First, does that flying piece of hair out of my bun bother you as much as it bothered me while filming? SORRY 😂 Second, these are just my thoughts and you can definitely have a different opinion. I am not all all trying to point out anyone in particular, these are just things in general that I’ve noticed! I’d love to hear your thoughts about what I talk about!

I sooooo appreciate what you’ve done for romance readers on booktube. I’m happy to see other channels adding romance into the mix, but I know how much groundwork you’ve laid for us romance booktubers. I JUST started booktube in April, I’ve been watching for two years, and I’ve been reading almost exclusively romance for two years. I appreciate you, and genuinely hope that the “smaller romance channels” don’t feel jipped by ya channels branching out. 😆♥️🌿

I totally agree with everything you had to say! I also joined booktube in 2015 and it’s so crazy to see how much it has evolved since! I love reading challenge type videos they have quickly become my favorite! And same reading vlogs have only recently gotten so popular and I prefer that style of filming so much honestly 😅 but love this video! And love getting to hang out with you on read with friends live shows! ❤️

One thing that has been annoying me these past few years on Booktube is the quantity and quality mindset. I feel like recently everyone has just been caring about reading as much as possible to have a lot of books to talk about or to have a big wrap up which takes the fun away from reading. I personally prefer watching videos where people care about the books they are reading even if they are only reading a few books!!

I have engaged in several conversations recently in Facebook romance reading communities regarding book tubers, more specifically romance book tubers. Overwhelming consensus is we all love you guys, everyone likes something a little different and we appreciate the variety. Some people don't even know that book tube is a thing, it is amazing to be able to open their eyes to this world! I will say you, lacey, Lisa and Laura get mentioned a lot ;) nothing but so much love to all of you guys! Thank you for all of the great recommendations.

Totally agree with more diversity on Booktube; I would LOVE to see some more slightly older content creators; bring on people in their 30’s and 40’s who’ve got a bit of life experience, talking about & recommending books. Also, fantasy YA is wonderful BUT with a majority of booktubers doing it...it’s (personally) becoming a bit tedious watching the same books in every video. So as romance is my go-to, I find the romance channels very refreshing and genuine, also the channels with broader genre focus like contemporary & literary fiction, thrillers etc...are always good. (I would have my own channel that focuses on all of the above but my mental health dictates otherwise) So; more romance, thrillers and literary fiction!😄

Romance keeps the LIGHTS ON for the fiction world, I just keep telling myself that the genre as a whole doesn’t need validation because it’s making the money! Our little community loves it and we’ll keep pushing books and hopefully it really starts to get more respect but I laugh when people talk crap about it. Literally it’s the genre paying the bills in the fiction world!

I think all of my favorite booktubers are younger than me (I'm 43) so its great when I see people trying the genre and then falling in love with it. I don't think I will ever get in front of a camera, so I think all of you are amazing!! I don't think it matters which platform you're on, romance readers always, ALWAYS, get bashed, I get a lot of grief from strangers, friends, and family. I try to avoid the negative videos and if I see that they become a trend, I know how to unfollow lol! While the genre can certainly have its drama, I think romance lovers band together to support each other!

Subscribing to you, Riley Marie, and Chandler Ainsley was one of the best decisions I ever made! Because of you three, I've started reading a lot more romance (which was like, what I exclusively read when I was 14/15). And I am SO glad for it. Like... reading all the fantasy and stuff that is popular on other channels has been awesome, don't get me wrong. I just forgot how much I love this genre, but I'm back, thanks to you. ❤

Even though I don’t have a channel I’ve been watching since 2016 and it’s so interesting to see how much content has changed. I have become more picky with who I watch because of my frustrations with the way certain people act. But I love your videos and you are one of the main reasons I got into romance and now I’m obsessed (:

I feel like right know some of the booktube channels are the same: 1. A haul full of really famous books that they are not interested about but they are so popular that they need to read them. 2. A TBR video with some ot this books. 3. A "reading" vlog showing some books on the thumbnail but then not reading them on the video. 4. A wrap up. 5. Unboxing of the same bookish box that everyone else has done already but that are too expensive or almost imposible to get for people not in the US. And it's like a cycle... Every few months they would also do an unhaul where they get rid of those popular books they were 'soo exited' about (but not really). I love your channel btw, you have great recommendations!! I'm always trying to find more romance booktubers!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I agree when I joined booktube back in 2012 I started my channel just because I wanted to talk about books. Numbers wasn’t even a thought back then now it’s hard not to think of it since it’s always thrown in your face. I think my struggle is I read so many genres that it’s hard to find an audience, but I agree like you said that when something isn’t working try something new. I’ve been doing that. Romance bashers confuse me. It was the first genre I ever loved when I started reading.

As someone who is brand new to making BookTube videos, this was super helpful and validating. Hearing your thought process on making content and channel growth was awesome because it's so easy to get stuck on the numbers and forget that I got into this for fun. I've been a BookTube viewer for years and only recently started my channel, but I really love this community from both sides of the screen!

Totally agree 100% with what u said about ppl needing to try out the romance genre. Its such a HUGE part of fiction because no matter what anyone says, romance is everywhere. It’s almost in all, if not all, fiction.. even if it’s just a little, romance still exists. & you can’t say that about any other genre so.. 😌

Definitely agree with everything you said. I started making videos in 2013 and the content and the community was so different. I’m really glad vlogs are in right now because it gives us a chance to get to know the readers more than a sit down video and gives them a chance to be more creative with editing. And I’m glad romance is getting more credit as I’ve always loved contemporary the most. For awhile I was reading popular YA Fantasy because I felt like I had to, but now I read mostly Contemp with a little bit of everything else here and there and it’s made my reading experience a lot better!

I think your channel is amazing and I hope you enjoy doing videos as much as I enjoy watching them. I also wanted to say that what make me watch booktubers was at first to have some recommendations (I was on my phone and found it simpler than to go through goodreads' lists and through the lists on maryse book blog.. ) but what make me really invested as a watcher (I admire you for having a blog and then a channel) is seeing how other people are also enthusiastic about the things I love. Therefore, if I am thrilled to have new recommendations I also love having your thoughts on books I already read even on a recommendation video. I feel less alone with my addiction. Thank you again.

As a huge fan of romance for so long, it's tough when people don't realize that 1) there is a TON of well-written romance, and 2) there are SOOOOO many subgenres - if you don't like one, two, or five subgenres, you might still like another one, two, or five. A friend of mine recently asked me for book recommendations by women of color with women of color as main characters and most of my list was romance, and she was blown away. I wish people were more open in general when it comes to books, but definitely when it comes to romance.

Romance is literally one of the - if not the - most important genre in literature that helps in keeping bookstores and book sales going in this day and age and I will not tolerate slander against it. It's also the most feminist, female-catering and woman-empowering genre. I'm personally very hot-headed when it comes to this topic and any time that someone has directly tried to come at me for my tastes in literature, scandalous words have been exchanged. I've also never been one to shy away from stating that I love reading romance. I was probably the only 14 year old in my class who carried around a Judith McNaught or Jude Deveraux book everywhere she went. I carried those books around like they were trophies. This was just a few years ago so, it was definitely un-cool and unacceptable but I braved the pressuring storms. 😏 I totally agree with you on what you said about channels that blow up because of snarky, negative reviews. The very idea of torturing myself while reading just so that I can get views, completely flies over my head. Everyone's allowed to do negative reviews but when you know that the subject-matter in a book is something you despise then your review has no credibility! What are you even comparing it against? Reading, to me, is such a wholesome and fulfilling self-care act that it bothers me that people take that experience and use it to churn out such vain content. The titles of those videos can also be really derogatory and the comments made can sometimes easily make the readers and lovers of those books feel stupid, un-worldly or less intelligent, which kills me. What I hate the most, is when they'll show the book and then forcibly guffaw or smother their fake laugh to insinuate that an intellectual like them has lowered themself to the level of pea-brained peasants. Can you imagine if I did that next time I read a thriller or a literary fiction novel? I'd look so stupid and I'm sorry to say, but they look proper stupid to me. I hate plenty of books that other people love - Beautiful Disaster - and love plenty of books that people hate - AFTER - and I get the temptation to rant and vent about those books but when an entire genre isn't your thing then it just isn't a good look, in my humble opinion. Also, them acting as though the readers of certain books, (AFTER, Bully, Whitney, My Love) don't understand the problematic aspects of the stories, always has me fuming. A KZbinr who shall not be named practically salivates while talking about fictional serial killers but then gives very serious moral lectures on how characters from certain NA books are "trash". I despise that word. I've only ever called one book that word and I stand by it but to say "trashy romance" all the time as though it's a sub-genre is just ridiculous. P.S. I don't think there's anything wrong with this person enjoying reading about a well-crafted, fictional serial killer. That's their genre. That's their thing and it's great that it makes them happy. If anyone's actually reading this then know that I'm having to physically stop myself from typing right now. I have so many thoughts. 😂

This right here!!!! I am a really big romance fan and I also love thrillers and horrors as well. I hate whenever people shit on a book if it has even a hint of romance. Even if its well-written. I think I've been on Booktube for 4 years now (I lose track because I didn't start out making book videos on KZbin and transitioned to it after a few years, so it's all a blur!) and I started talking about books because I loved reading and I wanted an outlet to share my thoughts and find a community of like minded people. I also started out as someone who never read romance (didn't think it was for me) and I'm not 100% a convert and adore it and all the channels who talk about romance books. I also love seeing people reading diversely across readerships/genres/etc because I think we're so quick to label ourselves as one kind of reader when I think there's alway potential to explore new genres and stories.

I won't care about my subscriber amount once I join book tube. It's just enough of achievement of being able to have a book tube channel. Hopefully this December fingers crossed.

I think it gives a book much more credibility if 1) more people recommend a book, 2) people that primarily read a specific genre recommend a book from a different genre (e.g. if you as an avid romance reader recommend a fantasy with romance), 3) people that have similar reading tastes as you recommend a book.

Booktube is so different from 5 years ago, I definitely agree that it’s all about numbers now 😅

I loved how she was very personal with the opinion! Also, on a side note, same story of adulting here minus the KZbin channel, kind of. Graduation 2015, also 26 now and heavily into Booktube on the consumption side. Also, am I the only one noticing, how you turn a certain age and everyone starts to bring up that number regarding someone/themselves age/experience vise? Piera Forde is also 26 and a lot of others, but somehow they would mention it when I'm attentively watching and I would think it's because of the age gravity or something, like age attracts age sort of thing, I don't know. Anyway, enjoying the content always!

YES to the multiple ads thing. I don't mind ads in general, but it is so freaking annoying when you have a relatively short video with three, four, or more ad breaks, or an ad like literally three seconds before the video ends. Come the fuck on.

I have a question for you: what would you recommend for readers who have an eclectic taste in books? I don't have any particular genre that I prefer, which makes me feel a little intimidated to start a booktube account!
@PeaceLoveBooksxo

Neva Davies there are definitely people who read eclectically! I think that’s totally fine to have a channel that’s not for one specific genre!

Do you ever read romance books from small press or independent publishers? If so, what are the differences in those books compared to the ones put out by the big publishing companies?
@PeaceLoveBooksxo
@PeaceLoveBooksxo 4 жыл бұрын
D. D. The main difference is that they just don’t have a lot of money behind their marketing. People who publish independently are writing AND marketing, which is hard to do.

I took a lot from this video, mainly about some things I could do to try and make my videos a little more interesting. I think I'll try a my first reading vlog. Do you think it's important for a Booktuber to mainly stick to one genre? I mainly read and make romance genre videos too but I'd love to branch out a little :)

Renee C I think it’s great to branch out! Especially for yourself. I read some thrillers occasionally and love the break from romance!

On the topic of romance, I'm hoping to start reading some romance books this year (specifically M/M romance) which I am both nervous and excited for. On that note, do you have any recommendations for M/M romances? Particularly sci-fi/fantasy romances?

Everyone is raving about Wolfsong by T. J. Klune.

As a long term stan of TJ Klune ANYTHING he writes is fab, but Wolfsong (and the rest of the series) is my favorite of his. And he writes across various sub-genres of romance so I'm sure you'll find something of his to love.

There's only one negative about paranormal romance...the author never stops the series 😵. Or when they do it's like book 3000, plus some spin off series and 50 short novellas lol.
