Hi Doc, I can one again confirm your method works. I set up a 1gal plenum with kitty, lava rock and a sponge filter. I added a pregnant shrimp and the Aquairum worked fine all the time. Countless times I’ve heard “keeping a small Aquairum leads to unstable water parameters” - maybe if you do it other ways If you do it your way with a plenum and kitty litter, I’ve had no problems. Thank you once again for sharing these ideas!

Hello, i have been watching your videos for a 3-4 months now. Not just the new ones but even the older ones from the beginning and i have a genuine concern. If the anoxic filtration truly works as well as you claim then why did your Goldfish die off from disease as well? I recall you mentioning that other youtubers who keep goldfish were making the same mistakes over and over again and their fish die of Dropsy and other reasons but you simply glaze over the death of your goldfish and chop it up to the source you recieved them from??? How am i supposed to believe in your system if you simply got the same results others have gotten???

In Australia, i can't get laterite kitty litter, I can only get bentonite clay. Would you know if this would have a similar action as laterite? Living in Australia sometimes is like living on another planet. The things you can walk into Walmart and buy is amazing, we dont get that here. I had to send to the USA for an undergravel filter because I couldn't get one here big enough. Great video 🇦🇺

@icarlsw3411 күн бұрын
I too had trouble finding a cat litter. I use safe-t-sorb which is used as an oil absorbent. It has no additives like the cat litters in my area. I live in Canada BTW. It does seem to drop my pH though for a few months. My pH out of the tap is almost an 8. I just setup a new 10gal with only safetsorb. The pH in the tank is 6.4 right now. But I noticed in my other tanks that have been setup for months the pH has gone up to about 7.6. The fish don't seem to be effected as it is a gradual change.

Great Video Dr Novak. Your videos are always great and informative. Yes I agree with you about the goldfish not having a 3 second memory. When I was younger I had read it somewhere as a goldfish has a 3min memory which is also not true. If their memories were only 3 seconds or 3 min, they would not be getting stressed out when handled or during water changes. My goldfish don't get stressed out when I put my hands or a ruler in the tank as they know I will not bother them, but they definitely freak out the moment they see a fishnet even though I rarely move them about unless absolutely necessary but they still definitely remember the net and know they will be taken out of the water with the net even though it may be over a year since I used the net to take them out.

I have been using BCB filters since covid. They work better than commercial filters - all other You tubers are full of crap, they just want to sell sell sell. Notice how none support or talk about Plenums or BCBs? They will go out of bushiness if they promote it. I only use BCB filters and not plenums. Plenums do not work for me because I have a hill stream loach colony with continues fry so I have to continuously over feed the tank. Therefore, I have bare glass bottoms that are easy to vacuum. There is just too much waste material to expect a plenum to clean. The hill stream loachs need clean water so the BCB filter is essential to keep my fish population healthy.

We can just add water conditioner at the same time we’re adding new tap water 🤷 In the old ways, we would wait 15 minutes and stir the water conditioner and wait ☝️ But you have to know and read what the bottle says. API requires 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons. And it is different for Other conditioners

I think it would be super helpful to also see the ORP / Redox readings for both the water in the tank and the water coming out of the plenum as another point of reference for what is going on in the plenum and just to help those of us who have or are planning to establish plenum style anoxic filters. You could also take it a step further (to shut up all of the nay sayers who think the plants are doing all of the work) by removing the plants for a period of time (replacing them with plastic plants if you can't stand the look of the tank without greenery) and testing the nitrates, phosphates and ORP of both the tank water and the plenum water for a month or two to see what happens. Since you already have an established anoxic filter I would suspect that the nitrates may go up just slightly after removing the plants (since they do do a little work) and then come back down again to near zero once the anoxic bacteria colony grows to match the new nitrate load. Just a thought, but I think it would be a fantastic set of tests that would be hard to refute and would provide some valuable ORP data to help others (including myself) with dialing in our systems.
@anoxicfiltrationplenums12 күн бұрын
I think you are on to something there! However, I have for a long time Shawn redox reading of peoples tanks using a Plenum and they're always high. Because of that I did not see the need to read redox.
@scotchguard7412 күн бұрын
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums Yes, I've watched all your videos (most at 1.75x speed because there are so many and some are rather long) and I've seen where you provide the ORP / Redox measurements for the water in your tanks and many others and that having high ORP / Redox numbers in the tank water is good. However, I don't believe (unless I just missed it) that you have ever shown the ORP / Redox testing of the water directly from the plenum. To me this seems like the best measure to tune the amount of flow through the plenum in order to create the correct conditions for denitrification to occur. For the type of denitrification that we are looking for, the ORP / Redox measurement of the water in the plenum seems to need to be between 0 and +50mV based on what you've presented in your videos and from other research that I've done on waste water management systems. At +50mV there is little to no denitrification happening and at 0 mV there may be too little flow through the plenum in order to cycle enough of the tank water through the plenum to keep up with the amount of nitrates being produced. What I'm curious to know is if there is a sweet spot or range that provides the most effectiveness (perhaps +10 to +30mV?) and how narrow or wide that might be. But for starters I'd just like to know the measurements of an established working system like yours to have at least one data point. Plus it would show with real measured data that the correct conditions for denitrification to occur can be created within the plenum; as there are others in the fish keeping community and on KZbin who accept that denitrification does in fact occur in waste water systems but have this strange idea that those conditions cannot be created on a smaller scale in aquariums and thus think that the whole idea of anoxic filtration is a myth.
@apolloravindran17 күн бұрын
My thoughts must have reached you through KZbin, I am trying to get back into the hobby and have had the 125G from PetSmart for many years before I sold it. You are correct that the stand it comes with needs a perfectly level ground for it to sit on and it's not very sturdy, so I was thinking of combining 2 40B stands. Glad you are experimenting with this so would love to see the outcome, subscribed

You brought up another good point. My 5 gallon tank has a 50 watt heater that keeps the tank between 72-75 degrees but under the plenum it's always 1 degree cooler perhaps for the low flow bubbler. I just use 2" of kitty litter, and the snap together plenum set up you use. Thank You
