And as a curse, it works really well, as it basically forces you to love someone you know will die soon. They would spend 16 years knowing their daughter was doomed to die, and honestly the merriwether's fix doesn't really fix it. She would still fall into a "death-like sleep" and be unreactive to the world.

As far as Moana making you cry, I honestly believe that the music plays a huge part. I'm sure I've read somewhere that the tones in music can seriously effect your emotional state, which is why scores and songs are so important to movies. (You'd have to look it up because I don't remember where I heard it, so I could be wrong. But personally I get effected by music in movies more than anything else, so I believe it 😊)

Beast sets her free and at that point, she still has him heavily friendzoned. but then she comes back and she falls in love with him when he sacrifices himself against Gaston to save her and she's terrified of losing him, and realizes that she actually loves him.

Actually Beauty and the Beast is more an example of Lima Syndrome (where the captor begins to sympathize with the captured), while examples of Stockholm Syndrome (where the victim sympathizes with their abuser) are Frollo and Quasimodo and Mother Gothel and Rapunzel. Both break free from their captors psychological hold while Belle doesn't respond positively to the Beast until he shows her kindness (saving her from the wolves). Before (and after when he growls at her and tries to turn his injuries around on her) Belle is defiant and outspoken against his behavior, valuing herself and her own autonomy above her captor's.

Did you even watch the last few minutes of brave the whole point of the scene is that it was not the physical bond of the tapestry but the emotional bond between the mother and daughter the spell was broken when Merida apologized for what she did took responsibilities for her actions not only turning her mother into a bear but also being less open to listen to her before she was a bear .

The first one is actually easy to answer. It's because Walt Disney had survivor's guilt over the death of his mother after he bought a house for her and it wasn't repaired the first time correctly. So, nearly every Disney movie that has a missing parent or a relative that died in the movie, like Moana's grandmother, is a small hint of Walt's survivor's guilt and as the years went by it just became a tradition. It's sad but it's true.

am I crazy or am I interpreting Brave wrong? (genuinely wondering - they also may have said this as a joke so just ignore me if so)... Like I've heard this opinion a couple of times now by other people, but it wasn't the quilt that was the issue, it was her bond with her mom? the prophecy was "fate be changed, look inside, mend the bond torn by pride".... her saying she loves her mom right as she was (dying from being crushed by the rock/turning fully into a bear?? haven't watched the film in a while), is what mended the bond torn by pride... Merida is the one who confused mending the tapestry as the actual solution...

On the "Why does Tiana call Charlotte Lottie?" question I had a flashback to 6th grade where I was in a group of friends and one of my friends was Charlotte. One time another of my friends accidentally drew the curve down to low on the "r" in her name so it looked like Chanlotte, so we called her Chan-Chan after that. The reason a lot of Disney Princesses and other characters don’t have mothers is because when Walt Disney became rich and successful, he bought his parents a house. 12:37 okay lemme address this real quick. Belle kind of has Stockholm syndrome, but not in the way everyone thinks. Cinema Therapy here on KZbin just did an AMAZING video about this, explaining the thoughts behind it. To put it shortly, people always think Stockholm Syndrome means falling in love with someone who keeps you captive. Belle doesn't do that (technically). She feels compassion, sees him as a friend, but she does NOT love him romantically when he held her as a prisoner. It was only after he freed her and she chose to come back that she saw him offering himself, not fighting Gaston that she fell in love with him. Go watch their video, it's awesome haha .kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmaXpaOloK2lptE

It's also not a real diagnosis and is widely rejected as a genuine condition by both psychiatrists and psychologists. It's not in the DSM and was made up after a botched hostage negotiation by incompetent cops. It's a normal survival strategy to empathize with a human you have to be around constantly, especially when doing so may mean the difference between life and death. Furthermore it's often used as a sexist label, predominantly against women; so there's that. Better to not spread it as if it's real - cause it isn't.
@DakotahTWilson

@@MasterCrander Agreed. Reducing survival tactics to Stockholm Syndrome undermines survivors' credibility. The initial "study" that characterized the "syndrome" was not based in science at all and was quite dismissive of the survivors' experiences. I kind of equate Stockholm Syndrome to "female hysteria" which is another outdated term that, thankfully, we know better than to use nowadays.

And maybe one can throw a nice classic "he had grown to envy and hate humans, because he could possibly never become one again, which then motivated him later on subconsciously as a bear". Yeah I thought it was part of his curse, to roam his home for years, feral, not dying of old age, waiting for the right person to put him out of his misery. I think it's funny that the Carlin brothers forgot why he was in the movie. I thought it was important to have him in the movie, seeing the consequences to action in the past that still affect the present, which Merida has to face in order to get her mom back to normal and save her kingdom from falling into war. Mor'du's story is a great way to warn Merida what will happen if they don't correct their mistakes.

Actually, regarding the questions of why Belle loves the beast and why she doesn't love Gaston. Cinema Therapy did a very interesting video on that recently. Also Johnatan Decker, who is a licensed therapist, addresses Stockholm Syndrome and what it means for this movie, which is not as simple as "Belle falls in love with her kidnapper".

Mulan (2020) has a lot of problems, but I’d honestly say that Mulan having superpowers is definitely… in the middle of that list: yes, it is a problem, but the worst it does it add to a much larger problem. That problem is how Mulan isn’t challenging the system: she apparently says “I know my place”, a line that Mulan’s father says in the original, who is disproven in that philosophy, but Mulan (2020) praises her for it. Here’s where the chi midichlorians factor in: as they’re “rare in women”, it doesn’t highlight the issue with not allowing women in the army by treating Mulan as an exception. That means that she likely had very little impact in changing the system, compared to Mulan (1996), who demonstrated how different mind sets allow for more effective combat, will have meant that women would be much more likely to be allowed in the army. EDIT: Belle does not get Stockholm Syndrome. I would explain it, but Cinema Therapy did a great job of it and you should watch that video (in fact, watch their entire channel; it’s great stuff)

Yeah, the 1996 Mulan was best because she wasn't training to be a warrior all her life. She was just a brave woman who risked everything for her father, and when she went to war, skills she hadn't used previously before came to the surface. And YES. I am tired of people saying Belle had Stockholm Syndrome too.

Also, I like the 1996 version of Mulan because of Mushu, because he brought a lot of comedy relief to what could’ve been a too serious movie, whereas the 2020 version had absolutely no comedy relief, which kinda made the movie not as enjoyable for me or my family.

9:40 Folks! Apparently J is not far off regarding Rajah, which is hilarious. :D According to Disney's 1995 print book called Tales From Agrabah, Rajah was originally a circus tiger as a cub and was found by Jasmine who thought - GET THIS - a gift from her deceased mother! And "Rajah" was the name of a star her mom told her stories about, so she named the tiger after said star. And the sultan eventually came around to letting Jasmine keep the tiger and bought it from the circus.

The answer to question 8 is: Maleficent put a curse on the spindle, and Aurora was supposed to die, yet one of the fairies put an alteration on that spell, so Aurora would just sleep, but true love's kiss would awaken her

Love your videos but 1 correction: Maleficent was (seemingly) mad for not being invited to the christening party for Aurora when the whole rest of the kingdom was (Didn’t see the backstory movie. I’m sure there is more to it) She decided to still give a ‘gift’ to Aurora hence the curse to DIE if she pricked her finger on a spinning needle. One of the 3 fairies changed it to making everyone sleep instead. Also, I think the remaining spinner wheel was either magically created, built by Maleficent (or a minion) or was left over where no one thought to look (like an attic?)

Maleficent cursed her to die, but Merryweather still hasn't given her gift and changes it to sleep. Also as I remember it in an older version of sleeping beauty I think maleficent isn't invited because they don't have enough gold plates to serve one more person.

That one spinning wheel was created by magic. In the animated version it was created by Maleficent herself, but in the live-action version it was created by the curse. Also in both movies, Maleficent wasn't mad at not being invited (mistakes do happen), she was mad that she wasn't wanted.

In the original Grimm version of the story, she wasn't invited because the royal family didn't have enough ornate cuttlery for all fairies and had to exclude one of them. Why they didn't just invite her and then apologize for the inconvience is beyond me though.

@@toschiworlds7212 because she would have been insulted either way in the original. That’s just how fairies work. They either had to invite all of them and give each of them something or not invite any of them. That’s how it works with fairies.

she was mad at the lack of respect: she's a VERY powerful fairy, yet wasn't invited to the biggest celebration in the kingdom and that was pretty much the same as spitting in her beautifully green face so she retaliated by making it all about her via cursing the baby princess to death (pretty hard to ignore THAT).

No in the original movie according to the villain series Maleficent was mad because she wasn't invited to her daughter's christening yes daughter and she only cursed her daughter by making her daughter die so that way she wouldn't have to go through the hardships in life that she went through but still she's a bad mom

You guys don't seem to understand what Stockholm Syndrome actually is. Firstly, it's a social phenomenon, NOT a clinically proven psychological disorder. Secondly, if you examine Belle's behavior throughout the movie, and compare it with the common signs of stockholm syndrome, it's very clear that she doesn't even come close to suffering from that particular affliction.

The entire concept of a fairy godmother was introduced by Perrault (French court author who wrote down many fairytales a couple centuries before the Grimm brothers) and seemed to be a combination of the classic fairy helper/divine helper with the concept of actual godparents, who are traditionally tasked with offering help and support to their god-children. His version of Cinderella (the version Disbey used to adapt his) features one (along with a pumpkin and glass styles slippers) but an older version had a fairy tree and the later grimm version had a tree with the spirit of her dead mother. In other less similar variants (like Thousandfurs or Catskin) they don't get help from anyone.

SO much fun, good answers! As for Mor'du, I believe even in the movie they hinted at him being a cursed human of royalty, I think for one, he's a savage bear, and two, he some-what remembers the curse that was laid on him and not broken, possibly taking it out on Merida because she herself incidentally laid the curse onto another human! Also my mom works with wildlife, he totally looks like he has mange disease or distemper, which can cause such behavior. Also commenting on Rapunzel's hair weight, I'm a hair stylist and took a stab before you did, I guessed between 90 and 100 lbs! Proud of that, I cut a bunch off of my friend's hair recently, she had dreadlocks and we weighed them in at 3 lbs, only the top section(her sides were and back totally shaved, undercut) and only to her shoulders. Hair weighs a surprising amount. You guys have the best fan feedback! A lot of the fun is reading the comments, many many good points made!

Technically out of the 12 official princesses at this time, 6 of them have living mothers during their movies (Aurora, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, and Moana) It's mostly the early princesses who have dead moms. If we count Raya, then the stats go from 50% with living moms to 46%, but that's still a lot with moms.

Fixing the quilt isn't what broke the curse on Merida's mom. Merida THOUGHT that was how to break it but when it didn't work she broke down, finally admitted what happened to her mother was her fault (something she'd been denying the whole movie) and apologized to her. That's what 'mended the bond' between them.
