back feeding and lighting...why are you feeding so much? Is it a experiment that you are conducting or something?
@anoxicfiltrationplenums
@anoxicfiltrationplenums 11 күн бұрын
That is a very good question I've been waiting for somebody to ask me that question. I do not cut back on lighting because I like to see my fish in a brighter light and not a dimmer light. Plus, it does help plant growth as we all know. Another thing is I don't cut back on feeding in order to not stunt the growth of the fish.

Plants need GH. Plants utilize the ions. More than nitrogen or iron imo. Most hobbyist planted tanks do not need or have used Co2, but certainly can help. I can see doing a full dose of iron in a lightly planted tank, with slow growing plants causing a issue. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know if you agree with this but I have heard that the comet goldfish are closer to the wild type of the species and that fantails are basically a comet goldfish with longer fins and are still quite hardy. Also I have read quite often in the literature of the fishkeeping hobby that goldfish will not breed in our temperate climate. I know this to not be true. About 20 years ago I went with a friend to purchase some comet goldfish for her backyard pond that had no fish in it. we got the very cheap fish that I believe are sold for feeders. Over the years the original 10 or so fish have increased to about 100 and in late summer is when I start to see the current season's new fish appear at about the size of a quarter. Also...about my friends pond...when they moved into the house the pond was probably overstocked with a dozen or so large Koi. We cared for them as well as we were able and they seemed to do ok. A few years later at the end of winter, when we were cleaning up the pond we find NO KOI! We ultimately assumed that raccoons from nearby woods had hunted them out and dragged them off to the woods because there was no trace of them in or around the pond.

I have a dirt-planted tank & have really good luck with guppies (oak leaves to treat hard water). I did have to fight a month-long nitrate/ite spike which I found out that the cories dug down into the substrate level. Capping it with sand evened things out & I haven't had a problem since. I feed 2x/day for the babies + cories, but I've also got some shrimp & an algae eater in there to help manage the extra, otherwise they get fed once every 2 days if there's only adults. I have a mix of guppies & regularly cull the older once so they don't inbreed badly. My black moscows, the redtail, platinum, dumbos & a couple wild ones are the hardiest & most vigorous, but I haven't lost a single one over 5 months, apart from culling.

Been watching your videos,very informative. Been watching a number of channels including Father Fish and the Walstad method. I used under gravel filters for years in the 70’s and early 80’s. I see that I was doing it wrong. I used power heads! Been contemplating a combo. Undergravel filter with rings underneath and window screen cover then Father Fish method with a short stub to keep a very slow water flow. Thanks in advance.
