The "excitement in the driving experience" nailed it for me, iRacing I played tons and used to spend ages practicing and did not enjoy much of it at all but did enjoy the races. In RF2 I literally enjoy every lap, the feeling of the car through the wheel brings so much enjoyment in the driving experience

If you had the UI and Multiplayer setup of iRacing and the driving model, visuals and mechanics of RF2, in one game, and you'd have a mighty racing sim.

Thats not really hard to do. This game can easily compete with the most popular ones on the market. It is a matter of pushing and investing. I got this game 2 days ago and I am quite impressed by driving model. Way more fun to drive than AC. Huge potential in physics and driving. Hopefully devs will do right thing and just improve platform and multiplayer as this is biggest weakness.

Hi Dave! Thanks for this video. I tried rF2 awhile back and gave up. I just couldn't get it configured - controls, graphics, etc. With all your enthusiasm for the sim and your advice to spend an hour to get it all sorted out. So I did just that - TRUTH: took me more than an hour, but I'm slow. I got the graphics, controls, and even got SimHub dash overlay working as well. I love the game now! Thank you! Thank you!

I agreed with you Dave, I race in ACC and I used to love it but I got bored by the limited content, then I have tried Iracing but man, the price to be racing each... then i started hearing about RF2 and all my friends telling me I have to try it and since then Im addicted to the game, It doesn't have the most beautiful graphics but the experience of driving any car in game is just amazing. My only Gripe now with RF2 is the lack of track specific setups in the base content. That's one thing ACC and IRacing at least give you out of the box. Not looking for a perfect setup, just something in the ballpark. Hoping LFM can also make a good 'different' range of series to race in... there's plenty GT3 ones for ACC and IRacing, so need something different.

Hey Dave - I completely get what you are saying. I originally started with Iracing about 7-8 years ago, and it was a much different story at that time - What Iracing provided you couldnt get anywhere else. Its changing though. There is more competition, and at the end of the day, sim racers want the best experience they can get. The truth of the matter is, once you get used to playing a sim with a driving experiece as rich as Rfactor2, driving a car in Iracing just seems...2 dimensional. EVEN with the dated UI and stability issues. There are many sim racers who are perfectly fine putting up with that, as long as the driving experience itself is good. You hit the nail on the head, Iracing really just is Accellerate, Brake, Turn with nothing in between. I want to love Iracing. I love the idea it. But in recent months, I will jump into a practice session only to turn it off moments later to boot up AC, ACC or RF2. I am sure its not just you and I having these feels, and if thats the case, Iracing will be in big trouble if they dont address the issues that simracers are having on their platform. Bringing at least some of those features that you mentioned; dynanmic weather, rain, flat spots on tires/better force feedback would be a great place to start.

Well said, I think iRacing really should stop what they are doing with adding rain and just improve the issues they have, but most of all make a new engine and produce iRacing 2.0 if they want to stay current

I've heard iRacing called Guitar Hero with a wheel and pedals. The driving can feel 'formulaic', as opposed to the thrill of driving a car. Ultimately the reason so many of us love cars (combustion cars usually) is theatre and character. I think other sims provide that better than iRacing, they let you enjoy being on and over the limit. Just my 2c, what do I know. And yea, the RF2 pricing model is a bit scummy making you buy all the cars, iRacing is scummy in that you lose content you've bought if you don't pay the monthly ransom. They'll all try and screw ya some way, I do trust Reiza (AMS2) though tbf.

The RF2 Re-surgence is absolutely fantastic and great to see! The LFM platform is just amzing for it, they've done a great thing for RF2! There's been so much hard work put into the sim this year by S397 they deserve it! And you but the content once and its yours! I'd love to try iracing but its the one serious sim i've never tried because i don't agree with renting stuff i've paid to own. I would'nt mind owning the content but still having to pay a subscription for a really decent marshalled multiplayer system when i go online, but I wanna be able to play offline whenever I want without a sub. Been with RF2 since the begining, before that RF1. Its had alot of problems over the years but has always had massive potential. I really hope all of this years developments with drive up sales so they can afford to expand with more staff and push it even further! Great video!!!

One talented guy on slowest bop car can beat another guy without talent but on faster bop car. What's the problem? iRating and ELO rating is full garbage, if it separate drivers. BOP is useless in this situation, what we already can see nowadays. They can't explain people, that there is someone is faster than you even on slower car, so, they create rating system. Great chat on what was and has been my goto driver since its release yonks ago, it was just brilliant, I loved it above all the other titles although it looks a bit different now since I last booted it up. Now everybody I played with has moved on to other titles without me cos I've been out of the seat for a while now as time has been a limiting factor for me to be able to race over the last couple of years at least BUT..as I'm "off work" recovering from a small op at the min, I've been filling my time here watching NEW people "like yourself" on racing videos to see what i've been missing and it's got me buzzin !! Im itching to dust the old wheel off and get some time on track whilst my hardwear still can "for now" at least hahaha. I do like racing offline as I've never been great at setups to compete in online races at the level I know I could achieve if I could master the bloody things as even if I touch 1 or 2 things its makes it worse not better so stock setups and offline racing was great for me and I could turn up or down the level to give me a great racing experience without blowing the field away, a bit like the results in your BTCC @ Oulton Park video "which was great to watch by the way" and it's nice to see an older fella like myself turning laps in race sims instead of all the young ones all over Utube. I Like that 👍. So as soon as Im able to heal enough to get set up and race on my old Potato PC I'll be turning some laps on this game for sure !! Great video Dave, New Sub here looking forward to seeing your other videos now and "hopefully" I'll see you on track. 👍

Tried rF2 only with the free LFM races and it was totally rubbish. HUD is horrid to say the least, the menus are totally without any logic. Some demanding conditions like nurburgring with 50 cars online really takes a NASA pc to run well on low settings in VR, but VR should work halfway alright, it runs better for me than dirt rally 2 for example. The rF2 discord and forum have great advice on how to increase performance with ingame/config tweaks and using opencomposite to cut out WMR for example and do foveated rendering can also net a good fps boost. But for online racing Cpu is kind of crucial. Sadly it doesnt have stereoscopic mirrors like AC with CSP. Also it seems overlay rendering like simhub can cost a lot of performance, they really hammer the main physics thread
@bluein2red423

@@virtual_GaRy Correct, it does work halfway alright under less demanding conditions, but halfway alright is nowhere near good enough for me considering what I’ve spent on my sim hardware and software! Also, it still looks relatively poor in my opinion - shimmering edges which I really hate in VR. IRacing is much “smoother” looking in comparison.

IRacing in VR is kinda crappy looking compared to AMS2 with a 2070super. IRacing does run good in VR but I think there is some optimization with shadows and and lighting that could put it up to AMS2 standards. Having said that, performance is most important and both IRacing amd AMS2 perform well.

The website makes it soooo convenient to just sign up to a bunch of races back-to-back (to-back-to-back...) ahead of time compared to iRacing. It's doable in iRacing but far more complicated than what it needs to be imo

Glad more KZbinrs are taking a stand against the extortion operation iRacing has been running for years. Stating that you're willing to walk away from such a substantial investment into the company by not renewing says an awful lot about your feelings towards them. It really is sad that the community has propped them up for this long but change is better late than never, so glad to finally see some decent competition rising up.

When i decided to get a new sim rig a few months ago i was sure that i will be using iracing again, because it was the most competitive platform back then. But watching the evolution of iracing and rfactor2 in the last months without playing them really made me curious if rfactor2 isnt the better online sim at the moment. Looks like they would finally fix the problems that rfactor2 had for some years, and the graphics and new content looks incredibly good now. While iracing still has no rain, weird tyres, gt3‘s with endless downforce and the famous lawnmower simulation haha

Hey Dave, great video. I can absolutely relate to this. Why don’t you get a discussion going about Iracing. Do a shorts video asking people to comment with what small implementations they would like in Iracing to make it better. Then do a longer video to discuss the community’s idea’s . Iracing doesn’t need a massive overhaul, but with some small implementations it could be a lot better.

I've tried to get into it but the constant issues I have with the game losing my wheel and pedal assignments and calibration (Fanatec DD Pro and CSL pedals + loadcell) mean I've walked away from the game once more sadly. I won't be buying any DLC of course until this game works properly for me. I'll try again in about a year and see if anything has changed.

Sounds like your game has issues with closing down properly, maybe your folder is write protected? Sometimes removing the userdata folder and requesting a new one from steam can also fix the issue. Then the configurations will be saved properly

@@virtual_GaRy Cheers 👍. Yeah tried that. One key issue is that the problems are intermittent which makes troubleshooting very hard. And when everything else in my system works fine (iRacing, AMS2, Beam, PC2, AC & ACC) you run out of patience with the one game that doesn't. Hopefully there will be some more rF2 updates in the next year, so I've given up for 2022. I'll reinstall the game next year sometime and see if anything has improved. 🧑‍🔧

I've recently gotten into iRacing because my new Fanatec wheel had a free 3 month trail attached to it. Although I've been enjoying the online racing, the driving itself feels so floaty. Coming from AC and ACC, it's something I'm really struggling with and really don't enjoy. Thats just not how real cars feel. I'm really glad I found your video, because I likely won't invest anything into iRacing and rFactor2 seems like it could be right up my lane.

Great video Dave. And one thing I won’t be doing, as I prefer to put my hard earned money to things worthwhile, paying a “game” that requires subscriptions, no friggen way, especially the cost of vehicles and tracks.. that’s a hell no for me. But the other sims have me way over iracing due to as you mentioned …their lack of countless areas of interest that other sims have. I truly feel all sims should do what project cars 2 did…buy the game and sure the odd dlc for key upgrades, but it had all the tracks all the cars etc right out of the box… when I pay for something in life, I expect to open the product and use it immediately without any additional costs… so at least due to this vid and a few others from users, I know to stay away from iracing like the plague, as I want my money to go much further for me for what I buy. :). Thanks for the insights.

I agree with the way you are explaining your position. I am personally currently a GT3 guy , more as for example a modern formula one guy. And maybe not like you, I like to race offline too, just to try different content on different tracks. BUT I purchased many many simulations since Grand prix legends, and I must say that i use them all after all these years. (I will purchase Automobilista 2 on steam Black friday) Of course I own Rfactor and Rfactor 2, and they are GREAT simulations. It is a very good thing that they can be raced online at LFM (even if I really think that something should be done rapidly regarding the wild behaviors on almost all races ACC) I just really hope that Rfactor 2 at LFM will be used not to compete ACC / GT3 . Rfactor as a HUGE versatility, and it should be used in that way. Classic cars , formula one 70's, old DTM, Formula ford, ....Everything except GT3 (just some races). I just can make a dream : Le mans at LFM, 60's formula one at Spa 1966 or Watkins glen 1967 , old DTM, porsche cup, .. There is just so many fantastic mod and content to be used . If we could have a dream, I wish LFM could bring back to live online racing with Grand Prix legends. And why not Netkar pro (which is fantastic and absolutely free)

Yeah I agree. I’ve also just jumped back onto rf2 and I’m also really surprised by how much I’m enjoying it. I also have had it in my steam library for many years but couldn’t stand the ui so never really played it. The set up is still not the best but an improvement since the refresh so I was able to get the game set up in vr this time way easier than when I’d tried before. The handling and ffb for me is the gold standard within sim racing. Sim racing is not about how amazing the sim looks (but it helps),it’s about how excited you are before, during and after a race. If rf2 was made more user friendly I honestly think it would take a huge chunk of people from the other 3 or 4 big hitters. For me also it’s all about online. Racing against other humans like in real life racing. The name of our hobby is SIM RACING,I think we sometimes forget we are trying to simulate the art of racing. Defo going deeper with rf2,so I hope the devs put some time into improving the parts that I’m sure they know needs updated . 👍🏻

I can’t see my self not having iRACING because I’m to heavily invested not have it or it would be 1000s wasted. I have recently tried ACC and you have inspired me to try RF2, I just love racing online and racing in general. Like others I want the best experience I can have, they all have their shortcomings but it is nice to have options depending on the type of racing you are looking to do, each sim does one class a little better than the other. Having an absolute blast on ACC right now , not because its the best sim ever but because its new and different to me but, like all things that will wear off, if only we had a sim where we never lost that feeling or eventually weren’t left yearning for more. Ill always be an iRACER but that doesn’t mean we have to stop searching for great racing elsewhere.

Good on you, Dave! I re-engaged with simracing this year, and I dove in deep (and still am, I am currently investing a lot of money to upgrade my setup, because I love it so much). I think there is no such thing as "the best" or "the only valid" racing sim. Each one out there has it's ups and downs, strengths and lows. I for one am a ACC-guy, because although the content is narrow, it is exquisit in my opinion. I tried out iRacing, and while I understand it's value due it's longevity and I really think it is a great simulation programme, I don't like it's monetization model. I think it would be more customer-friendly, if they sold car packs instead of single cars for the same value as e.g. Kunos charges for DLC packs on ACC. And all this is on top of a monthly fee. I think that's only a bearable factor, if you just stick to iRacing... but aside that, Simracing all in all is expensive. And if I look back around 15 years ago, where I stepped away from racing games overall, because PCs where a pain in the ass in my opinion, hardware and software wise, I realized this stuff currently is at a point, where I can finally get out the experience that I always wanted. And I can afford this stuff now, back then I couldn't... and didn't want, because it was far more expensive and far more goofy, then today. Sure, a alluminum-profile-rig for around 500 bucks and the need for an additional 200-300 bucks for a seat is a lot of money... but such a rig was unthinkable 15-20 years ago, or lets say far more expensive. And the direct drive technology is just incredible, especially to me, because I am a professional Electronics Technician for Machines and Drive Technology (sounds fancy, ey 😂), so I know a thing or two about electrical motors. You know, I was always a person that is called "Gamer" these days - never liked this tag, but what can you do. But since I am older now (40 currently) I am of course more serious, more disciplined, less focussed on "entertainment", more passionate about my hobbies. And after I dropped racing games and sims more than a decade ago, I never really lost touch on that, and before that, racing was always a part of my "gaming routines". Now since most games - I'd say at least 95% of them - can't really do it for me anymore, I focus on very few ones and instead I fell in love with the most immersive sim racing experiences. Maybe VR can surpass that, I'm pretty sure Half-Life: Alyx is an awesome experience... but I tried out VR and I immediately disliked the stupid helmet thing and the feeling that I looked through diving goggles. For real, I own a triple screen setup now, and I am firmly of the opinion, that THIS is superior to VR. At least right now. I don't condemn VR, it simply doesn't do the cut for me in it's current state. So yeah, I hear you. I love your content and I love your passion for sim racing. Cheers, Dave!

I'm a rF2 racer and always focus on a single sim so what is happening in rF2 is nice to see for sure. That said, the guy who made this rF2 tire model has been working for iR for a couple years already. I'm guessing he is also part of the rain development since both things need to work together. This project should be close to release given the time he joined them. I expect next iR big update (rain and tire model) to be far superior to rF2 unless S397 decides to improve what they have, but they have many other issues to focus right now.

Honest words there Dave. I am following you a long time now and I value your words and oppinions. I got rF2 many many many years ago when still rf1 was going one well in Leagues back in the days. I really don´t remember when I got it. When it was announced I got the opportunity to get rF2 plus the Online license. Back then it wasn´t even available on Steam yet. Back in the days i´ve played it a little because I wanted Oval Racing going with my own League back then but rF1 was so active that a Stockcar Evolution Mod never made it to rF2 fully. Then I got my chance to migrate rF2 into Steam Content. Meanwhile I was an addicted iRacer since 2008 and never touched rF2 again. Now in 2022 and since @Studio 397 got Hands on rFactor2 with Marcel Offermans I always followed their progress many years. Then Low Fuel Motorsports kicked in and are now supporting rF2 as well and watching your Videos now with rF2 racing online with LfM definately considered me to get rF2 installed again. Still need the content though but am willing to pay for it. I want something new and rF2 online is the way to go for me now since as you say it got a bit stale on iRacing for me as well.

Thank you Dav for your very detailed and honest opinion as to why you currently prefer RF2 to I-Racing. I love RF2, too, and I spent the most hours playing there by far. However, I must say that I-Racing does some things a little better than RF2. I would wish for the following points in RF2: - better visual damage model. - Introduction of the meatball flag for heavy vehicle damage - Better flagrule implementation in the AI -The AI Editor from I-Racing, where you can adjust your AI opponents as you like (one of the best features in I-Racing) Since many points are limited to the single player, it should be clear to everyone that I'm not an online racer like Dav. But that's my point so far.
