My mom's family had a woman in the 1700s counterfeiting colonial notes. She got some of her family involved such as her brother who was the specialist in forging the signatures. The difficulty in prosecuting them was the lack of evidence as she used steam to lift some color from the notes onto thin cloth to then print what was captured onto new stock. This process destroys the evidence unlike others...I hear.
