@@johnbuscher No. Games usually take over the whole screen. In my case a crash would happen when I tried to detach a tab to a separate window in Firefox. Crazy flickering happens when my desktop locks up after it hasn't been used and I log back in. It stops when I focus a few windows. When I drop a video over VLC window the whole app freezes. Some notes and questions: 2:20 - Can you copy files from your PC to the SD Card? -> I say Yes, you just have to load up a Live session of Linux. I've tried and tested the Manjaro version that is advertised for people that want a similar experience to the Steam Deck. You don't even have to install Manjaro on your PC, just having the installation USB will boot you up into a Live environment that has a Partition manager (that can format the SD card) and a File manager. And the sweet thing is that although Windows can't really read EXT4, Manjaro CAN read NTFS and will see stuff on your hard drive so you can start copying. I think it can't WRITE to NTFS, but it can definitely READ. And that's all you need. 14:30 - Fun fact about travelling and going to Air B&B or Hotels -> They usually have a TV, and that TV has HDMI, so at least you have a screen :P (not really for editing), but to watch your favorite shows, KZbin or something else, yeah. And all you need is a dock and an HDMI cable. There are also remotes (like Unified Remote) that can link your Steam Deck and your phone, where you'll have play, pause, volume, rewind, forward, keyboard and mouse etc. So you don't even need a long HDMI cable if you want to stay in bed. Leave the Steam Deck under the TV :) My Notes and Question Regarding dual Boot on the Deck and SD Cards: - From what I've heard, having any OS on your SD card (especially Windows) is kind of a bad idea. An OS is constantly reading and writing and it may ruin your card not to mention performance drops. - Therefore, if you have the 256 or 512 GB model, you could in theory partition the internal memory (SSD) to have Windows (Even like 32-40GB would work I believe. You can always extend it later. You could go 50%-50%). I would actually love to hear your thoughts on this (and maybe a video showcasing how we dual-boot). - Which leaves us with the external storage. Now that we have a dual-boot device that relies solely on it's internal SSD, we could be doing one of two things: 1. Split your SD budget in two: Instead of getting a 1TB card, get two 512GB SDs and label them Win and Lin, having the appropriate NTFS and EXT4 formats of course. 2. (this is more interesting) Buy that 1TB card like you planned all along and SPLIT Partition it to your liking. You won't be using Windows that much? Sure! Go for 800GB EXT4 and only 200GB NTFS. By having one card, you could always move the borders (extend, shrink) afterwards, whenever it's needed, instead of physically getting stuck with 2 cards (not to mention it would be nice not to fiddle with cards and lose them. I would love to hear your thoughts on this too, because for me, what I've described at point (2) above would be the ideal situation, I'm just wandering if it works. It should do in theory, I've had USB sticks and SD cards with multiple partitions in the past. And the software should be straightforward letting you access the drive that was meant for that OS.
@ToastedSynapseGaming2 жыл бұрын
@Bolivian-Lament I see. Probably was the case, but if you just want to copy some files over, like I said, there would be no hassle. Grab your Manjaro USB, grab your microSD, restart the PC and hit F12 (or whatever key), boot into Manjaro, copy paste your stuff, restart and disconnect devices. You're good to go. A total of like 2 minutes of "work" time and however many minutes of wait time for the copying to occur in the background depending on how much you copy. I don't really think people would want to transfer stuff the other way around (from the Deck to the PC), since what's there to get? Maybe some save files or some other small files. That's easy: FAT32 USB with 2 heads (USB-A and USB-C). Stick it into the Deck, copy-paste your files in a split second and then take that to your PC. - But indeed, good to know that about Linux and NTFS in case people indeed need it. EDIT: I don't know if we're still talking "Good Accessories for the Deck" on this channel, but I would see one of those USB sticks that has 2 heads a good purchase to have. Even if you don't use it between your PC and you're deck it's good to have. Maybe use it with your phone or any other application. A good acquisition nevertheless.

@doctor Dzen Why not have a separate bin folder, like /usr/local/bin, which is used when compiling from source? (And in this scenario, why isn't compiling from source a serious conflict with native packages?) Not being referred to as pathed binary already causes problems for Flatpaks. For instance, it is not recommended you install Steam via Flatpak because external software that provides cool add-ons cannot work with it, so Flatpak via Steam is slightly crippled. I'm not necessarily an advocate of Snaps over Flatpaks, but Snaps *do* let you run pathed binaries.
@johnknight91502 жыл бұрын
@doctor Dzen In addition to that, I don't know if you've ever compiled something from source (particularly the same programme that's already installed on the system via package), but it doesn't break the system. The system simply prioritises one path over another. I can't remember if it priorities /usr or /usr/local first, but both the file system and package manager are already built for this.

This could be SSH/SCP which would allow you to use Filezilla, Rsync, or SCP to get the files, or you could set up a Samba share or something else that can be accessed over the network from the deck. Does anyone know how the ext4 filesystem on the SD cards is configured? Completely default? Noatime? Disabled or external journaling? Doubt that these factors would speed up the SD card THAT much, but I'm just curious.

The question about VR is not a hardware concern, it's a software issue. We already have a number of headsets that connect only via USB-C, and ALVR exists for wireless VR. As it is, the most popular headset, the Oculus Quest 2 (refusing to call it Meta), just lacks any implementation on Linux, and OpenHMD is not there yet for supporting it. I will be fascinated to try this with my LG 360 VR glasses though.

What do people think of the value level of the three options available on the store? With the NVME being upgradable, it seems like the cheapest option might be best but the anti-glare screen seems like it would be good to have.

How long does it take to charge on a regular USB3 port if you don't have that 40 Watt charger with you. Like, when i'm in the Car and plug it into the cigarette lighter outlet that has a USB 3 port for charging my phone and running the dash cam. Is it even charging from that while playing or is it just delaying the inevitable shut down? Same question with battery packs / what kind of battery pack would make sense for it? This will decide if i have to plug it in the moment i start playing or if i can wait until it is down to 20% and only then plug it in. (i got tops 3 hours of downtime between my tours, i'm sure the battery will hold fine on its own, but maybe i forget to charge it one day before work) Hmm, will my car still turn on after having it plugged in for 3 hours? yeah... i probably should get a battery pack instead... When you are mobile and use your Phone as a mobile WiFi hot spot, so you got internet, is there something like a low traffic option in Steam OS? So it doesn't decide to start a 20GB download in the background without asking on your 2GB per month data plan? Do you predict or see any problems with DRM when playing OFFLINE with the Deck? Like Denuvo has these Tokens where you need to start the game every 2 weeks or it will throw up an error message, nothing you ever notice on your Desktop but you may have games on the Deck that you didn't touch in a month, don't know they got DRM, take it with you and then the game tells you to log in first. (hence the WiFi hotspot question, i'm sure there can be situations where you need to log in to start a game even when mobile). I don't think Always Online or DRM are considered when it comes to the ratings for how well it runs on Steam Deck, so that is something everyone needs to pay attention to who actually wants to use it mobile without Internet. (and it is not like you just need to start Steam to get those Denuvo Tokens, you need to start the actual game with Denvuo to get that token... i think there are a lot of completely oblivious people that will suddenly notice how invasive DRM can be), especially the people that want this to play semi modern AAA games, those are almost all Denuvo infested.

Top tier 512 model hands-down best choice. Never a bad decision to get as much storage as you can. AND a hard-to-scratch screen without screen protectors. Anything less than that would a bit fat regret, to me.

Valve noted that it would be unwise to just upgrade the Steam Deck's SSD with any off the shelf M.2 SSD because of EMI interference. I have a couple questions on this, not sure if you'll have answers though: - Is there an M.2 slot in the cheapest model? - How bad is the EMI issue? Are we talking like I put in an off the shelf SSD and wifi straight if stops working? Even so, I think a lot of people wouldn't really have a huge issue with this if they play a lot of games offline...
@chaos.corner2 жыл бұрын
I suspect it's just a CYA issue. Will be interesting to see what shakes out though as people are definitely going to try it.

Will any othef FS than ext4 and a realtime compression work? Btrfs? (I use ntfs compression via compactor and some games go down as low as to 40% of Its original size... Ext4 does not have realtime compression afaik)

Simply put, Tim Sweeney is a prude who has some vested interest in undermining Linux as a gaming platform, doesn't find open-source initiatives to be a positive, and Epic has major shareholders from Tencent and the CCP. In general, just not a good company, and made worse now that they own Bandcamp.

How well does it work on external network storage? Like using SMB from Winodws to play games? Also I think this is a good way of copying games is to transfer them through network to your SD Card

I am not certain of KDE has support out of the box, but usually dolphin (the file manager) has a samba plugin for SMB support.
@shawarden2 жыл бұрын
Surely you can install samba on the deck and have a network drive?
@gardiner_bryant2 жыл бұрын
No. You can't. The Deck has an immutable Filesystem, so system level packages cannot be installed unless you want to keep installing and configuring the samba service after every system update.
@shawarden2 жыл бұрын
@@gardiner_bryant Can you do it the other way around then? Dolphin should be able to browse smb shares from windows so long as you're willing to put up with Dolphin being, well, Dolphin. Hopefully by the time my side of the planet gets access to them, someone will have hacked together an optware or termux style option for installing system packages outside of the immutable area.

What about connecting my external Steam HDD to the Steam Deck using a hub, then copying the files across to the Steam Deck? Surely Linux will see my external Windows HDD? Thanks!
@Fender1782 жыл бұрын
I had very good luck with ExFat but I only use it for certain things such as my PS4 and stuff under Windows and my Android Phone. My 8TB HDD that I just bought was formatted as exFAT for some reason but I just formatted it as NTFS for better compatibility under Linux and Windows since I wasn't sure if exFAT is even readable under Linux that isn't a PS4 (even though the PS4 is based of of Free BSD) There is 3rd party software that allows you to read and write to EXT4 formatted drives under Windows made by Paragon. Yeah I figured that the Steam Deck would use Ext4 as its file system because that is what most Linux systems use now a days. With a USB C hub you can connect a NTFS formatted drive with Steam games to copy to your SD on the Deck so you don't have to worry about the Deck wanting to format the SD card to use with it.

Thanks for answering my question. Been meaning to reserve a steam deck to support Valve/Linux but gotta admit I don’t game that much. Maybe 1-3 times a month and some of those are with my kids. Which is where splitscreen comes in. I don’t think the deck is small enough for my daughter but maybe if I dock that and make it a Switch replacement 🤷♂️. Don’t know. What I do know is I’m going to be stupid and probably just use Ansible to provision my Deck after every update ha.
