Beginner painters always want to know the brush, paper and paint. Your advice here is spot-on. Buy the best paints as a beginner because you really don't want to fight with the paint as you are learning (Windsor & Newton tends to be the cheapest of the best brands). If cost is an issue, limit your colors. Beginners start with tone (one color) then progress to a Zorn palette and add in more colors as you think you need. Brushes rule of thumb: The stiffer the paint the stiffer your brush. Remember, beginners, your tools wont make you a better artist, but the better your tools the less you will fight with the painting. Thanks for this video, I hope it helps folks tackle gouache!

idk, I think really cheap art supplies have their merit too - especially especially beginning with a new medium, since it’s completely less pressure than using more expensive materials and there’s more room to grow with zero fear of not liking the medium or feeling like it’s just not your thing after spending some $$ on a few really expensive tubes. I think people are more likely to fight with the tools (namely brushes/definitely paper) that their using rather than the paint itself - super chalky paint can be a pain but it’s no where as mind numbing than paper that can’t hold any sort of moisture.
@miyagi_draws2 жыл бұрын
@@iris1584 Beginning with a new media is always hard and its tempting to buy cheap paints to just get a feel for them without spending lots of cash. Problem is those cheap paints arent giving you a feel for the medium at all. Most have weak artificial pigments and cheap binders. My suggestion if you want to get a feel for a new medium without going broke is to buy a good brand alizarin crimson and a bright yellow that is the cheapest and practice with those. Practice how they mix together. If you like it those colors are an artist staple so youre ahead of the game! Save money on brushes.
@iris15842 жыл бұрын
@@miyagi_draws I think the main concern is spending money on qualities of paint that beginners won’t need, the main difference and reason between student/professional grade price points are their archival quality + lightfastness, a beginner won’t necessarily need considering they more than likely aren’t selling their originals, and are working in sketchbooks/doing tests and experiments - where it doesn’t need to have all these properties in order to get a very basic feel for it.

I hear you and agree with you, but as someone that easily get scared of wasting good products I like that I started with Arteza so I can be completely fearless like a child and be as wasteful as necessary while "learning to walk". I like the result enough to not get discouraged and it also makes me excited to get good enough to feel the high quality real deal later! The reason why I know you are right because with colored pencil it would feel like a crime almost to compare crayola quality to luminance, polychromos, prismacolor etc but if crayola can work as a babystep towards falling in love with art and the medium then that has it's place in the world too. :)
@jomalenepenaflor13812 жыл бұрын
I highly appreciate the discussion that transpired here, albeit it may or may not have ended in an "agree to disagree" note. I'm someone who has been wanting to try gouache for years now, but still haven't for fear of spending on the wrong tools i.e. gouache itself. I think you're right for saying that it'll be worth it if a cheaper medium can work as a baby step towards falling in love with said medium. Altho I'm still pegged between getting the holbein 12-tube set or the himi 18-cup set as my intro to gouache.

Thanks for these tips. I've been doing paper tests and felt it was 'weird' in an oddly an ideal way for working thick and for re-working when I tried my Fabriano hot press 25% cotton with thick gouache. It was weird because on one hand the paper was very smooth on the other it felt like it 'held' the paint too much and that some paint looked worse/streakier! So I'm not crazy! I find gouache has become my favourite tied with Digital art and as an additional bonus I love the cheapest Himi/Miya a ton! I find them fantastic personally! I really advise mixing them up and mixing in Isopropyl Alcohol to prevent mold, and get the binder mixed thoroughly in they will be more smooth proper and opaque when mixed vs if just opened and used without stirring them up a bit!. I love creamy consistency on even super thin toned paper and thin paper kraft, tan or grey papers (etc). I am less bothered by some warping then most people seem to be. My paper tests continue. I feel cotton paper is best for watercolour and when using gouache in a watercolour style. Honestly this will save people money and make proper use of the cellulose and mixed media paper that isn't Ideal for watercolours! I also advise keeping 'failed' watercolours and trying to save them by painting over with gouache as you may be able to do that! Fun video thanks.

First of all, you made a beautiful job painting 🥰 I'm brazilian and i notice that you guys really afirm that gouache is opaque watercolors than i got confused, just like you said they are really different to work with, cause we're i live, we are introduced to gouache very soon in kindergarten, and told that it's water soluble, but in a way to wash yourself after using it, we paint with it fresh from the tube, so we know gouache but we don't think of it as an art material because of that introduction, which makes me sad, gouache is so fun to work with, maybe just like in brasil that thinking of gouache is a cultural thing, we also compare it with acrylics too, they are more similar

I am here cause I'm planning to try out gouache, been painting using watercolor for a couple of years already but I still have a hard time with it that the outcome of my art is not what I expected it to be and I hope gouache could be the answer and fit my art better than watercolor. The rule, lightest color first in watercolor is making my life hell cause I always want to start mine with the darkest and then make my way to the details but yeah. I guess watercolor is not just for me
