Honestly I never felt much support on booktube until I found the romance community. I feel like since romance is so trashed on by other people there’s an extra sense of community and support that romance readers give each other. Everything you said is so spot on. I know negative videos are “popular” and I think having negative or critical opinions is totally valid but I don’t understand wanting to make content specifically for the intent of being negative. Even when I hated a book I always try to have a positive vibe to the videos I make loved this video 💕

This is so true! I have a FB reading group and although we don’t only read romance, that is our primary genre. The readers and the authors are so supportive of one another and of small groups like ours! Most of the authors that I reach out to are genuinely nice and are willing to give of their time to support our group! It’s been amazing! I am happy to have found both of you ladies!

As a romance reader, being subscribed to all of you makes me feel very accepted. Romance isn’t the only thing I read but it’s the biggest part of my reading, even if I read fantasy I want romance in it! I used to feel like I had to hide that I read romance because I was so tired of the comments. But all of you are the BEST, and makes me so happy that I found this part of KZbin.

One of the reasons why I love PeruseProject and Hailey is because they tried romance without trashing it. They had the intention of trying the genre and hoping to love the books. I myself am a wide reader. Read a lot of romance, thrillers, and fantasy. I love all these genres. I don't get why some people would be snobs just because they think the genre they read is superior. As readers, aren't we supposed to be wiser and more empathetic? I hope this will stop soon and that romance won't be called "trash" or "guilty pleasure" anymore. Some fantasy books even have incest when it doesn't really add anything to the plot except for scandal and shock factor. I also love what Sarah J Maas said I think in her interview with Christina Lauren. She said why is it okay to write about gory details about killing and violence but not okay to write about romance/bed scenes (or something to that effect). Is it because if you write/read about violence you are a badass or very masculine? And is it because if you read/write about romance, you are a girly girl girl? I mean, really. Why? I know men who love romance. And I can't figure out why people in a relationship hate on romance. Are they not in a happy relationship? Do they not show love to their partners? Is it wrong to hope for an HEA/happy for now? Some romances don't even end in an HEA. Sorry this became a rant but I just wanted to put it out there. Romance is a genre. ❤❤❤

Well said and totally agree about everything! That is something that has always bothered me. How is gore, killing, depictions of violence ok and sex is not, and specifically sex is NOT ok in a romance book. Is it because it's primary audience is women? Goes back to the whole culture of mocking what women like and it infuriates me. You bring up such great points.

Totally relate to those shame-feelings associated with reading romance. I finally got to a point where I was tired of talking around my love of romance. Everyone in my personal life knows I love to read since it's my only hobby, but I would avoid specifically saying "I only read romance" for the longest time! Once I decided I was over feeling that way, I took the leap and started my podcast and then my channel. It's honestly been the best decision ever. I love this community so much! Dabbled in writing over the years, but I also just love reading too much 😆

EVERYTHING YOU SAID WAS 👏🙌👌 A lot of people don’t understand the stigma of romance but it is frustrating for people who grew up with the genre and absolutely love it. I have even had people at bookstores give me the side eye whenever I saw I’m looking for romance. When I first found out booktube was a thing I was only seeing videos on fantasy novels and even though I like fantasy I wasn’t super interested. And then I found one of your reading vlogs and it changed everything 🙌 I think I binged watched all your videos in like a week I was so excited to found another romance lover 😂 And after watching your videos it was what inspired me to start my Instagram and then my KZbin. So thanks for being such a positive figure for the genre 🙌

I'm so glad you did this video. I totally feel the same way when I tell people that I read Romance. I find it difficult to find other people who enjoy reading Romance. I recently tried to see if anyone at my job reads Romance and no such luck. I think people don't respect Romance books cause of the covers. Let's be honest some of the covers can be cheesy but I'm fine with it. I think that's part of the fun of reading Romance books. Nice to feel I'm not the only one who enjoys Romance. P.S. your dog is so adorable!

This was the best video Jess, I'm a mom to middle school and high school aged boys so I'm also very thoughtful about keeping my videos pg13 because they do sometimes watch them. And I think having them watch me go after something I'm passionate about, making booktube videos about romance books, has helped them see that just do what you love, like what you like, the world is going to judge you no matter what, you may as well be reading and talking about the things YOU love. Also I loved hearing you talk about Addie LaRue because SAME i really want to read that, and I will, but it is everywhere haha.

Everything you said about time management and using books as entertainment is super relatable! Also the fact that my video literally went up while you were filming... omg. But you know, the think I like about KZbin is if people watch one video about something they will probably watch others too and have them recommended. I feel like romance is doing better and being less stigmatized, but it's certainly not as popular. Thanks for sharing!

Ugh I really relate to telling people I read romance and have to brace for their rude answer. One of the ways I avoid burnout is to read multiple genres, but I will always come back to Romance. It's been the crux of my reading for 30 years and sadly, it's always been trashed. You would think we would get better about accepting people's reading tastes, but no. I have been unfollowing several KZbinrs because of the "trash" comments, hate reading, and just general negativity. There is already enough negative energy in the world right now. Don't need more here! Thank you for putting positive energy and your enthusiasm for books into the world.

I love your channel and you were one of the first booktubers I subscribed to!

Loooved this video and everything you had to say about about reading romance. I read a wide variety of genres, but was always so embarrassed to admit to others that romance is one of them, until I started following lovely channels like yours where the you talk about the genre with so much joy. Channels like this one made me realize that not only is there nothing wrong with it, but there’s usually an inherent misogyny to the criticism that readers get for liking romance. And so I now proudly buy and stock my shelves with it and when people ask what I’m reading, if it happens to be a romance, I don’t pretend that it’s otherwise 😌

Since I can understand it's totally frustrating for you to have other Booktubers and people in general looking down on romance, I thought I'd pop in with some positivity! I found your channel through Chandler Ainsley, and you two are the reason I got back into reading romance about two years ago. It used to be 90% of what I read as a teen (like I read all of Lorraine Heath's books that she published under Rachel Hawthorne lol). But when I found Booktube, I didn't consciously move away from that, I just wasn't getting those recommendations so they weren't on my mind. Now along with all the other books I read because of Booktube, I've been reading soooo much romance. And I've been soooooo happy. I forgot how much I love this genre! Tbh, ALL of my favorite books this year have been romance. So thanks for helping me rediscover a genre I love! ❤️

Thanks for the Shoutout. Haha, Thanks for saying it made sense. I wasn't nervous to share, but I was nervous about being able to convey what I wanted to... It's hard to break everything down because KZbin is just confusing as hell. Thanks for showing us your side of everything. You are a HUGE part of what inspired me to move into sharing about romance. Because I used to hide what romances I read if they were too sexy. So I thank you for being honest and sharing what you like. But I have always wondered what things you have to censor, but being respectful of your students and their parents is very important. I think slumpiness with books is a reason I don't do vlogs or reading specific things at specific times. I read so much because I let myself go wherever I want to. But I LOVE other peoples secret TBR books. I just had someone freak out on me over a certain genre... like, I just mute those people and take their ad money. lols. Merphy taught me that and I love it. Binge books instead of Netflix.. Yeas!! I haven't watched more than an hour of TV a day in MONTHS, and usually only when I eat. Then Its back to my kindle. My family always knew I had a channel, but I was really small when I started. Now I don't talk about it all or remind them about it, since I talk about WAY steamy books than I did in the beginning. So.. yeah, awkward.

I've been reading for more than two years now, and while I do try to read different genres, romance has been my favorite among all others without any doubt. Though I haven't met anybody who's judged me for the same, I do agree that there are many who do not infact read these or consider these to be "a good read" for resons best known to them. But then, as a reader, I believe it's totally upto me to choose what I wanna read, irrespective of what others may perceive it to be.

I read a range of genres, but romance has always been my fav. I only recently started becoming more comfortable telling people i read romance even I’ve been reading the genre for half my life because of the judgement it gets. Which seems bonkers because romance is in practically every book! Its not just badly written bdsm, and even if that was what i was reading, who cares? I was talking to someone who works at a used bookstore/cafe and I said that I'm disappointed that this store does not sell romance books ( they don't sell romance at all). He said, " they don't DO romance". I said that's unfortunate because romance books are what keeps the publishing industry alive. He was surprised by that info. Im sure other people who read regularly also get passive aggressive comments from people saying things like, " I'm way too busy to read" or " I wish I had time to read". I'm not going to feel guilty for spending time reading. We all have free time and I choose to spend mine reading!

Romance makes SO MUCH MONEY in the publishing industry, so it’s even more frustrating when people in the book industry don’t value it 😭

Us Romance Booktubers are a fun community though. Even if growth is slow. You’re the trailblazer of romance Booktube in my opinion. And you deserve a lot of credit for that. ♥️🍂

Loved this video! Book snobs are the worst. There are so many genres of books because there are so many varied tastes. All reading is good and should be encouraged. Period.

I found it so funny that you said that you get comments saying you talk fast. I watch your videos on 1.5 speed 😆😂😁 Great video! I would love to watch a tag video where you talk more about yourself. You are not boring! Have a great day! :)

Hahaha I’ll watch through my edited videos one more time before posting at a higher speed and understand myself just fine 😂😂

Thank you for doing this video Jess! ☺️ Its very informative and I absolutely agree with you, me personally I can't live without romance in my books, and I'm a proud romance reader♥️ Romance genre shouldn't take just for face value. If you hate romance just don't read any, just simple as that, no one is forcing someone to read romance. And let's face it, the "trashy" word also exist in different genre not just romance. 🤦♀️

I haven't had a migraine since Dec. 1, 2018. I used to get them every Monday, the last one I had was on a Saturday.

Two years ago one of my students told me she watched my videos with her parents annnnnd ... I had some very mixed feelings. Half panic because what if I said something that got misinterpreted and half shock thinking why???? Nothing bad happened. Luckily they liked them but it made me super nervous about posting soooo I get the need to censor somethings. I’m just amazed that you are able to pull it off.

One of my friends couldn't even consider only surviving on KZbin until 100 K Subscribers. And even then, it was because their spouse lost their job and they had to turn to it. It would be very scary to count on it.

Wow. I just started watching ur channel a week ago and I love ur content. Like u said, there isn't many stuff on romance books on youtube, and ur just great. I still don't get, how u get so much time. Organisation is key, I guess. Something I'm not good at. I've got a job too (I'm a doctor), I'm also a mom to three kids. I miss reading romance books so much just watching ur channel was like how I felt after I read a good romance book. So much to talk about but no one to say it to, because loving romance books is weird. I have stopped reading for leisure since a long time so I find no one speaking about the authors I love. I loved Lavyrle Spencer. Her Morning Glory and Humming Bird are my fav. I guess they are pretty old books. I love love Outlander and I'm glad you like that too. Do u have a video where u speak about Outlander or did i miss it? I love Katherine Allred's Sweet Gum Tree. Penelope Williamson's Once in a Blue Moon, Maggie Osborne's The Wives of Bowie Stone and Silver Lining, Catharine Anderson's Annie's Song. Just some books i love, and I don't see anyone recommending them. Can some one here direct me to videos where u review these books. Just love listening to u speak (n so fast but still clear). Would love to hear what u think about these books.

I love your videos and how you credit other channels. Maybe a video that recommends other romance channels not to take away your views but to help each other grow. Plus I'm always looking for more great romance recommendation or booktubers:)

I feel like the romance genre is really underrated. For me, romance is one of the most complicated things to portray. Love itself is difficult to understand. It adds character depth as well, which just helps build the personality of characters.

Love that- I don't binge Netflix. I binge 📚. I can so relate to that. 😂 I think there are just too many closeted romance readers. With as many romance authors as there are, somebody has to be reading them or they wouldn't keep putting out those books.

I have just started a channel which is so much fun to do but the videos that do the best are definitely not the ones I enjoy filming the most. Funny how it works out that way. I’m going to keeping filming the ones I like though. I love your channel and it’s great to find a channel for romance as so many channels bash it or make out that it’s for dumb people or a guilty pleasure. (Oh and the Fifty Shades comment I totally get 🤦♀️)
