You are definitely right. It's better to focus on adjusting and adapting to a new life without losing the core values that you learned throughout life. It is really hard to stop comparing abruptly because people have innate ethnocentrism. It is natural to compare and think that what we are used to is better but it is not always the case. In my situation the hardest to lose is converting the prices when I go shopping. 😆 😆 My brain just auto-reflexes to conversion mode ($ to PHP) 😆😆 😆 up to the present time. That is what I haven't gotten rid of yet and I know I should but it helps me save a lot. 😆

I have been where you're at right now. I feel your pain Mariane but don't worry you will get used to American conversational English. Give yourself some time and don't stress about it. You just need more exposure and practice. Milton is right. Take advantage of all the talking and listening opportunities that you will get. Our love stories are different but there are some similarities. My hubby is also an American but we met here in the U.S. when I was an international post graduate student. Despite my previous exposure to the American culture before our marriage I still experienced culture shock when we started to live together as husband and wife. I believe he felt the same. It's tough to live with a person you barely knew let alone someone from an entirely different cultural background. Just be patient. Also, there will still be a lot of challenges in your relationship because of your cultural differences but as long as you two are willing to work it out eventually you both will get used to your differences. Another hurdle will come when you have kids because culture also plays a huge part in raising kids. You both will need to decide on a lot of things when it comes to kids. What is important is that you both meet halfway and you need to show your kids that you two decide in unison. When you get to meet more people of diverse cultural background try not to be super sensitive. Don't expect them to be as polite and as considerate as we are. Most people here are very straight forward. They speak their minds. At times what they say will seem offensive to us but to them it's nothing. Be frank about your feelings. Let them know how you feel and why you feel that way. Like us, they too can't read minds so be open about your feelings. They appreciate it better that way.

We got married in Hongkong,, just me, my husband , 2 friends/witnesses and the judge and his assistant....no big wedding no relatives...I was told by lots of people that our marriage is not going to last because lots of Filipinos stereotype Americans that likes to divorce left and right...but 28 years later we're still happy together and I am also one of the lucky ones to have gotten a KEEPER...Milton is a KEEPER Mariane and Milton Mariane is a KEEPER... respect each other and always be honest with what you feel and think...do not go to sleep without reconciling if you have an argument...remember...LOVE is a choice....
