In the beginning when you are petting Dorothy I love how she rests her heavy head on the raised bed, so cute. This was a great video, I love when you give us a break from life. Also keep in mind the elderly a lot of the time have overgrown gardens they can't tend to anymore, so maybe drop them a note or a call to see if you can clean it up for a plant or two as payment. Just remind them to keep a safe distance as they sometimes can also be lonely. Have a wonderful, safe day.......Mary

I cultivate garden patience by researching the items - lots and lots of looking at pictures and gardens. Sometimes I need to add up my spending to help put my urge to shop more in check with the financial reality and garden necessity of waiting.

Great video, lots of good information. I love Dorothy, she is so sweet. Got snow last night (Northern IL) so my clean up is on hold temporarily. My local garden center is doing exactly what you said, you can order and pay ahead and drive by and they will load in your car. Loved that you addressed gardening anxieties head on. I’m having some of my own as I am in the middle of totally revamping everything and was so looking forward to it. The juxtaposition between thankfulness for what we have and disappointments is what’s so difficult. I have had to be so patient for so long in so many areas of my life that when it comes to little things like gardening I have none, but learning to accept that I don’t have any control over that or anything else for that matter...that’s the real struggle.

last year, as a joke, I planted a large clay pot with "weeds". I used ground ivy as a spiller, I can't remember what was thriller but catmint was the filler. It took OFF. I set it to the back of my yard where I could see it from my dishwashing window. actually looked pretty good from a distance, never got watered or fed. if more weeds came up in it, I didn't care or even notice. easiest pot in the yard.

I enjoy your videos and your fur babies are so sweet following you around in the garden. We are transplants from New England to Georgia where temps reach 110 degrees for months and the humidity is off the charts. It's a real challenge planting here, but I enjoy it. So happy to see another video from you! I love your down to earth approach to the entire process - gardening and filming alike, and I adore your dogs. Your style is so relaxed and laid-back and it's clear you're not stressing over angles and light and everything being picture-postcard perfect. As to how to tackle Spring gardening in the midst of a pandemic, I like your suggestion of taking stock of what we have and dividing things. Hostas and daylilies in particular would benefit from this. If you have a smallish tree or shrub that just feels like it's in the wrong place, now's a great time to move it! I just transplanted a dogwood and 3 mystery shrubs to areas that will make them much happier. Leaving me with 4 big holes that I can now obsess about...hydrangea??? Which one!!? Viburnum? Daphne?? So much fun. It's also a great idea to do some trading with friends and neighbors; our neighborhood has been doing this for weeks via the NextDoor app. We're approaching a neighbor we might not even know but whose garden we admire, and it's really taken off. New friendships are developing among garden lovers in a completely unexpected (and so welcome!) way---last week someone traded a Strawberry Vanilla hydrangea for a Bobo.! I've been doing quite a bit of online shopping, with varying results. I had fabulous experiences with The Antique Rose Emporium, High Country Roses, Nature Hills, Wayside Gardens, and Eden Brothers. I did have a couple of unpleasant experiences but am chalking that up to the fact that these are sad, strange times we're living in, and companies are having to adjust their practices drastically just as we are. I have to say it's so much fun to break into a big cardboard box full to bursting with bulbs and tubers and supplies and bare-root plants - it's like Christmas in May!

The question from fitz and fanny about early shade and late hot sun. . . I have good luck with cannas in containers in that very situation. Can I suggest for the person who wanted 4ft of privacy on the north side of their home, a free standing trellis with what ever fits the theme of their yard. I love place editables on mine, sweet peas, cucumbers, small melons. I also love holly hocks if you want a flower and the reseed themselves.

This is good to know! May I ask what part or zone you're from in Michigan? I'm in central Michigan, usually considered zone 5, but I'm actually zone 4 (gets down to -22°F). Do you keep them away from the house a ways, or pretty close, as in, how much shade are they in?

For the person she mentioned that was looking for a 4x6 screening plant for shade---Sunshine Ligustrum grows about this size. I have a dozen of them in very deep shade. They do not get the bright yellow color that they get in full sun, but they are a very pretty chartreuse color and not stretched or thin at all. They grow pretty fast. Florida Sunshine Illicium would also do the trick. These wouldn't give you flowers, but they do give you some nice bright color in a shady spot.

This might be a suggestion for an episode. I have some perennials, especially daisy-type, that have grown out in a big ring. I don't know why. Also wonder if I should divide the plants. Could I take a piece from the outside of the ring and put it in the bare middle?
@seanaames6855
@seanaames6855 4 жыл бұрын
Melissa Hofer When plants, like iris, daisies and other perennials, look like that, it's a sign they need to be divided. Just dig out chunks of the plant and transplant to a new area. Keep them wet/damp for a while after transplanting. There are videos on KZbin that show specifically how to divide iris. You'll want to refer to those.

I try to plant my annuals while the Tulip and Daffodils still have some dying stems left in the ground so I can plant between them and I don't disturb them. Have also placed a small rock on the ground when I finally pull the last of the stems out in summer to mark the spot to avoid digging into them. They are about 6 inches deep so when planting annuals usually I'm not digging that deep to plant them as I buy the cheaper 6pk and a very shallow hole is needed.

I loved watching this relaxing gardening video, even though you looked like you were freezing! Erin, when you edited this video, did you see the small herd of deer cross the clearing (23:23 timestamp) between you and the house across the road? Do you protect your hydrangeas from the drying winter winds? Mine dies back to the ground every year, and therefore it doesn't get many blooms. Any ideas, anyone? The cultivar I have is called Bloomstruck, they were planted 2 years ago.
@greenthumbelina7331

I think I may have found the answer to my own question. I believe Bloomstruck may be a macrophylla type of hydrangea that blooms on old wood. Is this correct? If so, is it possible to mulch them for protection, so I get blooms, or should I dig them out and start fresh?

How about box leaf hollies to replace the 'cat pee' (!) boxwoods? Does your dog pee on the dead boxwoods, or is he finished with them after they die? I enjoy boxwood fragrance, but plant them only outside my fence after reading they are toxic for pets, and my 2 small dogs will chew a lot of things. Inside the fence I use Autumn ferns like many people use small boxwoods. They are evergreen for me, nice and robust.

I know how u feel. I had to move away after living at my previous home 18 years and I had 12 huge beds there that I had been tending all those years. Here there is nothing and I miss my gardens so bad. My heart aches. I am 66 yrs. old and feel I will never see beautiful gardens in my lifetime. I enjoy u so much because U seem so much like me. I want every flower, every plant and I want what I had.

Hello and Happy Spring. I am new to your channel and I enjoy it a lot. I have a question about Hydrangeas. Is it best to buy them in the spring with No blooms or in June or July with full blooms?

I have a question....I'm revamping two flowerbeds. They have a ton of grass in them. I have my rototiller and I have my compost and bark. Do I mix the 2 inches in when I rototill or do I lay in on the top underneath the bark to help suffocate the grass?
