6:45 I'm totally that guy with his mirrorless cameras lmao, but I can totally get behind the points he is making. From time to time I also like picking up my old Nikon DSLR just for the nostalgia. Still, I wouldn't want to trade my mirrorless Sony cameras for anything else. I like having things like an actual preview of what the picture is going to look like, applying picture profiles so I can instantly share jpegs for those who can't for the finished raw's and the fact that I can record very good looking video with outstanding autofocus. Oh, and the a7c II with the 35mm f2.8 Zeiss lens literally fits into the pocket of my jacket.

I have an old Canon DSLR, and I just bought a mirrorless. I don't like some things about the mirrorless experience. I don't like having to cover the lens so much so that light doesn't damage the sensor and/or shutter when the camera is off. I don't like the fact that I can't keep looking through the viewfinder for hour after hour on the mirrorless without blowing through batteries. I literally never ran out of power with my DSLR, but I'm having to fill my pocket with batteries if I'm going to spend 10 hours out on a scene. I like the photos from my mirrorless camera and I like the fact that it is compact and I can travel with it. It weighs 1/3 of what my DSLR weighs. But I love the DSLR experience also. Let me add, I bought the Canon r100 for $237. And you can get a nifty 50 for it for about $200. There is a range of manual lenses, the TT artisan lenses are around $100. My point being that you can experiment with mirrorless cameras and make up your mind about them for around $500. The Canon r100 is also really small and easy to travel with, and it is my travel choice most of the time unless I'm having other people carry luggage. The r100 with a pancake lens is just a little bigger than an old-fashioned point and shoot.

So that took care of one particular caricature... what about all the other ways of photography that people engage in? Is my 'one lens' allowed to be a super-zoom so i can still shoot my environmental triptychs?

I just upgraded for video purposes and honestly, I want to cry. I’m so old school in everything i do and the transition to mirrorless has been painful. It has its advantages of course, but idk- my truck still has a cd player. 😂

The Internet is Great! But! Spend a fixed time! Dont skim every image! I used like forever My M3 and 50mm! Now ir's a tiny old compact camera with zoom lens! Long ago, I REALIZED I was not a Nat-Geo member! Less is better! Bravo!

One lens makes a lot of sense, but modern compact zooms are just so good now. A 24-70 combined with the higher iso capability of modern gear (if & when needed) makes a decent alternative - the only real sacrifice being a bit more size & weight. Being able to set the zoom to my favourite focal length & have the option to instantly go wide or tele the other 10% of the time, with no faffing, is worth it in my view.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want to see what the camera sees when the photo you end up taking isn’t a representation of what you see.

Great comments. I was a film photographer (hobbyist) at age 19-23 or so. 57 now and just took up digital. I'm finding some of my best photos were with a Fuji XM-1 with 'crappy' kit lens 15-45mm at 15mm all the time. I started using different equipment and lenses in the last year and photographer friends have noticed the change in style, sometimes not for the better. So, I see the point about settling into one camera, one lens to help establish style. Changing equipment is fine if one is whittling the machines down to the point they 1) aren't a nuisance and 2) establish your personal view of the world.

Indeed! It just feels totally different to see photos in display than on paper. Yesterday and two days ago I have again printed photos with Canon Selphy CP1300, a lovely and reasonably priced printer with good enough to print 10x15 cm (or 4x6) and then put on the walls. When I see those photos on a wall, it makes me appreciate those photos more somehow and it makes me see if I like them or not much better way than just seeing those randomly on digital form.

the more i think about it, the more i just want to get an old dslr again as my new main camera. its not about the image quality, both systems create equally awesome photos you can work professional with. dslrs are way cheaper now, the experience is more fun and more grounded and it also kind of fits my ''simple life'' mentality better. with dslrs it was so simple. you had like 2-3 brands to chose from and the lineup was also simple, entry level, midrange, a pro body and then a dedicated sports camera usually. pick what you can afford. cameras where easy to pick up, easy to understand, simple concepts and had all the features one could need to take a nice photo. nowadays with mirrorless i feel SO incredibly overwhelmed. there are like hundreds? of models to chose from, all of them seem to have some sort of drawbacks or they catering to certain niches or the lenses are huge or expensive or this or that and menus that are so deep i need to study to even get through them and so many features and ... my brain cant even keep up. its just too much.

All other things being equal ... a larger format camera will always offer better image quality than a smaller format camera. This is true whether you consider film cameras, or digital cameras. For example ... a 24 megapixel DX format camera compared to a 20 megapixel Full Frame camera. At first glance, you might believe the results would be more or less equal, which they are. But on closer examination, you'll see that a larger format camera will offer better dynamic range, and less noise. The difference in this range is NOT huge, but it's SURELY noticeable.

His original negative developing frame was actually made not for AZO, but for POP (print out paper) development. AZO was the sequella chloride paper to the POP type. I have a frame exactly like the one he had. The print exposure was generally made under the sun (you can also use UV light bulbs), and as the paper was exposed you would open one side of the back of the frame and carefully inspect the image. The frame was split, and locked the paper in place so as you opened it and inspected, you would not move the paper out of position with it's negative. When the image was modestly over-exposed you would end development by taking the frame into the darkroom, releasing the negative and then rinsing. During the rinsing process your waste water would be cloudy with excess silver--that is how silver rich the paper was. Then you would tone it (rarely in selenium, but gold chloride mixed with various PH type materials to guide the color) and then fix and archival wash. The use of a locking 1/2 frame with AZO is not at all necessary. It is much more convenient to simply place a glass plate over the AZO and negative for exposure. I see also where he was using Cesco 8x10 trays. I use the same. All made in Colombia in the 1930's. They are pig iron, with porcelain plating. The trays are great because of the metal: if your development process requires you to heat or cool the fluids in the trays, it is easily done because of the metal's conductivity. Plastic trays are harder to change and hold their temperature. Also, the bottom is not ribbed; a very big deal when using AZO paper, because it is much thinner (1/2 as thin as modern papers), and if you use AZO with a ribbed tray, your prints can easily have a permanent accordion look; the paper being molded into the shape of the ribs due to the weight of the fluids. I can see for the film his trays were brand spanking new. Unfortunately, with pyrogallic acid, amidol, and selenium (all three are referred to as staining agents--duh), the trays stain badly, and you are constantly cleaning them if you want them to stay moderately white. Really, this is extraordinary to see. Marc, I thank you greatly for this wonderful post!
