In fairness, the movie gives a lot of credit to the comprehension of a newborn even when taken straight. Like, realistically, how would a newborn remember the symbol on her mobile enough to subconsciously include it in the negative space of her artwork nearly two decades later?

I would have to counter this by pointing out that flynn acts as narrator for the whole movie, so it would make more sense that the mobile only showed those items because Flynn fills in the gaps to the story using symbols from their adventure

I always thought that because Flynn is the narrator, he is telling this story to someone (most likely his own kids) and not only would he easily embellish some facts regarding the parts of the story he personally experienced, the parts he was not present for should be taken with a grain of salt, as he would more than likely adjust some pieces for either moral, stylistic or dramatic purposes

I like this idea. Not only do we know that time travel exists in the Tangled universe thanks to the Tangled the Series episode where Rapunzel meets teenage Flynn but it would also explain how Rapunzel remembered something from when she was an infant in the movie. Also, as this channel has said in another theory the incantation talks about reversing the clock so mb the flower has time abilities.

What if it's kind of the opposite? Maybe Rapunzel can influence the reality, at least to some degree? I think it could work especially for Pascal, for example. After being kidnapped by Mother Gothel, she eventually wanted to have a pet companion, but she didn't know anything about the world so she "brought to life" a chameleon - because that's what she remembered from when she was a baby. You know, kind of like Elsa created Olaf. I guess it could work for other elements, too. And then it doesn't contradict the tv show. Maybe Rapunzel's power is just more complex than it seems.

Very interesting idea! Yeah, the chameleons in Germany is weird. Also, the ultimate power does seem to hold sway on life, death, & time itself which are all parts of reality. There is also the spell from Tangled the series that happens to Rapunzel in the House of Yesterday's Tomorrow where she gets trapped in her own head and has to fight to get out of the reality Zhantiri's minion created for her so mb the sundrop helped her escape and can help her get a desired reality?

How did I never notice all of those things on the mobile?! The only way it makes sense is for it to be a dream… and yet… I just can’t buy that a baby would be able to dream it. The language alone is far beyond a baby’s comprehension. Counter-theory: TIME TRAVEL. Rapunzel went back in time to plant all of that imagery on her baby-self’s mobile, which plants them in her subconscious, which eventually helps her remember her true identity. She’s her own grandfather paradox!

I honestly love this theory but I have to admit there are some flaws to it. 1. I don't think a baby knows what love is, or would have that much knowledge in general to dream up something like that. 2. She appears in Frozen. 3. Anyone you see in a dream you've had to of seen in real life, and where would she of seen all of these weird people? (Especially the ones in the Snuggly Duckling?) Besides this I actually LOVE this theory!

Thinking... things like the bar, the fights with palace guards, and a secluded tower to hide from the law are tainted memories Gothel had, which were traded to the flower for immortality. Then implanted on Rapunzel when she was in the womb.

I've heard a theory that Rapunzel's hair healed her mental/ emotional well being which is why she seems unaffected by Gothel's gaslighting. My take on her hair is it's a metaphor for a mask people going through abuse of any kind put on to hide their true feelings

Assuming the theory is true I would say perhaps the parents told rapunzel another story about going to a witch to get a magic herb (medicine) that made mum better so she could be born. Unfortunately this mixed with all the other fairy tales she was being told (if they read Flynn Ryder's book to her I assume they've read or told other stories) so her brain took this person she didn't know and twisted her into the evil witch archetype that such stories have. So poor mother gothel was innocent all along.😢

This would also explain one of my biggest qualms with the movie, which is that a major plot point is an eighteen-year-old girl recalling memories from when she was literally a newborn. Childhood amnesia kicks in around the age of three at the earliest, it is completely ridiculous to suggest that a teenager would be able to recall being a few days old if not literally fresh out of the womb.

wait has anyone read Mother Knows Best? Rapunzel’s life with Gothel IS a dream until the day before rapunzel’s 18th. Gothel forced an old woman to be her caretaker, there’s an entire backstory to the rapunzel flower. It’s the last of its kind, not just some randomly strong flower.

What if it's not Rapunzel's dream but Queen Ariana's fever dream from when she is sick? The movie adventure might represent her fears of losing her baby & her hope that even if she can't be with her, Rapunzel will find love, happiness, & adventure. Rapunzel's princess name would not very likely be Rapunzel but what if the Queen read the traditional Rapunzel story & is using the narrative to cope with the possibility of miscarriage. Rapunzel's mom likely decorated Rapunzel's nursery & likely knows the specific details well. She is much more likely to have heard the more adult story of Flynn Ryder than Rapunzel (how many parents read anything more complicated than a nursery rhymes to a baby) & what if the King read the story to Ariana while she was sick? Maybe the character Flynn Ryder was one of Ariana's first imaginary crushes (which would explain the romantic interest better)? This would also explain the presence of more mature content like the bar, marriage, the fear of a destroyed kingdom (more emphasized by the series) & the potential problems of childbirth. Also, we know that Ariana knows Quirin so mb she also knew Mother Gothel? Furthermore, it's interesting to consider that Rapunzel clearly looks more like her mom than her dad, which might be a feature of the kind of kid Ariana wants. There is even a scene in Tangled the Series where Ariana and her husband don't remember being in love and they list the admirable qualities they see in each other in Rapunzel. It would also explain the details present in the intro about the kingdom's origin and rulers that would be a bit complicated for a baby to understand. The flower could still be influencing Ariana's thoughts, but we know it heals Rapunzel not her, which might be a conscious choice on Ariana's part (to protect her kid) or on the flower's part (to keep itself alive longer with a younger host).

Not one of the better theories IMO. I mean, the mobile thing is interesting, but it is suggesting that a baby is dreaming of romance too, which is a dubious proposition. As far as TV show canon goes. When it comes to Disney especially, it's usually best to discount it. Historically, their TV show spin-offs have no relevance on the movies and they often contradict one-another (chronology doesn't match up, like characters interacting before they met in the film, and characters not existing in either the film or show even though they definitely should if they were both canon, etc.).
