Don't miss this story of Ansel Adams' breakthrough when he first learned to visualize a photograph, moving from amateur to the true artistry he was known for. Then see previously unreleased footage of Ansel explaining exactly what he means by "visualization" and the points to master to be an "instinctive" photographer. All footage filmed in Yosemite National Park where Ansel lived and photographed for decades. By watching and following his advice you can advance your photography to new heights!

Ansel tells us about "visualization" of an image and using his skill to bring about what he saw in his "mind's eye" to make that final image occur.  We hear directly from his son Michael about the amazing climb he took that day and captured his first truly professional image. In fact it was this moment when Ansel made the decision to leave his career path as a concert pianist and pursue photography as a professional instead. The point I want to emphasize is that his moment of breakthrough can be yours too! Learning to visualize all the way through will add the power of your imagination (see our video "Imagine") to the process.

There's a french saying that goes like this : "C'est dans les vieux pots, que l'on fait les meilleurs confitures", thus, you make the best jam in old pots. That goes for this master of photography Ansel Adams too. He used cameras, or should I say dark boxes, with no electronics, no metering, no nothing. Instead, he used his inspiration, his craft, his knowledge and....long years of practice. This is what I call, a real artist's approach, that goes for any artist of the 7 major arts: Architecture, Sculpture, Painting/Drawing, Music, Litterature, Performing Arts and Cinema. So, before we drown into technology fluff and marketing the camera makers pour on us, let's not forget the basics, the principles old masters taught us, and that goes for me too (ohhh yes), VIZUALIZE before going any further.

Thank you so much for your insightful interview and also for showing original film of Ansel Adams talking about his craft - especially visualization. I love to watch your "classes" and interviews. You are helping me to be a better photographer!

Hi Marc, I like what Ansel said here to paraphrase...the camera sees differently than the eye...we must train the eye to see as the camera sees. Just occured to me that the Higher Self is the eye in camera and is teaching us to see thru its lens and take the picture

I like the video,I’m just puzzled why he talks about Ansel like if he was a person he once met and not like “My Father” did such and such. Just odd.

Good question. He's discussing Ansel Adams as an important figure in photography, not as his father. There's nothing odd about it. When Frank Sinatra Jr. spoke about his father's work, he'd refer to him as Sinatra, not as "my dad." Michael Adams will speak about "Dad" in informal situations, but in an interview like this, no.

It's videos like this and visiting Michael Adams in Carmel which rekindled my interest in traditional photography. I started with cyanotypes. I'm not getting ready to work with glass plate negatives. After that, I'll probably build a camera for large format work. Louis Daguerre, here I come! 🐧💙🐧

@@marcsilber Thank YOU for your incredible channel and the time you've put put into it. It shows how photography is a craft that can be learned and mastered. Also, the thumbnail for this video is great - it's like Ansel Adams is saying, "Hey! You can do this, too. C'mon - you'll have a great time! It's not a big mystery if you'll just try it." Have a great, safe week. 🐧💙🐧

In biology you learn that in actuality you don’t see with your eyes, you render the image with your brain. In a similar respect to learn to successfully photograph you must train your brain to render the final image.
